Product Description Movie DVD
Amazon.com Some comedy is like a scalpel; the Scary Movie series is a hand grenade, spewing bodily fluids and big-breasted women in all directions as they lampoon the latest horror. In Scary Movie 4's case, the main targets are War of the Worlds, The Village, The Grudge, Saw, and Tom Cruise jumping all over Oprah's couch (the scariest of the lot). Along the way, potshots get taken at non-horror fare like Brokeback Mountain and Million Dollar Baby, as well as obvious targets like Michael Jackson and George W. Bush, among others. Anna Faris (Lost in Translation) and Regina Hall (The Honeymooners) return as the central characters wandering through a crazy quilt of horror scenarios, joined by Craig Bierko (Cinderella Man) doing a dead-on parody of Cruise at his most manic. Cameos include everyone from Charlie Sheen to Shaquille O'Neal to Carmen Electra. Some of it's funny, some of it's not, but there's a generally buoyant zaniness that comes from director David Zucker, one of the creators of Airplane!, which started the whole firehose-of-jokes aesthetic. --Bret Fetzer

scary clever, more often than not February 14, 2010 David M. Rossi Much as we hate to admit, we want to be scared, that's why we watch the horror genre, and it's because of the high suspension of disbelief factor that we end up also seeing comic send-ups of the genre. The good news is that grand-master of comedy Zucker seems to be trying to get back more of the feeling of dead-on hits from earlier in his spoof career like the Airplane movies, Hot Shots, and Naked Gun. It's just too bad that elements from earlier in the scary movie franchise still haven't been entirely excised from the scary movie formula. In 4, the jokes that are arguably 'on', are more 'on' than in any of the scary movie series. And there are definitely a huge amount of 'on' jokes. But there's still also too much that makes it feel like just as scary movie 4 is hitting it's stride toward comedic greatness, it's reigned back down a few notches. Plus, unlike the previous Scary Movies, there just wasn't enough spoofing going on. In earlier iterations, you could pick out jokes from literally a dozen or more sources, in 4 it seemed to just be spoofing three movies continuously, with an occasional pop culture reference thrown in. Come on, there have been TONS of scare-fests both good and bad that easily could have been targeted for pokes in the ribs. Scary Movie 5 has been a long time in speculation and I hope that the extra time means more of a comedic blood bath for horror fans to chuckle at. I'm ready to laugh, and even if you hated any or all of the scary movie series, you, like me, will plunk you butt down in a dark theater to giggle once more. 3.50 stars
funny January 21, 2010 David A. Smith (Webberville, Mi, USA) okay i hope this is the last because if they keep on going they'll ruin the series. i like four but it wasn't as funny as the first three. i still like it but coulda've been better.
Scary Movie 4 August 5, 2009 Susan Hunter Another form of silly entertainment that works. The movie is fun, with an actually storyline which anyone can find amusing. Another movie to make us laugh- good job.
Star cast as well :)
Worse than I expected it to be. April 19, 2009 Amber (Georgia) I admit, I went into this movie already judging it since I knew it would mock some of the movies I really love. But the level of stupidity was much higher than I had hoped it would be, and after a while I could feel my brain cells dying by the hundreds. I eventually walked out of the room to read a book and try to regain some of my lost time and intelligence. The humor in this movie and others like it is way too juvenile for me to appreciate, and I honestly did not like any of the people who acted in the film. I will never see another one of these atrocities again.
I did find this to be the best of the series... April 6, 2009 S. Ring (Rocky Mountains) There were some gags that didn't hit home but nothing to drag the whole movie down. This is the most visually interesting and ambitious one and as far as I'm concerned the 4th time was the charm. IN this case the gratuitous bits, like the Oprah interview at the end, actually worked great and showed a growing confidence in the material, although I wouldn't mind if they stopped while they were ahead (which, of course, they didn't).
