4 out of 5 stars Day of Wrath   April 30, 2009

An interesting historical eventthat I had never heard of. I'm sure it was changed significantly for the movie, but was still interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly good movie   February 1, 2009

I found this movie in the cut-out bin at the local video store. When I asked the clerk about it, he didn't know anything about it or anyone who had ever watched it. I've semi-followed Christopher Lambert over the years, from "Greystoke...Tarzan" to "Highlander" to now. I especially enjoy that "Highlander" still holds up pretty well over the years.

"Day of Wrath" is a very nice little detective-costume drama-action movie. Lambert is the sheriff of a Spanish village who investigate the murders of local nobles/aristocrats. Why are they being murdered and why does no one seem to care? Set in Spain during the Inquisition, the movie explores power, intimidation, apathy, loyalty, and acquiescence to corruption. What is the greater good? To whom do we owe our loyalty and duty? "Day of Wrath" examines how we choose to live our lives and what choices we make when faced with these situations, and what are the consequences of our decisions.

This is an enjoyable and satisfying movie if you pay attention and follow the plot. If you have a short attention span, or if you want the plot spoon-fed to you, or if you want non-stop action without a plot, then I would suggest you pass this by. Continue to enjoy your movies written by screenwriters who do not understand pacing and timing, and who were schooled in the "throw-everything-out-there-at-once, some-of-it-should-stick-to-the-wall technique.

I'm a sucker for movies such as, L.A. Confidential, The Usual Suspects, The Name of the Rose, Memento, and Enigma - movies that take their time and make you think. But, I also enjoy little known movies such as Mumford, Ginger Snaps, The Yakuza (w/ Mitchum), Wanda Nevada, Irma Vep - movies that are gems with interesting plots, paced story lines and good actors.

And...oh yeah, I loved all those Sherlock Holmes stories I read as a kid.

Take a chance on this movie. Don't expect it to knock your socks off, but you may find you enjoy it more than you expected.

1 out of 5 stars worst movie i have ever seen   December 15, 2007

this movie is SO bad. it is almost laughable at points (like when someone dies in the most awkward way ever from hitting their head after falling down three stairs.) would not pay 50 cents for it. on the cover it looks like the guy from frasier... yeah terrible.

4 out of 5 stars Nor Bad...   May 13, 2007

Gory suspense, with the plot hatched against the background of the Spanish Inquisition.

We have Brian Blessed in the role of the governor Lord Francisco de Ruiz. A superb actor! I remember him as Augustus Ceasar in the immortal BBC series "I, Claudius".

James Faulkner is not less compelling in the role of friar Anselmo.

What do both have in common? Well, they are both British dramatic actors, which explains their superb performance, something that is missing in our hero Ruy de Mendoza, portrayed by Christopher Lambert, who sounds superficial at times.

All in all, a violent and compelling drama. Not bad at all.

This film is amazing! To my knowledge, is the only one of it's kind addressing the conversion of Spanish Jews to Christianity during the 1400 and 1500's. History shows that some stayed in Spain and took on new identities as in this thriller of a film. Here in New Mexico, Arizona, and southern Colorado live thousands of descendants who were saved from the Inquision by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella because they loaned money to the Spanish crown for Columbus to come to the new world as well as for Spanish crusades. The Two largest land grants in the Southwestern United States were colonized by the Jews who left Spain and what an awesome script to show what happened with others who had secrets within secrets in order to continue to live in Spain over the next generations. I would seriously think about giving the Hungarian cast and crew five stars.
As for someone's comment about Christopher Lambert...You've got to be kidding!!! The man has reinvented himself from a songwriter in love with an older woman in LOVE SONG ( in his earlier career) to a Cajun Cop in Chicago who has turned away from his Catholic faith and yet uses the parts of the New Testament he knows to catch a really sick serial killer in RESURRECTION. He played an international master chess player forced to help the police and a psychologist track a killer in the thriller KNIGHT MOVES...it is kind of like saying that every actor who plays in theatre and film in period pieces is stuck...Don't miss this sleeper just because it didn't have big studio distribution...our past shows us so much about or present and how we can influence a better future...If you get the DVD, the extras are great. None of this film is dry, slow or boring.
