Product Description Movie DVD
Amazon.com essential video When this popular prison drama was released in 1994, some critics complained that the movie was too long (142 minutes) to sustain its story. Those complaints miss the point, because the passage of time is crucial to this story about patience, the squeaky wheels of justice, and the growth of a life-long friendship. Only when the film reaches its final, emotionally satisfying scene do you fully understand why writer-director Frank Darabont (adapting a novella by Stephen King) allows the story to unfold at its necessary pace, and the effect is dramatically rewarding. Tim Robbins plays a banker named Andy who's sent to Shawshank Prison on a murder charge, but as he gets to know a life-term prisoner named Red (Morgan Freeman), we realize there's reason to believe the banker's crime was justifiable. We also realize that Andy's calm, quiet exterior hides a great reserve of patience and fortitude, and Red comes to admire this mild-mannered man who first struck him as weak and unfit for prison life. So it is that The Shawshank Redemption builds considerable impact as a prison drama that defies the conventions of the genre (violence, brutality, riots) to illustrate its theme of faith, friendship, and survival. Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Actor, and Screenplay, it's a remarkable film that signaled the arrival of a promising new filmmaker--a film that many movie lovers count among their all-time favorites. --Jeff Shannon

Great Movie June 26, 2009 Diane Martindale (Blythe, Ca. USA) This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. A true story that's a must see movie.

this is an interesting film that i have watched many times and i will without being bored.the shawshank redemption shows us the importance of HOPE and it is a serious work i think; however there are a little more goofs in it.but it is okey.
Shawshank Redemption June 20, 2009 Veta U. Nakai (USA) What a wonderful movie this is! I watch it every time it's aired on TV. The story and actors were all perfect for the roles they played. I'm happy that I finally own a copy of this great movie. Thank you.
Excellent in time and at the Prison site. June 17, 2009 Amy J. Smith I thought it was one of those movies that keep you on your feet. Everytime something happened your were either on your seat or standing on your feet. One of those movies that you just could not stand to miss any of it. It was really done well for all those people that played in this movie. Great Job to everyone. Even the Directors very well done.
"Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies". June 14, 2009 Dave Duy Le Shawshank Redemption, the best movie I have seen and will always be. Words cannot describe what I have just seen because it is simply too powerful. The movie is about two men who met in prison. That is as far as I can say because I do not want to waste the elegance of this movie on a stupid summary for you, so see it for yourself. After some research, it's a wonder to why this movie had not won any awards and Forrest Gump was the one to win it all back in 1994, especially when Shawshank Redemption is by no contest and by far better in every aspect. I avoided this film all these years after numerously hearing it was good, simply because the title and front cover of the movie looked boring. Shawshank Redemption was opposite of that, I do not believe I will ever find another movie as beautiful as this, that is why I say it is the best movie that I have seen ever. I normally do not say something is the best ever because I will always experience new things and something will always surpass one thing. Impressed beyond my ability to describe the film, Shawshank Redemption is one thing that cannot be surpassed. The connection that I felt between the characters were strong and powerful. The one thing this movie shows and talk about is hope, it reminds me of a video I made for my multimedia class back in high school. The video's message was about hope and contains a poem about it. I have seen plenty of grade A movies, The Godfather, Goodfellas, American History X, Cidade De Deus, Pulp Fiction, etc. But nothing I have seen has come near to holding up it's beauty when in comparison with Shawshank Redemption. Maybe it's just me, maybe I have some personal attachment to the movie that others may not have. But it's hard to believe so because I know a good movie when I see a good movie. Once again, if you have not seen this, it is highly recommended and it is the number one movie that I recommend to watch before you die. The sooner you see it, the better. I've seen many people wrote Shawshank Redemption is highly overrated and is just another good movie. I can not find another way to disagree more, Shawshank Redemption is a superb movie that tells a unforgettable story of friendship, struggle, and hope. One of the few movies to cry to after seeing, it is too beautifully made and you know that no movie will ever be the same again. "Get busy living, or get busy dying". "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies".
