Out of Sight scored critical raves, but its title sums up the theatrical fate of Steven Soderbergh's coolly comic crime caper and misfit romance based on Elmore Leonard's novel. But this is the sort of buried treasure home video was created to rescue.

George Clooney comes into his own as a leading man in the role of inveterate bank robber Jack Foley. Incarcerated, he uses another inmate's prison break as a cover for his own escape. Waiting for him, according to plan, is his partner, Buddy (Ving Rhames). Also waiting for him, not according to plan, is federal agent Karen Sisco (the ravishing Jennifer Lopez). She finds herself disarmed in more ways than one when she is deposited in the getaway car's trunk with Jack. But that doesn't stop her from joining the task force created to capture him, while he plans "one last heist."

Out of Sight is a rich, entertaining film, stylish without being showy, faithful to the integrity of Leonard's potent dialogue and quirky characters, and seamlessly acted by a dream ensemble. Standouts include Albert Brooks as convicted insider trader Richard Ripley, who while in prison brags to the wrong people that he has $5 million in uncut diamonds hidden in his house; Don Cheadle as Maurice (don't call him "Snoopy") Miller, with whom Jack warily teams up to steal said diamonds; Dennis Farina as Karen's protective father (his idea of a birthday gift is a Sig-Hauer .38); and, in unbilled cameos, Michael Keaton, reprising his Jackie Brown role as FBI agent Ray Nicolet, and Samuel L. Jackson.

If you liked Get Shorty and Jackie Brown, you'll find this, well, Out of Sight. --Donald Liebenson

Out of Sight was one of the best movies of 1998, but ironically this superior crime comedy was a box-office disappointment. Fortunately the movie can enjoy a long life on home video, where it can be savored by anyone who missed its original release. Making his best film since 1989's sex, lies, and videotape, director Steven Soderbergh pays tribute to the signature wit and intricacy of Elmore Leonard's novel, brilliantly adapted by Scott Frank, the gifted screenwriter who previously adapted Leonard's Get Shorty. The movie's a prime showcase for the talent and chemistry of George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, respectively playing a career bank robber who's escaped from jail and the federal agent who falls for his charms while tracking him down. Soderbergh directs with confident visual flair, shifting time- lines (a la Pulp Fiction) to weave together subplots and maintain vivid focus on Leonard's splendid characters and smooth-as-silk dialogue. While the sexy repartee between Clooney and Lopez recalls the vintage interplay of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, Ving Rhames and Steve Zahn add ample comic relief as Clooney's accomplices. Dennis Farina is memorable as Lopez's father, and Albert Brooks is almost unrecognizable as a Wall Street crook whose mansion--and a cache of uncut diamonds--provides the setting for the film's climactic caper. As orchestrated by Soderbergh, the film offers a feast of plot twists and surprises, but it never loses track of its delightful characters and the clever wit that brings them so vividly to life. --Jeff Shannon

    The Bottom Line:

A smart, sexy, and well-directed thriller that races through its running length and ends perfectly, Out of Sight may be remembered now for relaunching Steven Soderbergh after years in the wilderness and being an important stepping stone in George Clooney's career, but it's an extremely entertaining film in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars All star cast & outstanding story.......   June 4, 2009

A great, great movie that I haven't thought about in ten years!

I own alot of DVDs and alot of old VHS tapes, I had "Out of Sight" buried at the bottom and decided to watch it for the second time ever (since I bought it (99').

Wow, was I surprised! The movie is excellent, the cast is a super star studded lineup like no other-

George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Steve Zahn, Don Cheadle, Ving Rhames, Samuel L. Jackson, Luis Guzman (Waiting), Catherine Keener (40 Year Old Virgin), Michael Keaton, Dennis Farina, Isiah Washington and Albert Brooks all star in "Out of Sight"!

    Great writing, great acting!

"Out of Sight" is based off the book written by Elmore Leonard, all the movies based off his books are good - "Killshot", "3:10 to Yuma", "Get Shorty" and "Be Cool"!

Enjoy this one, you won't be disappointed!

I liked it. Good combo of drama, light action, comedy and good acting primarily from supporting players.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie with Orginal Plot   February 15, 2009

I have been reading the negative reviews on this movie and feel like no one really understood what this movie was about. The love story between Jenifer Lopez and George Clooney is a big part of the movie, but the heist pulled off at the end of this movie is what draws you in and keeps you focused. The originality in the plot is something that has never been examined before, a love story between a federal marshall and a convict. A lot of the negative reviews have been ripping Clooney's acting, but his cool delivery makes you believe he can pull off whatever he wants. The struggle between good and evil and the fine line between them is also examined. Director Steven Sodebergh briallantly delivers a story that keeps you guessing all the way to the end what might happen. Something that I have not seen in the previous reviews is the performances of Don Cheadle and Steve Zahn, each bring a compelling element to the movie and make the story whole and very entertaining. The final robbery at the end is set up wonderfully and brings some closure to the movie. One last note, I thought the addition of Samuel L. Jackson at the end of the movie was a wonderful touch. In summary, disregard all the negative reviews as this is an excellently crafted movie and will keep your interest all the way through

5 out of 5 stars My favorite movie   November 6, 2008

I love love love this movie. I saw it when it first came to video and I have watched it many times. This is perhaps the only instance where I prefer the movie to the book. The cast is magnificent. George and Jennifer have great chemistry and make their rather improbable romance seem somewhat plausible. Both characters are sexy, quirky, smart, flawed. This was the first time that I saw Catherine Keener, Don Cheadle and Steve Zahn in a movie. Nowadays they are some of my favorite actors and I always look out for their films. There are many other talented and well known actors in the film, and they blend in to make a great ensemble cast. Since seeing this movie I have always made a point of watching Soderbergh's films, however some are a bit too out there for me.

There are many other reasons why I enjoy this movie. The story itself is rather simple; guy (George) breaks out of jail with help of a friend, meets girl (Jennifer), obsesses about girl (whom is a federal marshal trying to arrest him), meets up with criminals he met in jail, robs another guy he met in jail. However, the script is amazing, with interesting characters, great dialogue and interesting stories behind the characters. The flashback story-telling works well, and keeps the story moving along at a great pace. It also keeps you guessing. Some people that I have watched it with have complained that it is confusing. The music is good. Many locations are used, and each has their own theme and color palette, making the movie very interesting visually.

There is a great documentary on the making of the film; it's one of the best I've seen. It has in-depth discussions about many aspects of the film making process and it is fascinating to see how much thought goes into seemingly little details (e.g. the color of the prison jumpsuits).
