Literary adaptations just don't get any better than director Joe Wright's 2005 version of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. The key word here is adaptation, because Wright and gifted screenwriter Deborah Moggach have taken liberties with Austen's classic novel that purists may find objectionable, but in this exquisite film their artistic decisions are entirely justified and exceptionally well executed. It's a more rural England that we see here, circa 1790 (as opposed to Austen's early 19th century), in which Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) is one of several sisters primed for marriage, with an anxious mother (Brenda Blethyn) only too desperate to see her daughters paired off with the finest, richest husbands available. Elizabeth is strong-willed and opinionated, but her head (not to mention her pride and prejudice) lead her heart astray when she meets the wealthy Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), whose own sense of decency and discretion (not to mention his pride and prejudice) prevent him from expressing his mutual affection. They're clearly meant for each other, and as Knightley's performance lights up the screen (still young enough to be girlishly impertinent, yet wise beyond her 20 years), Austen's timeless romance yields yet another timeless adaptation, easily on par with the beloved BBC miniseries that has been embraced by millions since originally broadcast in 1995. Individual tastes will vary as to which version should be considered "definitive," but with a stellar supporting cast including Judi Dench and Donald Sutherland, this impeccable production achieves its own kind of perfection. --Jeff Shannon

    Description
Academy Award nominee* Keira Knightley stars in the greatest love story of all time. When Elizabeth Bennet (Knightley) meets the handsome Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), she believes he is the last man on earth she could ever marry. But as their lives become intertwined, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity. Jane Austen's masterpiece novel comes to the screen in the film critics said "makes you believe in true love and happily-ever-after" (Stephen Holden, The New York Times).

What a wonderful movie! Saw it on TV between lots of commercials and just had to have it so I could watch uninterrupted. Flows much better that way; and the music is a standout.

I know this has already nearly 1000 reviews but It is a wonderful story and well done. If you are feeling romantic or just want to have a little laugh this is the movie for you.Not difficult to follow and yet complex enough to hold your attention to the end.

The music is AMAZING and the cinematography id to die for! This is seriously the best Pride and Prejudice movie out there.

The good thing is, it can also be used in classes as the actors portray the era convincingly well and help the readers to the novel visualize the period life and setting.

I ordered the Keira Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice along with the Firth/ BBC versions because I love this Jane Austin story and because of "Toomuchtimeonmyhands" review. I have not yet played the Firth/ BBC versions, so I will review them later. I was so disappointed when I opened the Keira Knightley DVD and found sticky goo all around the center opening on both sides of the DVD! I am trying to return it now, but so far the return links do not work. I am awaiting an email reply for resolution. Check your products carefully as soon as they arrive, since the vendors obviously do not.

4 out of 5 stars A fresh take on an old tale   June 25, 2009

As a child, I was in love with the novel Pride and Prejudice, and the BBC version. I could find almost no fault with either. But I've grown up a bit, and I now understand that P&P was written by a very young woman and there is much more to the story than what she readily reveals.

Joe Wright's adaptation is not a literal take, and it's not meant to be. Despite inaccuracies and omissions, it is a refreshing perspective on the story that shows the characters, not as Jane Austen painted them, but as they really would have been.

His version of the Bennet parents is particularly admirable; they are well-meaning and loving parents, not without their faults, but doing the best they can. The Bennet sisters really look their ages, which makes Lydia's flighty mistakes all the more poignant and Mary's somber attitude all the more comical.

And Lizzy is a realistic twenty-year-old girl who, no matter how clever, is still a naive and confused young creature. The animal attraction between her and Darcy is obvious from the moment they meet, in a way that the reserved performances in the BBC version and the just-the-facts-ma'am narrative of the novel don't capture. In reality, one does not fall in love based on facts. One falls in love based on pheromones, and Lizzy loved Darcy even when she hated him.

When they finally meet on the grounds of Longbourne as dawn is breaking and realize that they are truly, madly, deeply - the moment (and subsequent scenes) perfectly captures the overwhelming, almost frightening bliss of first love. It's gorgeous and almost gives you butterflies just to watch them. These are the things about this movie that I love - the feelings that it captures, the emotions it reminds me of when I was just a girl reading the book and how much I loved Lizzy and Darcy and wanted them to be happy.

Is it perfect? No. Does it leave out chunks of the story? Yes. Despite its reputation as Regency-era chick lit, P&P is rather plot-heavy and Wickham barely exists in this adaptation. (And what there is to be had of him is badly written/acted - he's terribly whiny and not at all appealing.) But for those of us who already know the plot by heart, there's nothing lost in his beautiful and passionate film.
