Amazon.com Much like the late Rodney Dangerfield, some films just can't get any respect. Shelved by Miramax for two years, An Unfinished Life was released with little fanfare between Morgan Freeman's Oscar win and Lasse Hallstroem's higher-profile Casanova. Despite critical praise from some quarters, the heartland drama got lost amidst the shuffle. The title comes from the epitaph of Griffin, late son of Wyoming rancher Einar (a rumpled Robert Redford). Between chores, he looks after ranch hand Mitch (Freeman), who was mauled by a bear the year before. One day, daughter-in-law Jean (Jennifer Lopez) and granddaughter Griff (Becca Gardner) drop by the ranch unexpectedly. They're on the run from Jean's abusive boyfriend, Gary (Damian Lewis), back in Iowa. "I don't want you here," Einar states flatly--he blames her for Griffin's death 12 years ago--but the look on the kid's face convinces him to relent. While Jean works as a waitress in town and embarks on a tentative relationship with Sheriff Crane (Josh Lucas), his newfound granddaughter helps to take care of Mitch. Just as the four are starting to form a loose-knit family, Gary comes looking for Jean and upsets the delicate balance. It may pack fewer surprises than the superior What's Eating Gilbert Grape and the bear symbolism may be a mite heavy-handed, but the deeply unfashionable An Unfinished Life deserves a second chance to find an audience. --Kathleen C. AN UNFINSHED LIFE April 27, 2009 Randy L. Cross (FERNDALE, WASHINGTON) I am not a big J Lo fan but this is one of her better movies. Just look at the cast, Morgan Freeman, Robert Redford and you will know that it is a good movie.
Unfinished Life April 20, 2009 Margaret Carman (Columbia, SC) My son and I have seen this movie several times and think it is great. The characters/actors give moving performances. I purchased this DVD as a gift for my oldest son, as I didn't want him and his family to miss seeing it.
An Unfinished Life April 13, 2009 Bonnie Ricks (Big Sandy, TN) This is one of my favorite movies... Becca Gardner got thrown into the fray doing her first movie with four powerful actors, and she not only held her own, she stole the movie! I hope to see a LOT more of this young lady! As for the supplier, the DVD was shipped very quickly, and arrived in perfect, brand new condition, as promised. I can't say anything better than that!
An Unfinished Life March 31, 2009 melodious This is an excellent film about facing the past and the future unafraid. It is about hope and expectation even when life has been difficult. An unfinished life is the life all of us live or can live if we choose.
The nature of things. February 7, 2009 A reader. This movie has a quiet presence. It doesn't shout, it doesn't light up, it doesn't shake. There are few movies now which show intergenerational relationships. There are few films which include elders. We are all teachers, and hopefully when older we can have some wisdom to pass along to others. There is a bear-like presence among the humans, as well as in the presence of an actual bear. All are touched. The people in the Wyoming town share space with wild creatures. Robert Redford's character is gruff, with a soft center. Both his deceased son and granddaughter have the name of Griff. The abusive boyfriend is as impulsively unpredictable as a bear. And then Morgan Freeman's character points out that he was mauled by a bear, while the bear was just being himself. This film seems to flow naturally. Older people are filled with stories. We wear down many pairs of shoes while alive. Maybe the "delay" in this film's release lined it up with open minds. In view of death, this is a film about the nature of life which unfolds in a beautiful, natural setting. Bravo.
