Amazon.com Without force-feeding its timely message, Good Night, and Good Luck illuminates history to enlighten our present, when the need for a free and independent press is more important than ever. In 90 breathtaking minutes of efficient and intricate storytelling, writer-director George Clooney and cowriter Grant Heslov pay honorable tribute to the journalistic integrity of legendary CBS newscaster Edward R. Murrow, Director George Clooney | who confronted the virulent and overzealous anti-Communist witch-hunting of Wisconsin Sen. Joseph McCarthy in 1953-54, and emerged as a triumphant truth-seeker against the abuses of corporate and governmental power. David Strathairn as Edward R. Murrow | As played by David Strathairn, Murrow is a dogged realist, keenly aware of the smear tactics that will be employed against him; Clooney provides crucial backup as Murrow's "See It Now" producer and closest confidante Fred Friendly, forming a fierce but not entirely fearless triumvirate of broadcasting bravery with CBS chief William Paley (Frank Langella), who anxiously champions Murrow's cause under constant threat of reprisals. While using crisp black-and-white cinematography (by Robert Elswit) to vividly recreate the electrifying atmosphere of the CBS newsroom and the early years of television, Clooney (son of long-time Cincinnati newsman Nick Clooney) proves his directorial skill by juggling big themes and an esteemed ensemble cast, never stooping to simplification of ethically complex material. Good Night, and Good Luck is an instant classic, destined for all the accolades it so richly deserves. --Jeff Shannon Learn More About Edward R. Scary Lesson in Civics March 17, 2010 Rick Twain It seems to me that we forget our past awfully easily in this country, and "Good Night, and Good Luck" is a good reminder of just how easy it is to abandon freedom in the name of defending it. The film does a fine job of dramatizing one of the more shameful moments in our history, and given the environment of fear, jingoism and name-calling that characterizes our politics today, ought to be required viewing in our schools. The story is simple and not fictional, even if the particular lines and such are: in the 1950's, Senator McCarthy gave aid and comfort to our enemies by nearly tearing America apart, and Edward R. Murrow, who both believed in the ability of television to educate and the danger it posed in perpetrating ignorance, stood up to the senator. It was an act of journalistic heroism nearly unthinkable today, with our so-called news (both liberal and conservative) actually being thinly disguised attack ads for shallow ideologies that I suspect Mr. Murrow would conclude give aid and comfort to our current enemies.
David Strathairn does a brilliant job as Edward R. Murrow (how many actors would risk lung cancer for a role?) and the cast around him is perfectly done. The drama is subdued but tense, an authentic recreation of a newsroom. The more subtle prejudices of the day, racial and gendered, are perfectly handled. Even though I went in knowing that Senator McCarthy was eventually brought down by his own hubris and the underlying strength of the American system of laws, the film still held my attention. This is not shallow entertainment: it is a lesson in how close our country came to becoming little different from our communist rivals, and how brave Americans stood up to prevent that from happening. Every journalist should be required to not only watch this film, but write 100 pages on why it is so important to learn from it, and from the brave Mr. Murrow.
Excellent movie March 6, 2010 Mary Bellis Waller (Milwaukee) Strongly recommend this movie -- it takes us through a crucial period of US history when important decisions were being made. Very interesting contrast to the crap that masquerades as real news nowadays.
Black and White Blu Ray December 6, 2009 J. Wentworth (Hartford, CT USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Good Night, and Good Luck. is a great movie and looks nice on blu ray. However, if you are looking for a film that will get the most out of your blu ray player then this probably isn't the best title to get. The picture is crisp and clear as one would come to expect from blu ray but the movie is in black and white. The blu ray has the same additional content that the DVD has so you're not missing out on anything. If you have an HDTV then the DVD will be upconverted and look as just as good as HD. If you own the DVD an upgrade is not neccessary.
Great DVD. Thank you! November 30, 2009 irritation free in the sack (utah) Quick delivery, DVD as described. Great price. Thank you. I'd love to buy from you again.
Ed Murrow September 12, 2009 Beatriz S. Wronski (Michigan USA) I have the complete Ed Murrow collection, and I must say this portrays him and his fight with McCarthy very well, the good thing is it cut McCarthy,s venomous speech against Murrow to the nitty-gritty, making it more understandable, without the rambling that went on and on. I know I will watch it more than once.
