It's crude and sometimes awkward, but there's a gleefully subversive movie lurking inside I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry. By virtue of a tooth-grinding contrivance, two manly Manhattan firefighters, Adam Sandler and Kevin James, must move in together and pretend to be gay; after seeing life from the other side, they learn something about tolerance. Sandler is the obnoxious, aggressively offensive womanizer, while James plays a widowed dad worried about his effeminate son. Nothing is too surprising about the way this works out, except for the film's unabashedly gay-rights fervor. It's one thing for a sensitive art-house movie to preach to the choir, and quite another for Sandler to speak to his multiplex audience on how uncool it is to use a homophobic slur. Ham-handedly directed and almost proudly sloppy, Chuck & Larry wins points for remaining defiantly rude; a nicer movie wouldn't have been as effective. There's a hilarious supporting performance by Ving Rhames, and Jessica Biel brings her Kim Novak-style glamour to a truly unbelievable character. Rob Schneider and Richard Chamberlain (two names not generally brought together) are amusing in small roles. --Robert Horton

3 out of 5 stars Chuck, Larry, and Jessica Biel's Body   June 26, 2009
    Michael Griswold (Rockford, USA)
Adam Sandler and Kevin James star as heterosexual New York City firefighters Chuck and Larry who are forced into a domestic partnership, so that Larry can keep getting his benefits to help support his two children after his wife passes away. When a noisy city investigator threatens to expose their charade to the entire world, Chuck calls in a lawyer named Alex (Jessica Biel) to defend their partnership in front of the city council. The situation turns when Chuck (Adam Sandler.) falls for Alex, but can't tell her his feelings because Larry (Kevin James) will lose the case and his benefits leading to some awkward semi-funny situations. If your a fan of Adam Sandler and Kevin James comedy and/or seeing Jessica Biel's body, this movie is for you, if your looking for a serious movie though, take a pass.

I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK & LARRY

I am a huge Kevin James fan and when I found out about this movie I was extremely excited, come on Adam Sandler is in it to. A lot people don't seem to like the Happy Madison films for one reason or another but I have enjoyed all of them, especially any one with Kevin James and Steve Buscemi. Those two right there are two of my favorite actors of all time, Buscemi is absolutely an amazing actor and James is brilliant. Of course the whole group when to theaters to see this and was at my house the night it was released. This is not a classic movie but it is a fun one with some great characters and James is great in this.

The film follows Chuck [Sandler] and Larry [James] who are two firefighters in New York who are very much the opposite of each other. Chuck is a womanizer and Larry is still grieving over his wife and rearing two kids. It turns out that Larry can't switch is pension over to his kids so he has only one option, marry Chuck. He learns that when you marry again you can switch it to them, enter his idea for Chuck. Of course Chuck is not down with it at first but gives in for his friend and they form a domestic partnership. Of course when word gets out the city and their fellow firefighters are not happy with this, except Ving Rhames of course. Add in a beautiful woman named Jessica Biel and you have the makings for a good movie.

Director Dennis Dugan does a good job and shows why he is a vet at Happy Madison films, he keeps things moving nicely and nothing seems overly done. The writers of this film did a good job although it just doesn't work all the time. Still the performers keep things going nicely such as the great Kevin James. Once again he is cast in the every man role and plays a single father very well. Adam Sandler actually makes sense in this role, don't get me wrong I like him in everything but sometimes he over does it. Jessica Biel is as lovely as ever and turns in a great performance as does the legendary Dan Aykroyd. One of the greatest actors ever Steve Buscemi is very funny as the guy trying to prove them wrong and Ving Rhames gets close to stealing the show. Nich Turturro, Allen Covert, Gary Valentine and such all turn in great performances, and Dave Matthews steals the scene he is in away from Sandler. Rob Schneider is very funny as the preacher in Canada here and David Spade is great as well.

This will not win any Academy Awards but it is a good enough comedy to keep you entertained, and it is not an anti gay film like some seem to think. Sandler and company made sure to not try to offend any one. With that said this is a fun flick that I think most would enjoy, a rental for some a purchase for others. The thing about this flick is some may find it very upsetting [still don't know why] while others may think it is fine, I think the humor and style of the film is ok. Of course the reason to see this is because of Kevin James easily but every one especially Steve Buscemi and Ving Rhames turn in great performances.

All in all this is a fun movie with some off the wall moments and some good laughs. I recommend a rental first to see how you like it and then go from there. Me, I loved and own the DVD and T shirt combo. Kevin James once again does his thing and turns in another great performance.

5 out of 5 stars a good job with reality   March 30, 2009
    J. S. Sancho (USA)
The film I now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry is a great film that deals with the inequalities that gay couples face when it comes to marriage. I believe that the movie not only tries to deal with the fact that marriage is for everyone, regardless on who it is between. The film shows that the time period we are in now is much more accepting towards a gay lifestyle than the world people lived in about 45 to 60 years ago. An older gentelman in the film states that homosexuality is wrong and that gay marriage should not be allowed. In reality, gay couples should be allowed to marry because science hs proven that being gay is biological. The problem is that religion is making people believe that being gay is bad and should not be allowed to marry, and the movie does a great job of showing the battle between gay marriage and religion.

1 out of 5 stars Few laughs. Poorly done film.   February 17, 2009

I enjoy good comedies that make me laugh and forget the stresses of day to day life. This film, unfortunately, did not do that often. The jokes were strained and the writing tried too hard to get a laugh, mostly unsuccessfully. Furthermore, the camera work and editing were substandard--I expected better production value from an Adam Sandler vehicle.

This film gave me the impression that somebody came up with a funny premise and then rushed it to the screen. I wouldn't recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Comedy!!!   January 24, 2009

This is a very funny movie with Adam Sandler and Kevin James! They are hilarious together. Kevin plays Larry Valentine, and Adam plays Chuck Levine. Larry is a Firefighter who's wife died. Since he is distracted by his wife's passing, he hasn't changed the primary beneficiary of his pension from his wife to his children. The only way to do that is to get married. Larry sees an article about same-sex domestic partnership, and decides to have Chuck be is 'partner' Even though they are both straight, they have to go to Canada to get married, because no one will let gay people get married in the U.S.A. (I thought America was supposed to be about freedom.) Soon, a specialist is sent to investigate to see if they really are gay, or just trying to cheat the system. Chuck and Larry receive help from Alex McDonough, played by the beautiful Jessica Biel. While attending a gay costume benefit party, an anti-gay rights group come by and bash them for being gay. Chuck gets in a fight for being called a faggot. Even the guys at the Fire Department don't want them around. Later, they must go to court to prove that they are gay. If you are gay, and love comedy, you'll love I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY!!!
