Amazon.com Credit The Benchwarmers for achieving the impossible: It makes the 2005 remake of The Bad News Bears look like a masterpiece. They're essentially the same film, with the same lowbrow PG-13 humor (mostly involving bodily functions, broad slapstick, little people, nerds, geeks, and nose-picking), but this baseball comedy earns a few brownie points for its heart-warming message about including non-athletic kids (i.e. "benchwarmers") in Little League baseball, if only to boost their confidence and give them a moment of ball-field glory. It's a pleasant sentiment intended to encourage under-achievers to feel good about themselves, and that makes this loose-and-goofy vehicle for Rob Schneider, David Spade, and Napoleon Dynamite's Jon Heder an easygoing time-killer. Parents with good taste should be warned that his movie has no taste at all (it's hopelessly mired in the swamp of fart jokes and juvenile sight-gags), and is there really a need for mild profanity in a movie like this? That said, there are a few laughs in the efforts of Schneider and his ultra-nerdy pals as they form a team of rejects and go to bat against an enemy squad of current and former school-bullies, led by former late-night talk-show host Craig Kilborn. In addition to Schneider and Spade, Saturday Night Live alumni Jon Lovitz and Tim Meadows show up for an easy paycheck, and director Dennis Dugan handles the dumb-and-dumber shtick as if he were on vacation, sipping margaritas and shamelessly going for the easy laughs. If that's what you're looking for, you've come to the right place.--Jeff Shannon

the best movie ever July 3, 2009 Alisha Loosemore (phoenix, az usa) this movie is so stupidly funny, its the only movie that i can watch over ten times, its just so funny and entertaining
Nerds vs. Bullies? May 17, 2009 Bryan A. Pfleeger (Metairie, Louisiana United States) Dennis Dugan's The Benchwarmers is one of those movies that never really lives up to its hype. The story of three adult nerds who take on the local bullies in order to open up the sport of baseball to everyone is a little farfetched but this is comedy. The three nerds Ritchie (David Spade), Clark (Jon Heder) and Gus (Rob Schneider) come across some local bullies picking on the son of local millionaire, Mel (Jon Lovitz) and decide to take take the bullies on in a game of pickup baseball. After winning the game the three decide to take on the cause for nerds everywhere and start tournament with the grand prize being a new stadium. For the next 90 minutes we get a mix of Revenge of the Nerds meets Big League and the mixture doesn't always work. We get all the usual bodily function jokes and goofiness but there is just not a lot holding the film together. Look for a cameo appearance by Reggie Jackson and some decent work by Gus' smoking hot wife Liz (Molly Sims) and TV host Craig Kilborn as bad guy Jerry. The standand definition disc featured good image and sound quality along with four featurettes, some deleted scenes, a funny easter egg starring Lovitz, and two commentaries (one with Dudan , the other with Spade and Heder). Unfortunately this film never found its audience. It was just too dumb for most adults and not accessible enough for really young children.

Awful but Entertaining September 14, 2008 N. Bilmes (Vernon, CT United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Let me start out by saying that if I were drunk, stoned, or had an IQ in the 70s I would have loved this movie. Unfortunately I was completely sober and my IQ is solidly in the triple digits. Within 5 minutes it was clear that this movie was going to be horrible. This movie was so bad I don't know where to begin trying to explain how bad it was. Should I tell you about how there are about 20 shots of John Heder eating boogers? There were times that I was so appalled by how bad the movie was I cringed and covered my face. The jokes were old, the characters ridiculous, the story stale, and the direction and pacing wretched. There were so many fart jokes, vomiting jokes, lesbian jokes, gay jokes, etc..I felt like I was watching a movie put together by 12 year olds. The number of roles filled by ESPN anchors and ex-jocks was astounding, and Sean Salisbury deserves mention for being willing to embarass himself more than anyone else in the movie, and the competition was fierce. When Rob Schneider is the best actor in a movie, you know you're not in for an Oscar winner.
so-so July 20, 2008 Mr. Mark A. Gonzalez (Dover, DE United States) The movie could have been more family friendly minus the "potty humor". Also I thought the negative depiction of the Dominican ballplayer in the film was culturally insensitive to the Dominican people.
