Amazon.com A movie that would not have been out of place in the run of paranoid-political thrillers of the 1970s, Shooter works an entertaining variation on the assassination picture. Mark Wahlberg, carrying over good mojo from The Departed, slides neatly into the character of Bob Lee Swagger, master marksman. Swagger has retreated from his duty as an off-the-books hired gun for the military, having become disillusioned with his government (switching on his TV at his remote mountain cabin, he mutters, "Let's see what kind of lies they're trying to sell us today."). Ah, but the government needs Swagger to scope out the location of a rumored attempt on the life of the president, so a shadowy government operative (Danny Glover) begs Swagger to use his sniper's skills to out-fox the assassin. From there--well, spoilers are not fair, since the movie has a few legitimate shocks and a very nice wrong-man scenario about to unfold. A novel by the Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Stephen Hunter gives the movie a logical spine, even if the premise itself is the stuff of conspiracy theorists. Wahlberg gets support from Michael Pena, as a skeptical FBI agent; Kate Mara, as a trustworthy widow; and Ned Beatty, trailing along memories of Network, as a supremely cynical Senator. Along with the well-executed action sequences (the previously unreliable director Antoine Fuqua gets it in gear here), the movie includes a few potshots at the Bush administration. No, that doesn't put Shooter at the level of The Parallax View or All the President's Men, but it provides some tang along with the flying bullets. --Robert Horton Beyond Shooter More Sniper / Hit Man Movies on DVD | More DVDs with Mark Wahlberg | The Novel | Stills from Shooter (click for larger image)

Good movie. January 28, 2010 Absolute Zero (California) This is an enjoyable movie with a lot of replay value (I've watched it a number of times and don't get tired of it). Having it on blu-ray is very nice as there is some incredible scenery in the film. Due to my setup, I actually like the fact that it has dolby 5.1 and not HD dolby... This allows me to get surround sound via a digital optical cable. I have my picture going through an hdmi cable but audio through the optical cable, because of this, a few of my blu-rays have to be played with linear audio and I can't use bitstream (taking away my surround sound). I think it would be great if all blu-rays offered both sound options.
First Class Action Film for Guys (or Gals who like action movies) January 22, 2010 David (Houston, Texas, USA) This movie had been recommended to me by my grandson as one of the best movies he had ever seen; after watching this movie with my wife I can see why he said that. My wife on the other hand decided she never wanted to see it again.
I found the movie held my interest all the way through and provided the gratifying ending that these movies can often have. The surround sound and picture were convincing and the dialog was easily understood.
The picture may go a little over the top with its painting of the villains as totally without any redeeming qualities. The demise of the villains as they are picked off one by one is, however, done with satisfying thoroughness.
It winds up being an exciting action film that provides a lot of sound and fury; a fun time for the action movie fan (either guy or gal)!
Poorly Cast For A GREAT Book December 27, 2009 Ol Ranger (Land of 10,000) The start of the "Bob Lee Swagger" legacy was "Point Of Impact"! One of my 3 favorite books of all time, (Lonesome Dove & Silence of the Lambs). First mistake? casting: Mark Wahlberg is a 2nd rate "B" list actor at best. The ideal for this guy is someone like a little bit younger Clint Eastwood. Make this great story a "MAJOR' motion picture, not some watered down version. Could NOT be more disapointed. Bob "The Nailer" is one of my favorite action characters, and they give me Mark Friggen Wahlberg.
Shooter December 24, 2009 Arnita D. Brown (USA) Mark Wahlberg, an actor whose fierce gaze and sneaky humor can carry a movie over the rockiest terrain. This movie has mayhem and drama. Entertaining.
good action packed movie November 22, 2009 O. Rios (Texas) Shooter is a solid movie about a former U.S. Miltary Sniper, Bob Lee Swagger, who is abandoned by the army and left for dead in Africa.
He returns home and makes a living in a secluded part of the country with almost zero contact to the outside world. He's tabbed by Danny Glover, a former purple heart winner himself, to plot an assassination attempt against the President in order to prevent the assassination.
Swagger scouts the locations where the President is going to speak and finally figures out that the only possible place is in Philadelphia. He is with Glover's outfit at the time to prevent the assassination only to unknowingly become part of the plot.
Swagger gets away and slowly starts exposing the truth behind the attempted murder, but not of the President, but of an Ethopian priest who was speaking before the president.
On his way, Swagger runs into Michael Pena, who plays FBI Agent Nick Memphis. Memphis is fresh out of graduation from the Academy and is suddenly thrown into presidental detail? all be it, from a very long distance away.
Shooter is a back and forth action movie with a deep story that you have to pay attention to. My only problem with the film was the acting of Michael Pena, at the very beginning it's very corny and fake.
-He's fresh out of the Academy and all of a sudden on Presidential detail?
-He's pretty much figured out within a day that Swagger didn't shoot anybody
-He's found out who or what shot the Priest
the other thing i didn't like, and this more than anything, was the fact that the "shooter" of the priest is exposed way to early in the film.
The viewer should have been left to ponder who or what did the shooting rather than giving it away so soon in the film.
but overall, Shooter is a good Saturday Night film, well worth watching.
