Delivering exactly what its title promises, this celebration of stupidity was Jim Carrey's 1994 follow-up to Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. The film pairs the rubber- faced wacky man with Jeff Daniels as the not-so-dynamic duo of Lloyd and Harry, dunderheads who come into the possession of a briefcase containing ransom money that is intended for Mob-connected kidnappers. Lauren Holly costars as the woman who lost the briefcase, and with whom Carrey falls in love (both in real life and as his moronic on-screen character). As Lloyd and Harry make a mad dash to return the briefcase (never aware of its contents), the bumbling buddies attract Mobsters, cops, and trouble galore. This lowbrow laugh-a-thon scores some solid hits for hilarity, but with gags involving ill-fated parakeets, buxom bimbos, and an overdose of laxatives, be prepared to put your brain--and good taste--on hold. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars GET REAL PEOPLE!   April 24, 2009

I've watched MANY movies in my life and this one has got to be one of the worst. It literately made me sick to my stomach. I am taken back by all of the positive reviews it received.

5 out of 5 stars When Jim Carrey Was The King Of Comedy   March 19, 2009

To be honest, I don't exactly know how to review a film like "Dumb and Dumber", but suffice it to say that the entire film rests on the shoulders of one man: Jim Carrey.

Though so many crazy things happen over the course of this movie, the basic plot has two friends, Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Carrey), driving across the country to return a "lost" briefcase to a woman they met at an airport. While on first viewing you will appreciate the wild and wacky antics that Harry and Lloyd get themselves into (and everyone has their favorites, such as the bathroom scene, Seabass, or Big Gulps), upon multiple viewings you will realize that the true genius of the film is in the subtleties of Jim Carrey's magnificent acting.

Though Daniels provides a great "straight man" that the film sorely needed, Carrey really steals the show with his physical comedy and facial expressions. In nearly EVERY SCENE, one could laugh themselves silly just watching the facial expressions (the whiz in the bottle scene) and body motions ("I'll hang by the bar...and put out the vibe!") of Carrey. Basically, Carrey took the intense, prat-falling stage show he was know for around the comedy circuits, toned it down a bit, and created the most hilarious character ever depicted on film.

Of course, what really makes "Dumb and Dumber" stand the test of time is the "watchability" factor. There are few movies that will make me drop pretty much anything I am doing and watch them, but this film is EXACTLY that. It could be on every night of the week (and darn near sometimes is on TBS!) and I would still laugh just as hard at the same old jokes and scenarios!

Suffice it to say that after viewing this hilarious film, you "will like it ahh-lott". If not, you're pretty much just "one pathetic loser...no offense".

4 out of 5 stars Played Strictly For Laughs   February 9, 2009

It's hard to believe this was out over a decade ago, but it was another in a long line (past few decades) of crude comedies....BUT one of the better ones regarding some laugh-out-loud funny scenes.

The "classic" of the funny scenes, at least to most men including me, is poor Jeff Daniels on the toilet. No need to go into details! As crazy as Jim Carrey got in some of his earlier movies (Ace Ventura, Liar, Liar, etc) he's actually lower-key than in some of the other stupid-guy roles he played, one reason because he's doesn't shout in here. I didn't find the female lead in here, Lauren Holley, to be appealing but that's just my opinion.

In modern-day slapstick, it means one basic thing: gross out your audience, so that's what is attempted here. When it works, it's very funny, such as that bathroom scene. One thing for sure: the language makes this a lot closer to an R-rated film, not PG-13.

Anyway, you should get a lot of laughs out this: at least I suspect males will more than females....and that's all it was meant for - laughs, and nothing else - so don't trash the film because it wasn't "intelligent" enough for you.

1 out of 5 stars Love this movie, but hate the unrated cut   January 31, 2009

The 1 star is purely for the Bluray, unrated version. I am a huge fan of the theatrical cut and it was one of the first movies I upgraded from VHS to DVD. Dumb and Dumber has near flawless pacing in it's theatrical form. The unrated version throws in bits that are completely unnecessary, extremely crude, and not very funny. It is easy to see why they were cut and a little hard to understand why the Bluray version is only offered in this version. I sent the Bluray version back and I hope the the next format upgrade of this film goes back to the classic theatrical cut.

    *Spoiler Alert*
For those of you who would like to know, here are the differences (info copied from wikipedia):
    * In the PG-13 version, when Mental tears Petey's (Harry's parakeet) head off, it cuts after he says "I Tawt I Taw a Putty Tat!". In the unrated version, it shows him violently squeezing Petey's head with his fists.
    * In the PG-13 version, Seabass is about to spit on Harry's burger, but the camera cuts to Lloyd, while the spitting sound is still heard. In the unrated version, it shows the spit coming out of his mouth onto the burger.
    * In the unrated version, when Joe Mental and Shay (the female accomplice) are waiting by the side of the road for Harry and Lloyd to drive by, Shay says to Joe: "turn around, I gotta squeeze a lemon" and crouches down.
    * In the unrated version, when Seabass finds Lloyd in the bathroom, Lloyd keeps repeating 'find a happy place' to which Seabass replies, 'I'll show you a happy place!' before dropping his own pants and grabbing his crotch.
    * After the gas station scene a new scene occurs while driving where Harry makes fun of Lloyd about being in a bathroom with a 6 foot four man with his pants down.
    * In the original PG-13 version, "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" by Crash Test Dummies plays during the scene where Harry, Lloyd, and Mental are in the restaurant. This song is absent in the unrated version, possibly due to copyright issues.
    * The unrated version of the film features an extended dialogue scene between Lloyd and Harry in the honeymoon motel.
    * The unrated version of the film features an extra scene prior to Harry's departure to the slopes with Mary, in which Lloyd comments on Harry's "revealing" ski suit.
    * In the PG-13 version, when Harry is attempting to fix Mary's toilet, he shouts out that he's shaving, and we see Mary standing at the door. The unrated version shows Harry lifting the toilet to the window and dumping its contents out.

5 out of 5 stars Dumb and Dumber is GREAT in Blu-Ray   January 24, 2009

If it is possible, this movie is even more entertaining with the clearer picture of Blu-Ray! The tuxedo scene is a classic on this DVD!
