Amazon.com If the end of Friends left a hole in your life, take a look at How I Met Your Mother. Quirky young urban folk grappling with life and love--check. Charming, good-looking actors who aren't afraid of looking like idiots for the sake of a good joke--check. Crisp, solid writing that sticks comfortably within the sitcom format, but is fresh enough to nudge the show into surprising and inventive moments--check. In fact, the creators of How I Met Your Mother should be embarrassed by how close they hew to the Friends formula--except that they do it so well. Let's face it, Friends didn't invent this territory (tales of twentysomething life), they just refined it. How I Met Your Mother quickly cultivates its own flavor: A little more openly romantic than most sitcoms, willing to let a scene take a quiet or off-kilter turn, trusting that not every viewer has to get every joke. The hub of the likable cast is Josh Radnor, who keeps Ted (a single guy ready to settle down) from being annoying, despite his neuroses and perfectionism. Cobie Smulders gives Robin (the girl Ted thinks might be the one, but who doesn't want to settle down) enough goofy, tomboyish charm that she feels like a person and not an idealized love interest. Jason Segel (Freaks and Geeks) and Alyson Hannigan (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, American Pie), plays Ted's soon-to-be-married best friends Marshall and Lily with enough lingering doubt in their engaged happiness to keep them from becoming too comfortable. And rounding out the cast is Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser, M.D.), shedding his good-guy image as Barney, a crass, lecherous cad who, nonetheless, comes through for his friends. Episode plots are pretty straightforward (Ted signs up with matchmaking agency; Marshall takes a well-paying job he doesn't like; when Ted gets a girlfriend, Robin realizes she has feelings for him after all; and Lily has second thoughts about getting married), but the show maintains a nice balance of single-episodes stories and a season-long arc--and as you grown attached to the characters, even fairly routine stories are made to feel fresh. This is good comfort television: Smart but not snotty, earnest but not cloying, oddball without being forced or wacky. Check it out. --Bret Fetzer

This Show Is Steak Sauce! March 30, 2009 J. Wactor (Tucson, AZ) Why do I love this show? I want every character on this show to be my best friend (except Robin). They're funny, caring, and awesome. The actors truly have tons of chemistry, providing a quality show in a half-hour block. This is no generic sitcom. Sure, it's got a laugh track and some of the banter is cliche, however, most of it is incredibly witty and heartfelt. Ted is engaged in a genuine search for love, and I'm completely wrapped up in it. I fell in love with the Cake Girl (Victoria, played by Ashley Williams) and was sad to see her go (it's probably why I'm not a huge fan of Robin). This show has continuity and a compelling storyline; it simply amazes me. It's very quotable. I find myself quoting with friends I've talked into watching it (who get equally hooked). The cast is brilliant, as well as the director and writers. Bloc Party's song: `This Modern Love' at the close of Season One clenched it for me though, dramatically building up a powerful finale I won't soon forget. It joins the hall of fame for greatest season finale songs with the likes of The O.C's: Imogen Heap `Hide and Seek' and Grey's Anatomy's: Snow Patrol `Chasing Cars'. Hands down, this is the best sitcom I've ever seen. Buy it, watch it, love it. DISCLAIMER: Though the writers are good at what they do, don't listen to any of their commentaries. They are exceptionally boring, lackluster, and have slightly soured my enjoyment of the show. It's that bad.
I finally joined the "in" crowd! March 1, 2009 Theresa W (mi, usa) Finally, I gave it and gave this show a shot. While I've never been a Neil Patrick Harris fan, I was reluctant. However, wow, what an entertaining, funny, show! FRIENDS, how I miss you Rachel, Joey, Monica, Ross, Chandler, Phoebe...but look out, TV has a new version for Y2K. Season 1 has many memorable moments, and builds the basis for this show and the character background and development. I think it only took us two weeks to run through it, with quick half hour episodes this makes it a perfect sit back and relax show at the end of the evening, watching a few at a time. If you haven't caught this show, check it out!!
Very Funny, But Not A Lot Of Depth February 26, 2009 TEK (Lawrence, KS USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
My wife and I have a TV but don't get a broadcast signal, cable or satellite, so we don't see many new shows and only watch shows we get on DVD. My mother got us season one of "How I Met Your Mother" for Christmas. I watched the entire season in pretty short order and I think my first reaction, honestly, is that it surpassed my expectations. Of the little I see of "new" television I am never that impressed, but there are parts in almost every episode of this show that are simply hilarious. This show is also some good satirical content, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that is a central feature of the show. That being said, this show has some drawbacks. First, the acting is not very good. Josh Radnor and Cobie Smulders are particularly hard to watch, and there are times (though not as often as with the previous two) that the performances of Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel strike as amateur. Neil Patrick Harris is clearly the strongest acting presence on the show, and without that presence this show might not be worth watching at all. Second, there are serious writing problems on this show. I mean, enough already with the "perfect couple" who just can't seem to get together and when they do they can't seem to make their relationship work. And in this regard the main character Ted (played by Josh Radnor) is simply too whiny and Robin (played by Cobie Smulders) is entirely too flaky. The type of drama between these two was interesting when I was 13, but as manifested in the lives of people in their upper 20s it's just downright annoying at times. I also can't help but comment that this show perpetuates some of the worst parts of our culture. Practically, all the female characters on the show, ranging from the main characters to those in just a few or even one episode, have huge breasts that are always hanging out of their shirts. I suppose there's nothing objectionable about this to some, if not most, but it's a little shallow. Further, the show is basically about sex; in any event, there is a lot of sexual content. Along the same lines this show is completely casual about "hooking up," and it doesn't seem to cross anyone's mind that maybe the cause of disfunctional people and relationships is such shallow behavior and attitudes. And do these people do anything but drink, party, and have sex? I thought it interesting that at times the characters mocked people who have "grown up" and moved on to other things by cracking fun at how purportedly lame those people and activities were. And yet, it's not as if drinking, partying, and having sex all the time is particularly fulfilling to people. Of course, it's not fair to this show to be too critical; after all, it is a comedy and shouldn't be taken too seriously. I realize that most people have given this show high ratings. In fact, most if not all of the one-star ratings on this cite are by those who complain not about the show itself but about the formatting or other problems with the DVD release but who otherwise praise the show. While I do agree that this show is very funny at times, it's hardly ever "smart." All told, I wouldn't go so far as to discourage people from watching this show, but I can't really get myself to fully endorse it either. But I'm kind of an eclectic viewer, and most people seem to thoroughly enjoy this show. I give this show three stars; I'd give it three and a half if I had the option.
Surprisingly Hilarious February 22, 2009 Jessica Torres (Fresno, CA USA) My goodness, this was a pleasant surprise! I'll definitely be getting more seasons. This show is a constant source of belly laughs. It lures you in with standard yet engaging plot lines and then blind sides you with crazy funny jokes out of no where! Neil Patrick Harris is in his prime and steals the show entirely. By the second episode I didn't even mind the laugh track. I suggest if you enjoy silly and sometimes heartfelt entertainment, give How I Met Your Mother a shot.
excellent show! February 16, 2009 Barbara Krebs This is just about the best show on TV right now. It's amazing and hilarious. Always good for a great laugh!
