Ok...I don't understand all the positive reviews on this movie. This was so godawful, so unbelieveably SLOW AND so UNFUNNY, I had to turn it off after 10 minutes of viewing. Just because we don't find something slapstick hilarious doesn't mean we don't have a sense of humor. We all have different tastes and styles. And this movie wasn't it for me. STAY AWAY from this piece of crap movie.

    4 out of 5 stars You're a flipping idiot if you haven't seen this!   May 23, 2009

Do you ever feel like our world needs a well-written comedy that isn't driven by mindless sex or profanity? Well if you are, you've found the perfect movie! Here we have an independent comedy written/directed by rookie director Jared Hess who captures the true reality of a nerd who's life can't get any worse at this point in time.

The movie starts with a cheesy (even though I'm OK with it being cheesy), opening credits sequence where there is a different background every 5-10 seconds, and you either see a plate of food with names written out of condiments, or names on pencils or sticks of Chapstick. After this you see Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder), an afro-nerd who groans while waiting for the bus in Preston, Idaho. At school he draws medieval warriors/beasts, eats lunch with his friend Pedro (Efren Ramirez), and is pushed around by the school bully. He then returns home to his older brother Kip (Aaron Ruell) who loves to chat online, and his grandma. Napoleon also feeds the family llama, Tina. So, that's his regular life, and the movie does a good job at establishing that in a comedic way in less than 10 minutes.

The movie then starts to introduce more characters, like the stuck-up Summer Wheatley (Haylie Duff), the jock Don, Napoleon's uncle named "Uncle" Rico (Jon Gries), the nerdy Deb (Tina Majorino), and later Kip's soul mate Lawfanduh. Even though this movie has no central plot, it has some main events such as Napoleon's odd job on a chicken farm, Uncle Rico and Kip's salesmanship trek, the Preston High School dance, and the student council elections near the end. Throughout the film there are scenes of extremely random, yet hilarious humor that will live on in people's minds forever. One of my favorites in the movie is when Napoleon is pissed at Uncle Rico, so he throws a grapefruit at Uncle Rico's windshield, and is wrestled down by Uncle Rico afterward.

The movie is basically a random joke comedy with no central plot, but in a sense it works for the film because it doesn't need one in this case. It sort of survives on its own, which most comedies usually don't. Cinematography is kind of boring because most shots are still and don't have much flair, but sometimes the camera shots move around a little in more active scenes. Besides that point, this is a great film for anyone because of the lack of inappropriate content, and the genius humor.

The only true reason why this movie got a 4-star rating is because of the Blu-ray edition (the movie is 5-stars standing alone). The imagery doesn't exactly look HD because of the movie's very low-budget filming. Also, the special features are packed with content but every bit and piece of it is registered in standard-definition and in 4:3 full frame, not 1080p HD and 16:9 wide-screen like most other Blu-ray discs have. The 5.1 DTS-HD audio is incredible though...

Still the same, if you haven't watched this movie, buy it from the website you're currently on!

5 out of 5 stars Hillarious! (and disturbing flashbacks to my college classmates)   May 6, 2009
The Tao of Netflix (Washington, DC)
This is a great movie, and very family friendly. It involves one of the most socially awkward people ever to grace the screens (Napoleon); the best part is that he's so awkward, but he has absolutely no idea that he is, and readily assumes that's he's a dude, particularly as exemplified by his prom outfit choice. Sadly, he completely reminds me of practically every classmate I had at college, gasp.
