The greatest television show ever created. July 1, 2009 Saint Thomas (Kent, Ohio) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Okay, first of all, I wouldn't expect someone to just drop the kind of cash that this here box set demands. Personally speaking, I love the entire series of The X-Files and wanted to write a review about the show as a whole. This box set is really for the "die hard" fans of the show (a total of nine seasons and some extras to boot) and I'm sure it doesn't disappoint. That being said, if you're just the casual viewer of the show, might I suggest buying only season one or maybe one of the "Mythology" collections instead. After all, I'm sure that once you've been exposed to the world of The X-Files, you'll quickly become a fan. Now, about the actual show The X-Files. Where do I begin? It's an amazing series that seemingly has something for everybody. If you're into Horror, it's got it. If you're into Science Fiction, it's got it. If your into Action and Suspense, it's got it. I can remember coming together with the rest of my family on Friday nights, just to watch this show. Eventually The X-Files was moved from it's Friday night time slot into a Sunday night time slot and our family still got together and watched it! I think that says something about the series if it can hold the attention of four different family members. Well done. Story wise, The X-Files is all over the place. From the typical and expected theme of alien abduction, to the horrifying and strangely intriguing myth of the "black oil" monster that could jump from host to host (much like THE THING only less messy of a creature), The X-Files story line is a large and expansive one. To try and cover them all in one little Amazon review would to give the series some serious discredit. First of all, I was always a fan of the "Monster Of The Week" episodes. Being a Horror fan, I found much enjoyment in the monster episodes more than I did the myth and alien ones. Of course this was how I felt when I was younger and watching the series on television. I guess I just didn't have the attention span for the mythology episodes yet. I only came to enjoy those episodes many years after the show went off the air, and I decided one day to start collecting the series. After that happend, I found that I was hooked into all the stories, not just the "monster" ones. Anyways, the best of the "monster of the week" episodes (in my own personal opinion) were on seasons two and three. For some reason, those are my favorite seasons and I feel that they harbor some of the best aspects of the show over all. In season one, we're treated to a little Horror thriller episode called "Darkness Falls", about tiny little bugs that cocoon it's prey and hang them from tree's. It's a very creepy episode indeed. Another season one Horror type episode is called "Shapes", which is about Moulder and Scully investigating a series of Werewolf related murders. Below this review, I'll write which episodes from each season that I personally feel are the true highlights. Some of The X-Files stories are familiar "classic" Horror themes such as Vampire's, Zombies and Ghosts. Other episodes are more Science Fiction in nature. Dealing with aliens, government conspiracies and personal loss for our main characters, Scully and Fox Moulder. It didn't matter what the theme of each episode was because in the end, The X-Files was really about well written stories, excellent acting and classic characters. Some of the so called "fans" of the series started becoming disillusioned with The X-Files, mainly because of it's divided themes. Some people only liked the Horror episodes, where as others were only into the "mythology" story lines. In the end, The X-Files has many different faces, some of which worked better than others. I'm not above commenting on the small failures that happend in the series. Like any other long running television show, mis-steps were bound to happen. After all, nothing is perfect. A lot of people seem to think that the show started to go down hill when David Duchovny left the show for his own personal reasons. This just isn't true, although I can see how some people might feel that way considering Fox Moulder's character was very engaging. The show never really went "down hill" at any point. It just took some chances that I myself wouldn't have made. My own personal opinion concerning a "mis-step" for the series happend in one of the seasons that Duchovny was actually a part of. It would be the very experimental season number seven. Although it does have it's ups and downs, the biggest mistake was an episode called "First Person Shooter." The main reason this episode doesn't work for me is the wrong characterization of Moulder and Scully. Also, the episode has the weakest story out of the entire series. Sure, there were mis-steps before but never of this degree. Watching one of these mis-steps for such a great series is like watching your best friend or a a family member getting beat up. There isn't anything you can do about it except watch it happen. I'm sure it was episodes like "First Person Shooter" and another mis-step called "Hollywood A.D." that made the fans think the show has hit rock bottom. Shockingly enough, that episode was directed by David Duchovny! Sure, a few of the episodes in season seven were terrible but that shouldn't hold you back from watching the amazing season eight and the descent follow up, season nine. Also, despite it sounds like I seriously dislike season seven, that isn't the case. There were just too many mistakes, too many bad choices, too many experimental episodes. When all is said and done, what you get with The X-Files is an amazing television series that wasn't afraid to take some chances. The best years of it's nine season run are definitely in the earlier ones, yet I don't want to send out the wrong impression. There are plenty of amazing stand alone episodes in the later seasons. Don't let one or two bad episodes ruin the experience for you. It's too good of a TV show for you to let that happen! In todays day and age of Starbucks coffee, reality television shows, expensive dinner dates, shopping for name brand clothing, SUV's the size of army tanks and "clubbing" every weekend, I can see why some of our more faster paced members of society wouldn't want to devote themselves to a show like The X-Files. Especially since it has a nine season run! Of course I'm being sarcastic. I find the lack of attention span in todays society to be very annoying. There was a point and time where sitting down to an hour long program or reading a lengthy book was "tops." Now, if it isn't funny or not over within five minutes, people just don't seem to care about it. Go figure. Anyways, I've said my bit. Hopefully I've been helpful about The X-Files and this box set. Enjoy! Over and out.
Quid Pro Quo, Clarise June 15, 2009 Steven A. Chesser (usa) Oops that was Silence of the Lambs. This is practically my favorite show of all time EVEN though there are episodes that thrill me, and episodes that bore me to tears. Namely ANY of the alien mythology episodes which are ridiculously intricate and non exciting. Odd they made the new movie considering EVERYONE but Scully, Muldar and Skinner are dead. All the stand alone episodes were good to great. Some of my Faves: Quagmire Darkness Falls Terms of Endearment The Rain King Pusher Kitsunigari D.P.O Syzygy Detour Pine Bluff Variant Amazing Maleeni Duane Barry Dreamland Fo Le Aduex (?) Tooms Hungry Paper Hearts Drive Killswitch Chinga Wetwired the list goes on and on...also note how many films were ripped off from X-Files episodes-Lake Placid (from Quagmire even the same water scene in the beginning!), The Matrix (Killswitch), Speed (Drive) The Craft (Syzygy)the list goes on...
Great Set June 6, 2009 A. Allen The set is great, I just hate how Seasons 1 through 4 are in Full Frame. The movie and 5-9 are in Widescreen. It's a pretty beautiful set and I think if you don't already own the show then you should buy it, if you do, then it depends on how big of a fan you are.
all in one May 26, 2009 R. Khader (Jordan) if you don't have the whole series like me, go for it.. it is all in one package
A MUST!!!! May 22, 2009 T. G. Baudouin (Mexico City, D.F. Mexico) I have loved this series for years and although I already had the 9 seasons of it -bought little by little over the years- couldn't resist buying the collection. And it is SO worth it!! Was a little doubtful to buy it because I wasn't sure it would arrive safe all the way to Mexico City...but it did!! A little bit bended, but nothing too terrible to be a serious problem. The box is awesome and the extras are a little something that will surely melt a true-phile heart. Highly recommended!!
