Amazon.com essential video Memorable mostly as the film that introduced filmgoers to Tom Cruise and Sean Penn, both of whom nearly steal the film from its nominal star, Timothy Hutton. Hutton, fresh from his Oscar for Ordinary People, plays the top cadet at a private military school run by George C. Scott. When the announcement is made that the school will be closed, the inmates take over the asylum with military precision. Hutton is caught among his sense of duty to mentor Scott, the rabid militarism of cadet Cruise, and the rational arguments of Penn, as Hutton's best friend. Then a cadet kills one of the cops responding to the crisis, and suddenly this game of playing soldiers takes on a warlike atmosphere. But director Harold Becker can't hold it together; Hutton isn't up to carrying the film, and the tension rapidly drains from the Darryl Ponicsan script. --Marshall Fine

I thought this was a pretty good movie. I was on the edge of my seat to see if they were going to live, who was going to die, and what would cause their breaking point.

Military life is hard, and even more so during combat. This movie showed military structure, but it also shows "Brain Washing" at it's best. All these institutions are is a dumping ground for unwanted children.
great military-issue movie September 3, 2009 Kitfox Bill (Georgia) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
For these fledgling actors, you can see why all of them became so great. I think this is Sean Penns first movie, Tim Huttons second. Worth watching.
RATED R -VIOLENT TRASH July 16, 2009 S. Gliebe 1 out of 13 found this review helpful
This movie is supposed to be rated PG. Looking for a wholesome patriotic movie with a message? Look somewhere else. This movie is pointless. It should be rated R. It is sad, extremely violent and all you take away from it is seeing young men/boys die. It really is garbage.
Good movie and service May 25, 2009 Tommy V (Beachwood, New Jersey United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
First off, recieved movie in a just a few days after ordering. Nicely shippped. Movie is still a great one. Kind of neat seeing Sean Penn and Tom Cruise so young and in the same movie. Overall, just a great all around expierence.
