Amazon.com Gene Wilder takes his most unusual role, a naive 19th-century rabbi sent from his native Poland to the fledgling Jewish community in San Francisco, in this warm-hearted comic adventure. The trusting soul is easy prey for the con men and criminals who prey on the immigrants arriving in the Philadelphia port and the rabbi, beaten but unbowed, continues his trek West solo: broke, underequipped, and hopelessly lost. Harrison Ford, fresh from Star Wars, is the roguish outlaw who adopts the determined traveler and the two become unlikely friends as they make their way through one scrape after another. Wilder makes a sincere and sympathetic hero, his faith and courage seeing him through one crisis after another, and fresh-faced Ford makes an endearing scamp of a bank robber. The meandering adventure, overlong at two hours, takes its time as the duo traverses the gorgeous American countryside and end up in the bustling Barbary Coast San Francisco of the Gold Rush era. Legendary hard-edged action director Robert Aldrich (Kiss Me Deadly, The Dirty Dozen) brings a gentle touch and easygoing humor to this family-oriented adventure, but old habits die hard. While staying within PG parameters, Aldrich adds a little grit to the Old West fistfights and gunfights. --Sean Axmaker

PREDICTABILITY IN AN ODD SCENARIO March 2, 2010 C. Rocklein Not a great vehicle for Ford who looks like a kid playing cowboys and indians, though Wilder was mostly convincing as the rabbi. I hate to be a killjoy, but I think this movie is wildly over-rated on this amazon listing. But if you thought Hanover Street was great, then you'll probably like this as well. I didn't really beleive Ford as bank robber/friend to the rabbi, and for his part, Gene Wilder couldn't always make up his mind between playing it straight and playing it silly (certainly his trip to the mission was a little ridiculous). Ford is too much of a modern to be a cowboy bank robber with a little bandanna around his neck, or maybe I've become too used to him in his role of 'wronged family man' (see his latest 20 movies) or Han Solo, but he seemed miscast, though a miscast Harrison Ford would still boost box office sales. I doubt this lasted very long at the box office. It's a predictable little movie, has some 'positive moral value' moments, but finally it's unbeleivable as a straight ahead story and doesn't have enough humourous moments to be considered comedy. If not for the occasional profanity and some gunfight scenes, it might have been perfect for kids.
Best Ford Movie ever February 10, 2010 Kathleen Rageur (baton rouge, la USA) I was so glad to see this on DVD. Such an adorable story, Well done. Wilder and Ford totally complement each other.
I would recommend this movie to anyone....
one funny movie February 6, 2010 Michael Rawlins the first time I saw this movie I laughed till i cried, it's a most have.
Excellent comedic western and tribute to America January 20, 2010 Mark E. Baxter (Layton, UT United States) I have watched and re-watched this movie for years with family and friends. This is one of the rare movies that I can watch over and over and still enjoy.
A big attraction has got to be the two stars Harrison Ford and Gene Wilder. Ford plays a good-hearted rascal as well as anyone ever has. Wilder was the master of the excessive, and to me irritating, comedic character often found in Mel Brooks movies. But in this movie the director has Wilder play a more subdued and true everyman who is confronted by challenges yet still retains his humanity and optimistic world view.
The plot centers around Wilder a Jewish rabbi in training in Poland. The Jewish synagogue in 1849 era San Francisco sends for a rabbi for their growing congregation. Wilder is a gentle doofus, a favorite of the children, but not the sharpest knife in the drawer and he is sent off to America sadly unprepared and unknowledgeable. He is robbed and beaten and then makes his way from New York to San Francisco through the charity of various groups and through the help of a bank-robbing cowboy with a heart of gold who then guides him to San Francisco.
Along the way, Wilder and then the two actors have encounters with Amish, Indians, cut-throats, and a monastic order. Some of these scenes are hilarious.
One of the themes that other reviewers leave out is how Wilder's character comes to appreciate America with its wide open spaces and open-hearted people that help Wilder out over and over. Wilder frequently praises the people and the land as they help him on his journey and there is a patriotic goodness in this aspect of the film that is sadly lacking in many modern westerns that have substituted dirt and nastiness for the true characteristics of the western settler.
The only drawback of this film that should be a family oriented movie is the language. There is frequent profanity spread throughout the move so I wouldn't allow anyone younger than a teen to see the movie unless you can find it edited. No nudity and no sex though there are frequent references to brothels etc.
Overall, one of my favorite movies and one I have waited for years to come out on DVD since my VHS wore out. 4 stars.
