This movie is not for everybody. I shudder to think what some poor soul who liked Jack Black in "The Holiday" would think if they rented this one and popped it in. This is for one, and only one, group of people. The small, rabid, dedicated fans of Jack Black & Kyle Gass as...Tenacious D.
And this version comes with a BONUS DVD, which I shall speak about shortly. For now, let's just discuss the film.
The titular Pick of Destiny is a guitar pick, made centuries ago, out of the tooth of Satan himself. Since then it has been seen in the hands of Angus Young, Jimmy Page, and many more, thus giving them their amazing guitar-shredding abilities. The only way that JB and KG can pay the rent would be to win the talent contest, and the only way to do that would be to play the greatest song ever written...with the pick.
Ben Stiller informs them that the pick is under high security in the Rock N' Roll history museum, and Tim Robbins tells them about the laser grid guarding it. Undaunted, our heroes still quest after the pick...even when Dave Grohl as Satan himself comes to reclaim what is his.
There's a ton of drug use, so make sure your kids don't see this. Heck, the very first sequence before the the movie even begins is a cartoon about farts and smoking! Just so you know what kind of film you're buying here.
I loved this film, and my friends loved this film. This is a party movie. Maximum fun will be had if you watch this with at least one other person. Even better if you're fans of that magical artform known as Heavy Metal. I have seen it three times now, and yesterday I gave away my old copy so I could upgrade to this 2 disc set.
Now, for the record, before you go and spend oodles and oodles of money, I purchased the 2 disc version for the exact same price as the single disc version. So don't go and do anything silly, and be short on rent money like KG and JB were....
The second disc is at least an hour long (I'm not done watching it) and contains 17 extended and deleted scenes. You get a slightly longer version of the Neil Hamburger scene, and a lot of alternate takes where Jack and Kyle crack up, mess up, etc. There's a lot more Tim Robbins, and a bit with some extra Ben Stiller as well.
Best of all is the "Hell O'Clock News" segments. These were originally web-shorts that were done to promote the making of the film (in hell, apparently). Each one features Jack, Kyle, or director Liam Lynch, in funny (rediculous!) skits. Extremely funny stuff. Very watchable, and more importantly, re-watchable. My friends had a blast with this stuff.
Needless to say, I don't feel bad about buying the single disc version and then upgrading to this 2 DVD set. Of course, as I said earlier, when I found the 2 DVD set, it was the exact same price as the single disc, which found a happy new home with a friend of mine. If you're a diehard Jack Black & Kyle Gass fan (and I know there are quite a few out there, regardless of how this film did at the box office) then I assure you that buying the 2 DVD version is your wisest course of action.
