Product Description Movie DVD
Amazon.com The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is a prequel to the recent remake of Tobe Hooper's classic 1974 splatter film, with an emphasis on the vogue for torture and bottomless depravity that characterize contemporary horror. As one might expect, The Beginning is just that, an origins tale about the Hewitt family of backwoods Texas. Step by step, we discover the source of their taste for human flesh, penchant for snaring young people passing through, and, most of all, how young Leatherface (Andrew Bryniarski) came to choose his favorite power tool and wear a mask made of someone else's flesh. R. Lee Ermey is very effective in his perverse authority figure mode as Hoyt, the lawman who earned his badge through unorthodox means and now supplies specialized food to the Lone Star cannibals. Much less interesting than Hooper's two Massacre films, The Beginning (on which Hooper has a production credit) is not so much a tribute to the films he directed but a more sadistic continuation of the franchise. --Tom Keogh

Surprisingly good movie...better than the 2003 remake June 22, 2009 Bobandy (Sunnyvale Trailer Park) I'd heard all the negative reviews, but figured: "What the hell, I'll see it anyway." I have a high tolerance for bad movies, so I thought I'd give it a shot and I was pleasantly surprised. The feeling of the hot Texas sun, the forced confinement at the hands of a bunch of crazies, and the utter fear of being at the mercy of a psychotic guy armed with a chainsaw is strakly portrayed here with unnerving skill. Leatherface is more of a person in this one than in the '03 remake. He's less of a monster and even somewhat sympathetic as in the original from '73. But he's not played for laughs at all in this movie. In fact, there aren't very many laughs at all. All the actors are very good at portraying the victims and the crazies. We see how Old Monty "lost" his legs, how "the sherriff" came to be, and how Leatherface gets his chainsaw. Sure, it could be argued that not knowing all these things is half the fun, but this film is still good for what it is. It's a squirm-inducing examination of the loony Hewitt family and is just realistic enough to make the whole thing scary and uncomfortable at times. And that's just what a horror movie should be! recommended for fans of Leatherface and all things Chainsaw. For others...well...you could probably skip it and still be quite happy in life.
Delivers the goods March 24, 2009 S. M. Barden (Leesburg, VA) This is probably the only horror movie in the last 25 years that really made me want to look away from the screen. Since that's exactly what you're looking for in this type of film, I'd say this one really delivers the goods. It's vastly superior, IMO, to all of the previous installments in the series, including the original, which only hinted at what this one makes us experience. The performances are, without exception, outstanding. Of course, R. Lee Ermey gives his typically brilliant performance, but everyone else is believable and real as well. There's something very cathartic about getting your pulse up during an over-the-top horror film; maybe it's one way of dealing with the ultimate truth of our mortality and deepest fears. If you like extreme horror, you need to see this movie. It will stay with you long after the final credits.
An Awesome Beginning!!! February 17, 2009 PUMPKIN MAN I love prequels because you get to see how it all started! This is an awesome prequel because you see how Leatherface was born, you see how he gets his chainsaw, how he started wearing other people's faces, and more. I love the gore scenes. Two brothers, Eric and Dean are going to fight in the Vietnam war, but Dean is reluctant and wants to stay with his smokin' hot girlfriend. They run into trouble with Sheriff Hoyt and must deal with Leatherface! If you love prequels, horror, gore, and Leatherface, you'll love THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING!!! p.s. Happy Presidents Day!
Bloodier than the first January 26, 2009 E. Harden This is how it all began. I liked the first film and thought that if they did do another then it could not get any bloodier. I was wrong. this one is scarier and bloodier and i loved every minute of it.
2 stars out of 4 January 25, 2009 One-Line Film Reviews (Ann Arbor) The Bottom Line: The best thing that can be said about "The Beginning" is that it's markedly better than its predecessor; that being said, it's a gory freakshow that will only really appeal to devotees of horror or this franchise.
