Product Description From visionary writer/director Guillermo del Toro (director of Blade II, The Devil's Backbone) comes Hellboy, a supernatural action adventure based on Mike Mignola's popular Dark Horse Comics series of the same name.Born in the flames of hell and brought to Earth as an infant to perpetrate evil, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) was rescued from sinister forces by the benevolent Dr. Broom (John Hurt), who raised him to be a hero.In Dr. Broom's secret Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, Hellboy creates an unlikely family consisting of the telepathic "Mer-Man" Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), the woman he loves who can control fire.Hidden from the very society that theyprotect, they stand as the key line of defense against an evil madman who seeks to reclaim Hellboy to the dark side and use his powers to destroy mankind.Cast and CrewStars: Selma Blair, John Hurt, Ron Perlman, Karel Roden, Jeffrey TamborDirector: Guillermo Del ToroProducer: Lawrence Gordon, Lloyd Levin, Mike Richardson
Amazon.com In the ongoing deluge of comic-book adaptations, Hellboy ranks well above average. Having turned down an offer to helm Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in favor of bringing Hellboy's origin story to the big screen, the gifted Mexican director Guillermo del Toro compensates for the excesses of Blade II with a moodily effective, consistently entertaining action-packed fantasy, beginning in 1944 when the mad monk Rasputin--in cahoots with occult-buff Hitler and his Nazi thugs--opens a transdimensional portal through which a baby demon emerges, capable of destroying the world with his powers. Instead, the aptly named Hellboy is raised by the benevolent Prof. Bloom, founder of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, whose allied forces enlist the adult Hellboy (Ron Perlman, perfectly cast) to battle evil at every turn. While nursing a melancholy love for the comely firestarter Liz (Selma Blair), Hellboy files his demonic horns ("to fit in," says Bloom) and wreaks havoc on the bad guys. The action is occasionally routine (the movie suffers when compared to the similar X-Men blockbusters), but del Toro and Perlman have honored Mike Mignola's original Dark Horse comics with a lavish and loyal interpretation, retaining the amusing and sympathetic quirks of character that made the comic-book Hellboy a pop-culture original. He's red as a lobster, puffs stogies like Groucho Marx, and fights the good fight with a kind but troubled heart. What's not to like? --Jeff Shannon

The Near Perfect Mix Between Sci-Fi and Fantasy January 27, 2010 Tyler S. (Brentwood, CA United States) Hellboy is such a nontraditional anti-genre movie, and because of that it plays like a breath of fresh air. Guillermo is such a unique director, and admire all of his films because he does not play into the hollywood style of action films. Hellboy 1 is the beggining of a pontentially successful franchise, and while this film has its flaws, the crew improved on those exponentially in the sequel "The Golden Army".
Hellboy on its Directors Cut Blu-ray release is very welcome to my collection. The disc is jam-packed with special features, which I love, and thankfully a few of those features go into the comic lore and history. I think every comic book movie should take time and explore the roots within the comics in a commentary or interview segment. Del Toro feels he has an obligation to give the fans a lot of special features to view, and I admire that greatly.
Now I wont give away the film's plot. I will say though that it is a many great things. It is a great Sci-Fi movie. It's a great Fantasy movie. I'ts an awesome action/comedy film. And lastly it is a lot of what you have never seen before. Colors, lighting, style all have a unique appearance in Hellboy. Hellboy is fun to watch and listen to everytime. It's lower budget affected some aspects of the film, but Guillermo really knew how to manage the film with that low budget. He made a monster movie with more heart than some heart-driven films. Hellboy breaks the comic-book-movie stereotype and shows theres a lot more great films to come out that will be adapted from graphic novels.
Terrific film. December 10, 2009 D. Stokes (philly) Great PQ & AQ. Looks great on a 1080P plasma in a very dark room. Crank up the volume and feel the sound.
Hellboy Movie. November 9, 2009 Jose Lopez (Miami,Florida USA) Was able to see the movie a while back. Pretty good, I don't follow this character much so I am not a huge fan, but I like the movie. and I never heard of him til' now, Of course I wish hollywood wouldn't ruin comic books by making a movie out of every one of them! Good movie, good special effects and action.
Like action? Like Comics? Like Blu Ray? You'll like Hellboy! September 21, 2009 JahSoulsSun (Lindenwold, NJ) I'm a action fan, and I love comics and comic movies. Hellboy is a great action comic movie in my opinion. Awesome special effects and cinemetogrophy (bad spelling). The plot is somewhat shallow, but there is a very cool villian and a good supporting cast helping Hellboy along the way. If it had a better plot, I'd probably give it 5 stars.
The BluRay Transfer is great! Looks and sounds amazing on a 1080P TV. Better transfer than a lot of the others.
america's critic September 11, 2009 David R. Lingard (memphis tn) hellboy was great straight outta the comic cool and neat effects hellboy was action packed and will be great on blu ray get this movie if u dont have it yet!!
