Amazon.com You don't have to be a munchie-loving stoner or an aspiring rock god to enjoy Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, but it helps. A dozen years after they introduced their mock-rock power duo on the Los Angeles club scene, Jack Black and Kyle Gass finally got the movie showcase (a partial spinoff from the D's short-lived HBO series) their fans had been waiting for, and it's a rockin' romp with plenty of crude laughs that will hit home for anyone who's ever played air guitar to Meat Loaf's "Bat out of Hell." It's a Beavis and Butt-head-like origin story, recalling the legend (ahem) of how JB (Black) and KG (Gass) met, bonded over bong-hits and rock-operatic guitar licks, then set out (on a tip from a crazed guitar-store clerk played by Ben Stiller) to find the mythic pick of destiny, used by all guitar gods and said to be fashioned from the tooth of Satan. Their quest includes a variety of well-cast cameos (including Tim Robbins, Meat Loaf, and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl as Satan himself), and there's plenty of flatulence, drug humor, at least one hilarious fantasy sequence, and outrageous sight gags too numerous to mention. Suffice it to say, it's about 90 minutes of lowbrow indulgence, and some of the jokes fall flat, but if you're a headbanger at heart, you'll know what Tenacious D is riffing on, and the sweet licks (also available on the soundtrack CD) will sound that much sweeter. If you're not ready to RAWK, this potential cult favorite may not be for you... but give it try anyway. It may not be better than Citizen Kane, but if you're properly stoked, it comes close to rock & roll heaven. --Jeff Shannon

Be FUNNY!!! January 18, 2010 Surferofromantica (Singapore) I watched this film last year over the Christmas break and remember being underwhelmed. These guys are funny, and they have a rock `n' roll attitude, why is it that they can't make a movie on their own that is better than "School of Rock"? Outside of a few good lines ("Your training begins tomorrow at the crack of noon!" "Patience, young Grass-smoker." "I've had this birthmark since I was born.") and a few good bits (the spread-legs guitar that Kyle plays is pretty absurd), there's not too much there. Okay, Dave Grohl is pretty hilarious as the Devil, and Tim Robbins as the Mysterious/Weird Stranger is okay too, but otherwise - yawwwwwwwwnnnn...
Hilarious January 13, 2010 Cerebellum Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny is a hilarious movie that most anyone will enjoy. It is not a life changing film, in fact, there is nothing deep about it. But it is a light movie that will fill an hour and a half of your time, and reduce some stress. The music in it is fantastic, and the lyrics are hilarious. There are nonstop laughs throughout. It is rated R for a reason, there is a lot of vulgar language and crude humor throughout. So while no kid should watch it, most fans of the D will have a lot of fun watching it. So, don't expect anything spectacular, but this light movie is a great escape from all the crap you put up with on a daily basis. A very enjoyable movie, filled with laughs and great tenacious music, if you get into Tenacious D, you should own this great movie.
Nonstop Fun! November 6, 2009 D. Mikels (Skunk Holler) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
TENACIOUS D IN THE PICK OF DESTINY is the lamest movie I've ever seen. It's silly, nonsensical, perverse, disjointed, and features two rolly polly stars (Jack Black and Kyle Gass) who would look more at ease receiving wedgies in the locker room than being phenom rock stars. Black is over the top and Gass looks like a brigadier general at Nerd Central; the subtle sensual repartee between the two is really, really gross. But you know what? I love this movie, as I do all things irreverent that never, ever, take themselves seriously.
In their quest to become a rock 'n roll legend, JB (Black) and KG (Gass) must obtain the Pick of Destiny (one of Lucifer's long lost tooths); their journey is augmented by drugs and crime and foolish banter and interesting characters (including Meat Loaf and Ben Stiller) and lots and lots of music. And these guys can strum and Black has some serious vocal range; their musical numbers are a combination of kick arse acoustics and outrageous slapstick that had me grinning from ear lobe to ear lobe. Nothing in Tenacious D's repertoire is sacred or respected; everything is out in the open to be made fun of, especially Black and Gass in fantastic self-deprecation. TENACIOUS D IN THE PICK OF DESTINY is dumber than a sack of rocks. . .and I enjoyed every tongue-in-cheek second of it. Rock on!

AWESOME! October 17, 2009 cobias (hell) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First off....i have to say that the first time i saw this movie was durring the worst time ive ever had in my life. This movie was the first little bit of lite i had durring the whole ordeal. Its hard to explain but i was in absolute hell and this movie lifted my spirits enough to make me realize life will go on and get better. For that i will be forever greatfull to JB/KG. I saw it the first time in nov 2007 on DVD.
For all the people that give it a bad review.....if you are not a musician or have not played in bands with any consistancy....you wont get it. Well, if your a real music fan you might. All i can say is this is an amazing rock musical from start to finish. You just have to watch it....its AMAZING! The first scene to the song "kickapoo" was just WOW! Meatloaf, DIO, that kid....they nailed it. I could watch the.....its just amazing. Even though its funny it has kind of a cool dark mythic side of it. The part where Ben Stiller is telling kg/jb the legend of the pick is just AMAZING.Its funny but entrancing at the same time.
The only bad part(and it is a major screw up) is the fact that the "master exploder" performance is in the middle of the film???? WHY?! It should have been made to fit in at the end....as the final climax after they beat the....well, i wont give it away. I seriously think they should rewrite it and re-release it. Even in theaters.Even with that major flaw it is a TRUE masterpiece of a rock musical. And i HATE musicals. They need to do a rewrite and re-release and/or a sequal. I LOVE THIS MOVIE! And it had a part in saving my life in rough times. Thank you Jack Black and Kyle Gass!!!
Feel good stoner rock comedy September 12, 2009 Adam Jeffries (brooks, ky) If you own the audio cds you'll love the movie. its better than inward singing.
