The question facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which it's based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Cloud's former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plague, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogue and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars great movie worthy of final fantasy 7 name   February 28, 2010

There are no words that convey how much I enjoy this movie, I watch it on a regular basis, I have both the collectors edition and the blu-ray edition. The added scenes in the blu-ray version really add more depth to the movie. What i really enjoy about this movie is the loyalty to the game, every person that was associated with the game came back and helped make the movie. The voice acting was great, the movie could have been dubbed a little better, you can definitely tell that is was meant for japanese only. action was good, story was great, its more of a movie for fans though, people looking for a sci fi action movie will probably be lost with all the flashbacks and visions. but its definitely worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail of Blu-ray Films   February 21, 2010

The original Advent Children was a breakthrough in CGI and motion-capture technology, beautifully rendered and impressive in its scope. Now, with the film "Complete", with a half-hour of brand-new scenes that all easily avoid the original's "uncanny valley" effect.

Fans of the original Final Fantasy VII game will find "Advent Children Complete" the perfect addition to the ever-growing "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII" library. Those who aren't fans may find the first half-hour a bit boring before the action picks up and the story moves quickly. Still, the film is a worthy addition to any Blu-ray fan's library. It has also come to be known by me as the "Holy Grail of Blu-rays", for one distinct reason: this is my original motivation for picking up a PlayStation 3, and it made it all worth it.

What else can I say? Buy it, watch it over and over, fan or not. It is worth any price you pay.

5 out of 5 stars Advent Children Two-Disc Special Edition and How Happy It Makes Me   February 18, 2010
    Lemon Smackilus (Manchester, MI USA)
Without a doubt, the modern pinnacle of CG animation (and not that cutesy Pixar foolishness) fantasy/swordplay fiction, and mindblowing direction by Tetsuya Nomura, not to mention one of the greatest soundtracks of all films by Nobuo Uematsu. The second disc was pleasing, but could've had some more features. One of my personal favorite films. Beautiful rendering, scenery, effects, and characters. The characters in particular have recieved make-overs from the game versions, and the new looks are well done and easy to accept. Good story, excellant cinematic scenes, with a climactic end-battle that will have you bowing to the magic picture box in your living room. Top notch.

5 out of 5 stars Best movie ever   February 16, 2010
    yeah yeah kool
I must say this movie is by far my all time favorite movie. I have literally watched it 40 or more times and it still hasn't gotten old. I first bought this movie in UMD format for my PSP (original). But finally I decided to buy the dvd format because I have pretty much always wanted to see it on a bigger screen. I would buy the blue-ray version (Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete, I think), however I'm in no mood to pay a bit extra even though my PS3 (original) would play it very nicely. Plus its not really worth the extra money just to get better quality when the movie is great in any format. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves fantasy and role play games. Even if you have not played a single Final Fantasy game in your life, the movie is amazing.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful   February 11, 2010

I love Final Fantasy and so it happens that FFVII is my favorite series. Cloud leaves his friends for an unknown reason, but it later explains why he left. Cloud thought that he would never fight again until 3 brothers appear and force Cloud to fight in order to protect the children, including Denzel, and his friends. Its such a touching story and has its funny moments as well. I recommend this movie for any FF fan or even for those who havn't seen FF.
