Amazon.com Based on the best-selling book of the same name, the film version of The Nanny Diaries is a cute chick flick, but it lacks the witty tone of the novel, which took time to flesh out the characters. The tone is set early on when the narrator notes, "In Africa they have the saying: 'It takes a village to raise a child.' But for the tribe of the Upper Eastside of Manhattan, it takes just one person: the nanny." Recent college graduate Annie Braddock (a brunette Scarlett Johansson) becomes the nanny for Mr. and Mrs. X, a narcissistic and selfish couple who have no clue that what their precocious son Grayer really needs is a mom and a dad who will pay attention to him. At first, Annie can't believe her good fortune. Caring for Grayer a few hours each day in the X's luxurious apartment seems like a dream job. But as her job turns into a 24/7 nightmare, she loses her identity and becomes Nanny. Annie's attempts to befriend her oddly charismatic boss are met with rebuffs by Mrs. X (Laura Linney). When Annie mentions her home life, Mrs. X is stunned. "Nanny, you never mentioned you had a mother," she says, as if she expected that nannies were shot out of giant pods. Despite the film's flaws, Linney is a standout. Like Meryl Streep, who made an unlikeable character sympathetic in The Devils Wears Prada, Linney brings humor to her role. Unfortunately, Paul Giamatti (as the philandering Mr. X) and singer Alicia Keys (as Annie's best friend Lynette) are wasted in their thankless roles. While we are meant to feel sorry for Annie, we are left wondering why a beautiful and educated young American woman would allow herself to be manipulated into working ridiculous hours for less than minimum-wage pay. When Annie finally does stand up to her employers, it's a little too late. For everyone. --Jae-Ha Kim

A Harmless Way to Kill Two Hours June 26, 2009 Michael Griswold (Rockford, USA) The Nanny Diaries has a great cast from Scarlett Johansen, Laura Linney, Paul Giamati, Chris Evans, and Alicia Keyes and I thought the idea of having the movie wrapped around the idea of a journal for grad school, but despite the best efforts of this cast, everything seemed like it was just put out there, Annie's a college graduate trying to find herself, Mr. X is a creepy old man, Mrs. X is self absorbed and more concerned about shopping and social engagements amid the elites than her own son. Based on the cast alone, I wanted to rate this higher, but there's something missing like another reviewer said about expecting something more about the biting realities of the upper East Side. Still it is a perfectly harmless way to spend two hours and eight to ten dollars, these things no matter how good they look on paper sometimes are lacking in practice.
entertaining June 20, 2009 B. E Jackson (Pennsylvania) I really liked the Nanny Diaries. It was about a woman who goes through a bunch of trouble trying to find what kind of career she wants, and ends up being a nanny. What's interesting are all the amazing adventures she has while being a nanny. It's mostly a comedy movie, but there's a little bit of drama too. Or maybe it's the other way around? Maybe! Anyway, the nanny finds out what it's like to care about children and this results in lots of entertaining scenes involving the little boy of the family she works for. The mother/wife of the house has a stuck-up and uptight attitude, and she plays her role very well and it comes across as believable. This movie tells a good story that all the young women searching for their career in the world would find a lot of interest in. There's also a positive message at the end of the film that I won't reveal, since it's a spoiler.
Didn't Want to See it, Glad I Did... May 30, 2009 Kelly Klepfer (Iowa) I had no intention of seeing this flick. My daughter, who spent a few years as a nanny, didn't care for it. And I didn't know what to expect. But at the video store, with coupon in hand and slim pickings, I rented it. I ended up being charmed by the unique quirkiness of this film. Nanny Diaries includes a hint of Mary Poppins along with a museum-type look at family norms and not so norms throughout the movie. This film has elements of terrible sadness and that is why my daughter didn't like it. The viewer gets to see the inside of a very unhealthy family. Annie (Johannson) doesn't come from much healthier stock with a mom who is over-bearing and hard to please and a father who is a non-figure in her life. Annie hits her crossroad moment when a potential new employer asks her who she is. Annie discovers who she is by her short time as a nanny. I was impressed with the total lack of on-screen sexuality. Annie has a behind closed doors moment with a kissing scene leading up to it and Mr. X is in two compromising situations that mostly play out off camera. One or two F-Bombs and a smattering of the usual curse words give it the PG-13. I was pleased with the ending and overall really liked this film. The acting is very good, Giamatti was very easy to despise and Linney played her role as vulnerable selfish socialite flawlessly.
ABOUT AS ENTERTAINING AS A MIGRAINE! May 29, 2009 ! MR. KNOW IT ALL ;-b (TRI STATE AREA) Ouch! What can I say that's positive about this film?...well...it has a good cast and you get to see Scarlett Johansson in her underwear!, other than that this film is just painful! It's not nearly as funny as it thinks it is and I found myself wondering why this young woman was putting up with such abuse! I would call this a "chick flick", but that would be an insult to the genre! This is really not worth your time and I suggest sticking a pin in you eye if you want a similar result! 2 stars is a generous rating.
Annie the Nanny May 17, 2009 Amanda Richards (Georgetown, Guyana) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Annie Braddock: "There's a common belief among anthropologists that you must immerse yourself in an unfamiliar world in order to truly understand your own." Quite unintentionally, this is the third movie I've watched in a row featuring Scarlett Johansson, so I'm assuming that I'm subconsciously a fan. Unfortunately, she fails to impress in this one, which may or may not be the fault of the script, but damn - she looks and acts vapid, brainless and clueless. Short Attention Span Summary (SASS): 1. Annie wants to be an anthropologist 2. Her mom wants her to be a financier 3. She ends up as a nanny 4. As you may have already predicted, she learns that money doesn't buy happiness, love comes when you least expect it, and an assortment of other chick flick cliches. 5. Laura Linney gives the only performance worth your rental fee, while Paul Giamatti is still wondering what he was doing there in the first place. Alicia Keys and Chris Evans also have small dumbed-down parts. 6. All together now - CHICK FLICK!! Annie Braddock: "My desire to be an observer of life was actually keeping me from having one." Take Annie's advice - instead of watching this movie, go out and enjoy your life. Amanda Richards, May 16, 2009
