Product Description Bluray Disc
Amazon.com essential video Martin Scorsese's 1990 masterpiece GoodFellas immortalizes the hilarious, horrifying life of actual gangster Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), from his teen years on the streets of New York to his anonymous exile under the Witness Protection Program. The director's kinetic style is perfect for recounting Hill's ruthless rise to power in the 1950s as well as his drugged-out fall in the late 1970s; in fact, no one has ever rendered the mental dislocation of cocaine better than Scorsese. Scorsese uses period music perfectly, not just to summon a particular time but to set a precise mood. GoodFellas is at least as good as The Godfather without being in the least derivative of it. Joe Pesci's psycho improvisation of Mobster Tommy DeVito ignited Pesci as a star, Lorraine Bracco scores the performance of her life as Hill's love interest, and every supporting role, from Paul Sorvino to Robert De Niro, is a miracle.

Cannot be campared to "Godfathers I & II" June 24, 2009 JAG 1 (New England) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
As gangster movies go, "Goodfellas" is quite popular. Albeit, it does not compare to the greatest of all gangster films being "Godfather 1" and "Godfather 2". In "Godfather 1" and "Godfather 2", I felt warmth for the characters involved. Clemenza and Tessio reminded me of any two great-uncles I could have had on the Italian side of my family. I really felt for Mike in "Godfather 1 & 2" as a man who didn't want to go down the road of crime. In short-I liked the characters in the first two Godfather movies. In contrast, I found almost every character in "Goodfellas" to be a foul-mouthed, filthy, dirty, drug-dealing, a-hole. They weren't people who made me want to be interested in what happened to them. I guess, I did like the old lady who played Joe Pesci's mother-she reminded me very much of the old Italian ladies I grew up around. "Goodfellas" gets three stars for action, suspense and good acting, but ultimately does not reach the status of "classic" gangster movie. While the first two "Godfather" movies could rely upon the characters themselves to deliver meaningful dialogue (take for example, Mike and his father's heart-to-heart talk in the back yard), "Goodfellas" relied upon pseudo-dramatic narrations and video-like sequences played out to the oldies. I wouldn't pay any more for it than you would spend renting it.
Classic May 9, 2009 Kevin Craig (ATL.) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Really great movie. Considered one of the greatest in Cinema history. Some rate this over The godfather's as the greatest mob movie. Fast moving and gripping. This really shows De Niro as one of the greatest actors in our generation. Oddly enough, after the first viewing I didn't realize his character was actually him. Some pretty good life lessons in the movie also. Must own for guys!
Good for its time May 4, 2009 Richard Mowbray (DC) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Goodfellows got alot of attention when it came out. I think Miller's Crossing and Casino were alot better.
Good Film But Not So Great DVD Version! April 22, 2009 Frederick Baptist (Singapore) This film is certainly one of Scorcese's best although to say it matches the calibre of Coppola's work on "The Godfather I &/or II" would be stretching it. It's a good film though that's based on a true story and succeeds admirably in portraying a no-holds-barred story of what life in the mafia is like and is like a good adjunct to the whole "Godfather" franchise. This dvd version though isn't perfect as although the sound quality is good and sounded like it was a Dolby 5.1 Surround setup on my system but the picture quality hasn't been restored leaving a lot of frames with those irritating white spots. I note that a Blu-ray version has been released and so here's hoping they took the opportunity to clean up the picture quality a little bit more. No special features of note here as well but overall, if you don't mind the few picture imperfections and if you are not into the making-of documentaries or cast interviews then this dvd version should suffice. My recommendation though is to get the Blu-ray version but if you need to get the standard version, this dvd will do if you can do without the extras.
Just a great movie all the way around. No spoilers. April 17, 2009 Michael Smith (Dallas, TX) Come on really. If you don't know already this movie is a classic. Buy it now. Stop reading.
