Coming after The Silence of the Lambs and Seven, this thriller about a collaboration between two serial killers feels like a pale attempt to cash in on the success of those earlier, better films. That's a pity, because this film certainly has its strengths--particularly in the central performances of Morgan Freeman as a forensic detective and Ashley Judd as a would-be victim who escaped from one of the killers. Director Gary Fleder demonstrates visual flair and maintains an involving undercurrent of tension, but as this adaptation of James Patterson's novel approaches its climax, familiar elements combine to form a chronic case of thriller déjà vu. It's altogether competent filmmaking in the service of a moribund story of competing psychopaths, and by the time the serial killers reach the home stretch of their twisted contest, the movie's dangerously close to Freddy Kruger territory, with a finale that could've been borrowed from any dozen similar thrillers. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Kiss the Girls   January 5, 2010
    Arnita D. Brown (USA)
Forensic detective and best-selling crime author Alex Cross is cool and professional about his work, passionate and protective about his family. A widower with a teenage son and a daughter, the bonds of blood are all important to him. So when his niece Naomi turns up missing from her college campus in North Carolina, Cross knows he must apply his formidable investigative skills to search for her. This is a very good movie. I think the story line is very good. And Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd performed very well in this movie. It does feature an important plot twist I haven't seen in any other movie like this. Watch it.

A serial-killer / collector called Cassanova is stalking, abducting, and murdering beautiful, young women. Dr. Cross (Morgan Freeman from SE7EN) must help police track him down before he kills again. Cassanova's latest victim (Ashley Judd from BUG) escapes, giving authorities their first big break. Ms. Judd is tough and believable in her role as a kickboxing doctor. As nutty as that may sound, she pulls it off brilliantly! Freeman plays his psychologist / cop character w/ his usual ease. The rest, including the badguys, are mere fodder. KISS THE GIRLS isn't the best thriller ever made, but it is a good one. Co-stars Cary Elwes (SAW)...

I had a deja-vu feeling watching this fairly routine serial killer flick, especially since Ashley Judd seems to be playing Jodie Foster and the twin sickos who kidnap girls are the usual horror show. The underground chamber of horrors was all too familiar as well. Still, Morgan Freeman almost always lifts up anything he's in and this rip-off is no exception. Jeremy Piven makes a brief cameo, years before "Entourage." There's the usual nail-biting moment and a red herring or two for good measure. Not the worst of its genre, by any means.

    The Bottom Line:

Kiss the Girls just about defines the concept of a forgettable movie; aside from the talent of the two leads there is nothing whatsover remarkable about this run-of-the-mill thriller and there is thus no reason to watch or purchase it.
