This movie would be unable to exist at all were it not for the absurd caricatures of middle class suburban dwellers. Goes beyond believability, relies very heavily on unusual and unlikely situations to make its point. I know, I know, it's supposed to be dark humor, but I've seen plenty of films criticize the 'burbs better("Poltergeist", "American Beauty","Blue Velvet").
Stupid Film February 1, 2009 Blue Sky (California) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this DVD thinking it would be as the synopsis described: smart, ironic, darkly comedic and with a talented cast how could one go wrong. This movie was just plain stupid. It was not smart, funny, redeeming or ironic. I couldn't wait for it to be over. The only character I liked was the little kid who got kidnapped. Everything else was just stupidly psychotic. If a movie like this is supposed to be some ironic commentary on amoral, retarded suburban life than I think it achieved its purpose. I personally would like to watch a film with a spine and characters who are deeply fleshed out and relatable on some human level without pandering to suicide and drug abuse by teens. Not many an intelligent, thoughtful teen would be into this unless they play tons of mindless, violent video games. One reviewer called this movie like a bad episode of Desperate Housewives. I'd like to think that show is smarter and funnier. Waste of money. I should've waited for some late night D-list movie showing of it.
Jamie Bell January 7, 2009 Lauren Z. Jokubaitis (USA) I first saw Jamie Bell in the recommended "Billy Elliot" he has branched out since then to do such dark comedies as this and the recent "Mister Foe" Anyone who likes a funny yet dark movie will love this, it also has an awesome cast as well, Glenn Close, Ralph Fiennes, Carrie Anne Moss and Camilla Bell.
"I hate myself that I didn't even know..." December 8, 2008 Snow White (Orange County) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Chumscrubber stars the ever talented Jamie Bell as Dean, a teenager dealing with the suicide of his best friend Troy(Josh Janowicz) and all the dramatics that are following closely behind. Everyone in Jamie's suburban town seems to be hoped up on some kind of medication, supplement or their own brand of crazy and he seems to be the only one even somewhat stable; although of course to everyone else Jamie seems to be the most volatile of them all. When Crystal(Camilla Belle) comes to Jamie to attempt to comfort him for his loss, Jamie realizes it's all a hoax and that Crystal, along with her friends Billy(Justin Chatwin) and Lee(Lou Taylor Pucci) kidnapped a boy believed to be his younger brother as blackmail in exchange for his dead friends hidden drugs. Of course the kidnapped boy is not Jamie's brother, but the future son of the city's Mayor. The movie is a bit up and down but redeemed itself to me personally in a brilliant scene portraying Jamie's breaking point, when he finally admits to himself how much he misses his deceased friend. Reminiscent of Donnie Darko, Jamie sees Troy hanging in his room and talking to him in a electronic and frighteningly deep voice.( ha ha ) A great coming-of-age tale about living in a messed-up world, dealing with abhorrent circumstances and doing what is apparently the right thing to do.
Dark, Real and Emotional April 21, 2008 B. Kopenhaver (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A scary look inside the prestine suburbs of California, Chumscrubber shows us what it's like to be a kid in today's society where Bread, Circus and Finncial success are all that matter. The acting is very well done, especially for such young people, and the script is also quite good moving the characters along as they learn the lessons associated with their stations. It's a pretty emotional story, it kinda leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth, especially if you see how allegorical and applicable it is to our world today. Overall it's a good movie and I reccomend it whole-heartedly.
