Product Description Spiraling into a dark obsession with the number 23, Walter Sparrow twists his once idyllic life into an inferno of psychological torture that could possibly lead to his death as well as the deaths of his loved ones. Spurred on by a mysterious novel, The Number 23, that he doesn't dare put down, Walter is forced to unlock the secrets of his past before he can continue his future with his wife, Agatha, and teenage son, Robin. The novel, given to Walter by Agatha as a birthday gift, depicts a chilling murder mystery that seems to mirror Walter's life in dark and uncontrollable ways. The life of the book's main character, a brooding detective named Fingerling, is filled with moments that echo Walter's own history. As the world of the book starts to come alive, Walter becomes infected by the most frightening and evocative part of it: Fingerling's obsession with the hidden power of the number 23. This obsession permeates the book and begins to control Walter. He sees the number everywhere in his own life and becomes convinced that he is damned to commit the same horrific crime as Fingerling--murder. Nightmarish fantasies come to haunt Walter, ones that portend terrible fates for his wife as well as family friend Isaac French, placing him on a desperate quest to understand the mysteries of the book. If he can unlock the power behind the number 23, he may be able to change his future.
Amazon.com Jim Carrey as a schizophrenic murderer isn't convincing, in this melodramatic film about a man obsessed by the Number 23. Joel Schumacher (Batman Forever, St. Elmo's Fire) has unintentionally managed to make a comedy of horrors that really is quite humorous in parts. Walter Sparrow (Carrey) becomes engrossed in a homespun novel about Detective Fingerling, whose life degrades into mayhem because of his obsession with 23's esoteric numerical puzzles. Sparrow's preoccupation with the book follows his botched attempt to catch a nasty dog that bites him, leading one to believe that Sparrow's contraction of rabies might be the cause for his mental degradation. As the story progresses, Sparrow retreats further into Fingerling's world, rife with suicidal sexpots and hardboiled detective sleuthing. His wife, Agatha (Virginia Madsen), also plays Fingerling's girlfriend, sex-crazed Fabrizia, who taunts Fingerling until he stabs her. Back in reality, Walter aims to solve the unresolved crimes in the book, taking it as a murderer's diary rather than as an imagined work. The story is half-baked, though Carrey's portrayal of a mentally disturbed person is what makes The Number 23 comedic. Long, contemplative stares, and over-dramatized acting renders Sparrow a cliched character, rather than one odd enough to engage viewers. For a better version of almost the exact plot but with a terrorist's twist, see Thr3e instead. --Trinie Dalton

Dull, plodding, clumbsy psycho-drama May 8, 2009 G. E. Williams (California) We got this the week it came out, my wife said it was so bad she didn't want to watch it again, which is unusual for her. I didn't give in until today. I could have waited another few years and it wouldn't have helped. The only good thing about this film was the song that played during the closing credits. Trust me... there are better ways to spend your time 1 1/2 *
Jim Carrey's career might be over. April 24, 2009 Emilio Castro Why would Jim Carrey ever try to do a serious film? He's basically a clown. Now he's too old to be funny and he knows that so he's trying to take more serious roles, but what a mess he's making! The acting in this movie is absolutely weird. The plot is EXCRUCIATINGLY BORING and the first 40 mins feel like 3 HOURS! This movie left me thinking: "What could save Jim's career?!"
Ignore the Negative Press - this Movie is Worth Your Attention March 29, 2009 Commish What a great movie. I agree with most reviews that telling the story took longer than needed, and perhaps, it may have been more confusing than it needn't be, but if you went for the ride, the ending brought everything together like zipping up an overstuffed duffle bag. I really enjoyed Jim Carrey's perfomance as he doesn't get many opportunities to expand his portfolio beyond so much in the way of silly comedy (which I also enjoy immensely). As he - and his audience - mature, I believe he will be using his talents more in a dramatic means to explore his skill as an actor. Though "23" isn't the one to put him on top, it can certainly be perceived as a worthy stepping stone. Give it a chance. The actresses are absolutely beautiful and believable in their roles (especially Lynne Collins, although I wish she had more film time) and though the plot requires more than average concentration, the rewards of a well-acted and creatively filmed movie will make these two hours worth while.
Number 23 - Have not received March 11, 2009 Rhio Moeller (Fernley, NV) Order 105-4049277-4150607 - The movie Number 23 I have not received this movie as of yet - 3/11. I contacted the seller Kelly Dugally at kellie@norampartners.com on 2/24/9 and she assured me the movie shipped on 2/9 and "could take up to 21 business days or longer to arrive". I'm not sure how much LONGER she wants me to wait. I ordered three movies that day and the other two movies arrived the week of 2/9/09. I am very disappointed and plan on reviewing the seller/shipper in the future to make sure what I am ordering is NOT from NorAm International Partners, INC. Above I was made to RATE THIS ITEM and it would not let me leave it blank. I had to mark one star to complete this review. That is upsetting since I would rate this transaction a zero! #23 & The Meaning Of It February 21, 2009 Damon Smith (USA) What I learned from this movie Is that 23 is like an empty chapter of your life. It lets you have a choice about how your feature is going to be. Or 'Hows it going to end?' Remember there are only 22 chapters in the book of revelations. Maybe #23 isin't there for a reason? Maybe we all have different choices that defines us as who we are. Yes, its all about the choices we make. How can there be a man or woman that is born to do only one thing for a purpose? That will make life a little boring won't it? Now, I'm not a religous person, infact I am not religous at all or I don't believe in a God. I got my own personal reasons why do not. But this movie was just explaining that there is no such thing as destiny. Only different choices. For example, its all up to us to decide how to make the feature. Do we want these terrible disasters to happen that might destroy our Planet one day or do we want to prevent it from happening? The choice is up to you. Don't you think that people have a choice about how they want to live they're lives? I do. But it leads to more questions. Is there really such thing as Good and Evil or is it just different choices? I think theres only different choices. The Number 23 is about a man name Walter who becomes upsess with a book called "The Number 23" that was given to him by his wife. He becomes addicted to the book because it is immitating his life. Walter thinks there is something more to the book, or he thinks there could be a murder case involved but he only finds out it was himself that killed his old girlfriend, Loura and that he was the one who wrote the book all along. Making Walter more insane, panicy, and confused. It finally gets to him, than he realizes its just a number and that there are only different choices and no such thing as destiny. Time has changed to protect the innocent and the guilty. Walter was a sick person who became well. Now he was sentence to prison for a few weeks. Some choices are easy, and some choices are not. Those are the really important ones that defines us as human. But numbers are just a counting system, with meaning attached to them. Isin't it? The choice is for you to decide. This was a really great film. But I cannot understand why so many people hated this movie. The narration was excellent, the storyline was great. A few funny parts in the movie mainly because its Jim Carrey. JC is one of my favorite actors. But I guess this movie is obveiously not for everyone. No one can be satisfied, so what can you say? Making a perfect movie is impossible. So what were you expecting in this movie? You wanted it to be a really great film but you were disappointed? I didn't see nothing wrong with the acting. Jim Carrey and the other actors did great, but not perfect I will admit. Although I think Jim Carrey did great all the way threw. I dont care how anyone feels. I enjoyed this movie.
