Amazon.com Created by Frank Lupo (The A-Team), Hunter was one of producer Stephen J. Cannell's more tough-minded cop shows. Credit the character of LAPD Det. Sgt. Rick Hunter (former NFL player Fred Dryer). Supplying the yin to Hunter's yang was partner Sgt. Dee Dee McCall (Stepfanie Kramer). "Sometimes a soft approach can work," she explains in the season premiere ("Overnight Sensation"). Unfortunately, Capt. Devane (Charles Hallahan) pulls the plug on their partnership in the following episode ("Change Partners and Dance"). "You and Hunter have gotten too close," he tells a disappointed McCall. To add insult to injury, Hunter takes the separation in stride. She thought they were friends. As it turns out, Hunter feels the same way and there's more to the breakup than meets the eye. Other third season developments revolve around romance. Granted, Ray Wise (Twin Peaks) may be a murder suspect, but the culinary-challenged McCall can't resist a man who knows his way around a kitchen ("Crime of Passion"). A few episodes later, Hunter falls for a fellow detective with a few dirty secrets ("From San Francisco with Love"). Fortunately, there will be happier times ahead (that Hunter does get around). Filling out the quartet is Arnold "Sporty" James (original SNL cast member Garrett Morris), their snappily dressed informant, who provides a welcome jolt of eccentricity. In "Love, Hate, and Sporty James," he takes a rare lead, demonstrating some decent dramatic chops. Twenty-two episodes were produced for Hunter's third year, including the two-part finale ("Hot Pursuit"). Notable guests include Chaka Khan ("The Cradle Will Rock"), Star Trek: The Next Generation regulars Brent Spiner ("The Contract") and Marina Sirtis ("Down and Under"), and future TV superstars Anthony LaPaglia (the Australian-set "Down and Under") and a pompadour-sporting George Clooney ("Double Exposure"). To quote Hunter, "Works for me!" --Kathleen C. Fennessy

$7.99 at Best Buy....and picture is improved, Works for me ! January 19, 2010 Richardson (Sunny California USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Hi folks,
I just picked this up for 7.99 at Best Buy on its release day. A buddy brought over his Anchor Bay set...for a comparison. The Anchor Bay has an interview with Stephanie Kramer and Stephen J Cannell as a bonus. The packaging on this is strange...four DVDs in sleeves, in a pocket inside the plastic case? Odd..but it works...and at first glance the prints actually look better? They should not considering they are on fewer DVDs but on the set we are watching they appear to be a bit crisper, certainly brighter and less "muddy". technology HAS improved in the last few years so that might be part of it...there were many glitches in the early sets by Anchor Bay which was why I opted out of buying them at the time.
Anyway..seems like the same "temp" score which is too bad only on a few episodes in my mind.
I loved this show in my younger days and to have the first season on DVD for under ten bucks...how can that be less than 5 stars?
I should add that the first episode post pilot is "Hard Contract" they have it titled "Hard Contact"...You have to love the attention to detail these days!
WHY is Season One being re-released?????? January 15, 2010 Gary Wilcox 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I truly loved Hunter and I've already purchased all three Seasons of Hunter that have already been released through Lorimar Productions, and I'd truly love to see the remaining seasons released in the near future. However, my question is - WHY would they ever re-release Hunter over again, only this time through Mill Creek Productions? I don't get it, other than the fact that this DVD series is $4.00 cheaper than the Lorimar release. But WHY would two different studios ever release the exact same Season One of Hunter? Will the quality be any better? Will there be more extras added? And my biggest question and concern surely is: Will either studio now release ALL 7 Seasons, or will this be it? I've just never seen this ever happen previously with any other TV series. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait and see what other reviewers think of this version of Hunter before I buy this one, and I'll just keep hoping and keeping my fingers crossed for the remaining Seasons of Hunter to be released some day in the near future.
HUNTER ROCKS! November 17, 2009 Taheen Lopez (United States- San Diego, CA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I used to watch this police drama about this Dirty-Harry style maverick homicide detective(Fred Dryer)from the LAPD who partnered up with a foxy lady detective(Stephanie Kramer) who were constantly butting heads with their superior officer Capt. Dolan(John Amos)who played the father on GOOD TIMES and their clutzy fellow officer Sgt. Bernie Terwilliger(James Whitmore, Jr.), but the one thing I don't understand is why are they re-releasing this 1984-85 Season of HUNTER out on DVD?
So I'm wondering if the purpose for making another HUNTER-Season 1 DVD may perhaps be due to wanting to compensate for all the flaws and discrepancies Anchor Bay made on its the first 3 DVD box set seasons of HUNTER since the they took out the original songs that were in each episode on NBC and since Anchor Bay didn't provide Closed Captioning in DVD mode.
However, I like most other HUNTER fans am still waiting for HUNTER's 4th Season on up to be released on DVD, especially since nobdy has released another season of HUNTER out on DVD since the Summer of 2006 when Hunter's 3rd Season was released out on DVD, but I'm hoping this HUNTER-SEASON ONE DVD is a lot better than the one Anchor Bay released back in January of 2005.
Anyway, it was also interesting seeing a lot of guest stars on this show like
-Dennis Franz in "The Snow Queen" episode before his co-starring days as the hard nosed Detective Andy Sipowitz on NYPD BLUE and as the overzealous Detective Norman Bunz on HILL STREET BLUES
-Ed O'Neill before his co-starring days as the perverted dysfunctional(Al Bundy)on MARRIED WITH CHILDREN
-Shawn Weatherly in "The Shooter" episode before her co-starring days as the sexy lifeguard(Jill Reilly)on the original BAYWATCH series that ran on NBC from September of 1989 thru the Summer of 1990
-Dennis Farina in "The Snow Queen" episode before his co-starring days on CRIME STORY
-Joe Santos in "The Hot Grounder" episode after his co-starring days as Rockford's often exasperated cop buddy(Detective Dennis Becker)on THE ROCKFORD FILES and before his co-starring days as Magnum's cop buddy(Lt. Nolan Page)in the last 2 seasons of MAGNUM, PI
-Joanna Kerns in the pilot episode before her co-starring days on GROWING PAINS
-Morgan Woodward in the "Long Way From LA" episode during his co-starring days on DALLAS
-Alan Autry in the "High Bleacher Man" episode before his co-starring days on IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT
-Nancy Stafford in "The Avenging Angel" episode before her co-starring days on MATLOCK and after her co-starring days on ST. ELSEWHERE
-Cynthia Eilbacher in the "Pen Pals" episode after her co-starring days on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS
-Steve Williams in "The Beach Boy" episode before his co-starring days as Capt. Fuller on 21 JUMP STREET

First Rate All The Way May 10, 2009 STwilight (Pennsylvania, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
They don't make cop shows like this any more. I watched every season of Hunter when it first aired on TV, and am proud to welcome this latest addition into my collection. Of all the seasons of Hunter, this is my favorite. There were some great storylines, and the increased role of the Captain made for some conflict and daring policework on behalf of Rick and DeeDee. There's also a lot of great music on this season, and we see the story unfold of what happened to DeeDee's husband. It is unfortunate this is where the boxed releases of Hunter ends. The only criticism I have is that the discs are two-sided, and sometimes that means they skip or stop playing. This is a must-see season for all devoted Hunter fans. It's also great for people who are fans of good, gritty cop shows. If you are a fan of LA-based cop shows, there is a good new show, Southland, that might give fill your need. It's nice that they are still trying to make things in that genre.

If you like detective stories this is definitely a "must" see. This shows how Hunter and the Brass Cupcake become partners.
