Setting out for the one last catch that will make up for a lackluster fishing season, Captain Billy Tyne (George Clooney) pushes his boat the Andrea Gail out to the waters of the Flemish Cap off Nova Scotia for what will be a huge swordfish haul. While his crew is gathering fish, three storm fronts (including a hurricane) collide to create a "perfect storm" of colossal force, and Billy's path back to Gloucester, Massachusetts, takes them right smack into the middle of it. Wolfgang Petersen's adaptation of Sebastian Junger's seafaring bestseller is a faithful if by-the-numbers true-story account of a monster storm that rocked New England in 1991, specifically Tyne's commercial fishing boat and its crew. Junger's tale fashioned a compelling if staid narrative out of seemingly disparate events, but this film adaptation tends to flatten out the story into a conventional if absorbing story of man vs. nature, as the crew fights for survival against the awesome waves the storm kicks up. The central part of the film, which cuts between the Andrea Gail's fight to stay afloat and the attempts of the Coast Guard to rescue a yacht in peril, is suspenseful action of the first degree, aided by some awesome computer-generated waves.

Still, it's a long way to that action, with an extended first act that consists mainly of stoic men, crying women, and a fair amount of "don't go out into the sea" dialogue--in other words, a compelling story has been shoehorned into standard summer movie fare. It's too bad, as Peterson assembled an excellent cast--including Mark Wahlberg, Diane Lane, John C. Reilly, and William Fichtner among them--but seems to opt for only a surface exploration of these characters, though Clooney seems to have a touch of Captain Ahab in him. You may still be won over by the movie, but for a more in-depth portrait, go to Junger's book for the missing details. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Storm   February 7, 2010

I bought this for my grandson (age 9) who LOVES action! It was good except I didn't realize the ending was not so good. But it shipped in good time and excellent condition.

    5 out of 5 stars Hailey's five star review   February 5, 2010
I am twelve years old and I have seen plenty of movies. One of my favorites is "The Perfect Storm". I would rate it five stars! It's about this man "Ben" and his buddies. They go on a fishing trip to get some money. They got asked on one a little more dangerous than he thought. He had a wife named Kristina. He figured they could they could use the money.
They were going to a spot out on the coast. Everybody thought it was too dangerous. Ben was different from everybody. He said, "It couldn't be that bad there's a butt load of fish down there!" On the way wasn't that bad, it was actually good. One night they figured they would stop and try to catch some fish. They caught a shark, and when they thought it was dead when they put it on the boat. Then all of a sudden it bit Ben right on the knee cap!!
His buddies helped him and then he was okay.
The day they were supposed to be arriving there was a perfect storm. They were praying for them to make it out alive. There was this huge wave! They didn't make it out alive , but his heart will always be in the sea.

4 out of 5 stars Caomments on THE PERFECT STORM   January 31, 2010

From an actual happening. Every year some Gloucester fishermen are lost to Atlantic storms. The movie lets you get to know some of the men on the ill-fated vessel. The storm effects are horrific.

1 out of 5 stars Intensity of storm perfect analogy to stupidity of director, scriptwriter, composer   January 7, 2010

The Perfect Storm, in which an unusually dense bunch of commercial fishermen do everything they can to put themselves in mortal danger and almost nothing to save themselves from it. Perhaps meant as homage to the brave men & women of the New England fishing industry and their traditions, instead stands as an insult, depicting them as dolts who know nothing of their vocation or how to navigate its risks, i.e., listen to the weather radio, wear life jackets, secure themselves to the deck when up top during a storm, heed gut feelings, etc.

    *Spoiler Alert*

Don't mind films where nature conquers hero, or hero outwits fate, but when dummy dies of dumbness (masquerading as heroism) - not very inspiring or thought-provoking; could be hilarious if that's your sense of humour though.

Excellent special effects, best watched with sound off, as bloated, maudlin, inappropriate soundtrack may make you want to tear your ears from your head.
