Amazon.com It's Sergio Leone meets Sam Peckinpah meets Quentin Tarantino in this ultraviolent, mythological shoot-'em-up by auteur Robert Rodriguez. In Desperado, Rodriguez creates larger-than-life, genre-tweaking stock characters and puts them through their paces. As they stride bravely through an Old West lightly dusted with camp humor, they're periodically called upon to nimbly dodge bullets and fireballs through outrageously choreographed displays of Hollywood pyrotechnics. In this bigger-budget semi-remake/semi-sequel to Rodriguez's indie sensation, El Mariachi (made, famously, for $7,000), Antonio Banderas is the darkly charismatic El Mariachi, the Mysterious Stranger in town; Steve Buscemi is perfectly cast as his weasely, motor-mouth Comic Sidekick, laying the groundwork for El Mariachi's entrance by spinning saloon stories to build up his legend; Cheech Marin is a standout as the Bartender, who really knows how to handle a toothpick; and gorgeous Salma Hayek is, well, the Girl--treated to the kind of full-blown, slow-mo introduction the movies traditionally lavish on beautiful new stars. It doesn't add up to much, but it's a kick. Be careful not to blow out your speakers with the DVD's Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. --Jim Emerson

Love it! January 7, 2010 Movie Nut (Rochester NY) Great movie! I love Antonio, Cheech, and Salma Hayak & have watched this movie plenty of times...Got it pretty quick too.
Desperado. December 7, 2009 Jose Lopez (Miami,Florida USA) Desperado is an ok movie, little overdone, excessive violence and near impossible things happening. It's worth watching for Selma Hayek. It's long, and at times pointless.dvd has no special features and the main screen looks like it was homemade.dreadful music too.
Desperado November 20, 2009 Arnita D. Brown (USA) This movie a very entertaining, stylish, shoot-em-up. south-of the border film. Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek were both made for this movie.
Awesome movie even gets better!! November 19, 2009 Gian-karlo Perez (Modesto, CA) This marvelous bit of work by Robert Rodriguez gets a superbit makeover since Blu-Ray is still not available. I have a home theater set-up at home with projector and surround sound and the supertbit version brought out the action even more than the original(yes, I own the DVD also). For those of us who can't wait for the Blu-Ray, Superbit is a nice consolation price. Plus talking about price, you can't beat it!! If you're a fan of Desperado then the Superbit edition is worth the few dollars it will cost you!
So over-the-top it might as well be in the sky October 11, 2009 One-Line Film Reviews (Easton, MD) The Bottom Line:
I also can crack a grin when guitar cases turn out to be housing a variety of deadly weapons or when action sequences become laughably frenetic and over-the-top, but seeing such things for 100 straight minutes makes one crave a real character or actual suspense; inferior in every way to the film it's quasi-remaking (El Mariachi), this is a film to skip.
