Universal Doom (Unrated Extended Edition) - HD-DVD
A frantic call for help from a remote research station on Mars sends a team of mercenary Marines into action. Led by The Rock and Karl Urban, they descend into the Olduvai Research Station, where they find a legion of nightmarish creatures, lurking in the darkness, killing at will. Once there, the Marinesmust use an arsenal of firepower to carry out their mission: nothing gets out alive. Based on the hugely popular video game, "Doom" is an explosive action-packed thrill ride!

Grab your BFG and get ready to kick some Martian-demon butt in Doom, another entry in the increasingly crowded videogame-to-movie genre. The Rock plays Sarge, the commander of a squad of Marines sent to investigate a disturbance at a scientific research facility on Mars. Among the squad is John Grimm (Karl Urban, who played Eomer in The Lord of the Rings), who turns out to have had a previous relationship with Samantha (Rosamund Pike, Die Another Day), the scientist who's accompanying the Marines in order to retrieve some vital data from the facility. Based on id Software's legendary first-person shooter, Doom tries its best to look like a game, with dark, angled corridors, ferocious creatures appearing out of nowhere, and a variety of lethal weapons that will, like the aforementioned BFG, warm the cockles of a gamer's heart. There's also one memorable sequence that actually turns the movie into a first-person shooter; the good news is that in the context of the whole film, it's not quite as goofy as it might have been. And that's not a bad frame of reference for the film in general. Considering the game-to-movie field includes such duds as Wing Commander, if you go into Doom with low expectations, you'll probably find it a surprisingly respectable horror/sci-fi thriller in the Resident Evil vein (including its somewhat obligatory subplot of corporate wrongdoing). Also in its favor is that it's unabashedly R-rated, for the extreme gore that is a trademark of the game. After all, the purpose of the movie is to pack scares and thrills into a setting that gamers will quickly recognize. In that sense, it qualifies as a success. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Weird but...   February 2, 2010
    Laura (SW Virginia)
I love this movie. I am not a fan of the games though. I really hope they make a sequel. As for some people saying this movie strayed too far from the games my husband said it wasn't true. He said it had alot of the same things although where it took place was definately different. GO REAPER! **YUMMY**

    4 out of 5 stars Doom- a bloody/action packed/sci-fi horror film   January 30, 2010
    POD JAWS
Doom is an awesome movie and it is kind of funny that Dwayne "THE ROCK" Johnson is now playing a tooth fairy insted of a sarge in the movie doom

Plot- (Quite simple actually) a team of space soldiers are sent to an area where science has gone haywire, now they stumble upon mutants that are taking them down one by one and the question is who will surive "THE ROCK" or Karl Urban and his sister!

Acting- awesome/bad-ass/somewhat funny acting with lines such as "i wasnt supposed to die!" or "There's something behind me isn't there!

Gore- a pipe to the hand, a decapitation, lots of blood splatter, bashed bodies, a severed hand, gory images and more!

Bottom Line- 4 out of 5, it's just like the critics say, a roller coaster ride!

    Rated R for strong violence/gore, and language/ Time 101min/ 2005/ Color

5 out of 5 stars 5 Years Later... I really liked it!   January 19, 2010
    Bill F. Armitage (Canada)
Funny, 5 years later... I really liked it! I hated Doom when it first came out. The plot was very different from the game, and not better, it had "The Rock," the next Hulk Hogan wannabee as a main actor... and just wasn't what I expected, so I was disappointed.
So I just popped it back in years later... and enjoyed every minute. It's actually a pretty decent movie in it's own right. The plot, while different, is pretty good, the effects well done, excellent sets and I don't have the same problem with The Rock as I did back then.
Some movies, like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Van Helsing and Doom, are much better once you get over the "they weren't what I was expecting or what I wanted" disappointment.
So give it another try and enjoy.

    4 out of 5 stars Doom   January 1, 2010
    Arnita D. Brown (USA)
It's not the greatest sci-fi horror movie ever, but I liked it. I'd say it's the second best film adaption of a video game after Resident Evil: Apocalypse. If you're an FPS game freak, there's lots of game references in this movie to amuse you all the way to the end. A pretty decent videogame adaption.

1 out of 5 stars It couldn't have been worse   December 28, 2009
Brandon H. Einhorn (Millburn, NJ United States)
Frequently when I know a movie is supposed to be bad I am able to enjoy it. My expectations are lowered and I can enjoy teh action or special effects or something. This was the worst movie I have seen this year (other than the Living Dead).
What would it ahve taken for the story to be a little better? It wouldn't have had any impact on the filming, but it would have made for a more enjoyable movie.
Watch any horror movie before watching this.
