Amazon.com Surf's Up is a computer-animated sports mockumentary about penguin surfing contests, which makes it stand out from the crowd of penguin movies. The story unfolds as it would on ESPN, with interviews (with penguins) overlapping footage of (penguin) surfing action, gradually unveiling the tale of Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf, Holes), a young penguin from Antarctica with dreams of winning a surfing competition--a competition named after his idol, the missing Big Z (Jeff Bridges, The Big Lebowski). But when he joins the competition, Cody finds his zeal for winning may not be enough to defeat the cruel reigning champ, Tank Evans (Diedrich Bader, Grim & Evil). The story of Surf's Up is typical stuff: Youngster learns to value friendship over material success. But the documentary style gives the movie a different rhythm from the usual feature-length cartoon; it stutters and skips around, dithers on side topics, and backtracks to catch up with supporting characters. Some viewers may be annoyed, but others--perhaps the more media-savvy--will find it a refreshing change of pace. (Kids who don't watch much sports, however, may just find it confusing.) Surf's Up also features the voices of James Woods (Hercules), Zooey Deschanel (Elf), and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). --Bret Fetzer More Surf's Up on Amazon.com CD Soundtrack | Visit our Surf's Store | Surf's Up: Coloring and Activity Book | Stills from Surf's Up (click for larger image)

Surf's Up (Full Screen Special Edition) January 18, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) Cody Maverick is a penguin who has a passion for surfing. Hitching a ride to Pen Gu Island, Cody and his chicken friend, Joe attempt to participate in the Big Z Memorial Surf Off. This documentary tracks his steps from leaving his home, training with Big Z and attempting the big challenge. This movie has an amazing cast with enjoyable characters. So be ready to laugh your socks off, I know I did. Great family fun movie, or just a movie for you.
Great family show January 4, 2010 G. Duncan (Idaho) This movie is one of our family favorites. We purchased this one for a cousin that borrowed ours and wanted his own. It is funny yet has a good message. Chicken Joe rocks.
Classic surfer vibe, dude December 23, 2009 Richard Millar (Toronto, Ontario Canada) A true surfer film with all the cliches - loved it! The psuedo-documentary style plays on classic sports films and the excellent animation makes the water and waves look great. Love the voice choices - especially for Big Z. Kids and adults will enjoy!
Ride the wave December 6, 2009 R. Kyle (USA) Seems penguins were all the rage for animated characters for a bit. This addition to penguin lore stars young Cody Maverick (Shia LaBeouf), a lonely kid who believes that winning a penguin surfing contest will get him the respect he craves. His role model is Big Z (Jeff Bridges), the penguin surfing legend who once gave him a necklace and some respect. But Big Z's gone and the surfing legend is Tank (Diedrich Bader) an egotistical legend in his own mind as much as anyone else's who is pretty much the antithesis of everything Big Z represented.
Cody decides to leave his home of Shiverpool and go to the big surfing competition. There, he meets a surprising mentor, Geek, who quit surfing long ago. While Geek tells him about the craft, he also gives the young penguin some lessons about winning.
The story's done in a 'mockumentary' interview style with much of the action being characters talking about what's going on. While I generally love animated features, this one left me literally cold. My favorite penguins are still the Madagascar crew!
Rebecca Kyle, December 2009
Nice ride man, nice ride..... November 28, 2009 Dea Niewiemski (Phoenix, AZ United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really didn't care for this movie the first time I saw it.....but after watching it a couple more times, I really started to appreciate the subtle humor. And being that I am a person who grew up watching Bugs Bunny and never understanding a lot of the subtle humor of the Warner Bros cartoons, I don't think there is anything that would be offensive for a child to see.
