Amazon.com The combined charisma of Diane Lane and John Cusack gives a lift to Must Love Dogs, a romantic comedy built on the comic potential of internet dating. Sarah (Lane, Under the Tuscan Sun), a preschool teacher and recent divorcee, has her entire family bugging her to get back in the dating pool. Finally her sister (dependable second banana Elizabeth Perkins, Big) puts an ad for Sarah online; a host of questionable prospects respond, but Sarah meets one guy--a boat builder named Jake (John Cusack, High Fidelity, Say Anything)--who shows promise, though he himself is recently divorced and a little tender. Unfortunately, Sarah also feels sparks with the father (Dermot Mulroney, My Best Friend's Wedding) of one of her students, and when paths cross, trouble follows. Must Love Dogs has some amusing scenes, but the tone and quality is wildly erratic--it's as if the movie was broken into a dozen parts and randomly assigned to different writers and directors, some of whom were making a bad sitcom, some of whom were making a good sitcom, and some of whom were making a movie that blended wry comedy with some deft psychological insight. The great cast (in addition to solid work from those mentioned above, there's also Stockard Channing and Christopher Plummer) keep the story moving, but for every amusing moment there are two that are plastic, forced, or wince-inducing. --Bret Fetzer

rating both the seller and merchandise June 3, 2009 Diane A. Anderson (So. Calif) I have had some bad luck on Amazon, due to my own thoughtlessness, but this dvd I had purchased arrived quickly, and was exactly as described, if not better. This seller and this product was a deal, and renewed my faith in Amazon and people! Though I still Love Dogs!
More like a 3.5 star movie May 13, 2009 Holly Kincaid (Fishers, IN USA) This is a light, romantic comedy along the lines of "Sleepless in Seatle" or "You've Got Mail". Not terribly deep, but an enjoyable way to spend a Saturday evening. It has been out for awhile but my family just got around to watching it this past weekend and all of us liked it which can be difficult to accomplish sometimes (our ages range from 52 down to 14)! Diane Lane is wonderful and so is John Cusack. Both are strong actors individually and could carry the movie single-handedly but the two of them in the same movie is great. The supporting cast was pretty incredible and I partilarly liked Stockard Channing - she manages to convey an incredibly 3-dimensional character without appearing to be working at it. Outstanding acting on her part. If you enjoy light comedies like those mentioned above, it would be worth your time. Note for parents: It really is a PG-13 movie in my opinion. There is a entire scene lasting several minutes that is very funny, but not appropriate for anyone under 13 (and maybe even older).
Fun to watch... May 4, 2009 Renekins (the boonies, ID USA) This is one of those movies that I like to watch over and over again. It's full of laughs as well as points to ponder.
Not very romantic March 18, 2009 J. Dykstra (Roswell, NM) This is certainly a watchable movie and worth buying. I love romatic movies in which two people who seem unfit for each other for some reason end up together in the end. This movie tries to be that but messes it up. The main character is a teacher, and it seem for all the world in the first half of the movie that she's going to end up with the perfect-guy father of one of her students. The Cusack character has a go at it every so often but it doesn't seem right. However, in the end she ends with him and the last scene of the movie is one in which they are shopping together and seem completely unbelievable as a couple. It's sort of like the time to end the movie came around so the two quickly ended up together. Other than that, it isn't a bad movie and there are some fun scenes. Dianne Lane does a pretty decent job with her character and the dad is an interesting character. If you go into this one realizing it's decent but not a top-shelf romantic movie, you'll like it. Finally, the Dog theme seems really forced and doesn't end up having much of a real effect on the movie.
