Amazon.com Much like the films of Hal Hartley, Waitress is funny in a deadpan sort of way, but a sadness lurks below the surface. After making a splash in Hartley's The Unbelievable Truth and Trust, Adrienne Shelly turned to directing with Sudden Manhattan and I'll Take You There. Set in a small Southern town, her third picture revolves around waitress Jenna (Felicity's radiant Keri Russell), who works at Joe's Pie Diner (Joe is played by Andy Griffith). Jenna is the pastry genius who makes Joe's joint shine. Her co-workers include the forthright Becky (Cheryl Hines, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and insecure Dawn (Shelly). All three have man trouble, but Jenna has it the worst. Her husband, Earl (Jeremy Sisto, Six Feet Under), treats her like a piece of property. When she finds out she's pregnant, Jenna fears she'll be stuck with him forever. Then, she develops a crush on her married obstetrician, Dr. Pomatter (Nathan Fillion, Serenity). With the aid of her fanciful confections, like peachy keen tarts, their flirtation develops into a full-blown affair. It appears to be a no-win situation, but Shelly finds an empowering way to bring this bittersweet story to a close. If the candy-colored conclusion plays more like fantasy than reality, it's a fantasy worth embracing. Sadly, Shelly was murdered before Waitress ever saw the light of day (leaving behind a husband and child of her own). Fortunately, her final film is far more life-affirming than morose, although it does end with the word "goodbye." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Nathan Fillion, enough said. February 3, 2010 Constant Book Reader (Grand Rapids, MI USA) Nathan Fillion is one of the best actors ever. I enjoyed him just as much in this as I did in any other role. He is consistent in his excellence. The film itself was not the best I have seen, I was not terribly interested in the plot, as a whole, BUT I bought it anyway because there were a few good parts. If you like Nathan Fillion, he makes the movie, as he does everything else he is in, otherwise...I wouldn't bother. Chick flick!

If life were a pie it would easier to add the right ingredients to bake it up delicioiusly. This is a light hearted comedy about how things don't exactly fit in the recipe, but how everything flavors and adds to the final dish. But that is the fun of it. I watch it over and over and never get tired of the plot as it is slicing up the real deal. Sweet entertainment with pinches of witticism and crusty practicality. Keri is the pie, and the Dr is served a la mode. Bon appetit.
Pie Hopes, Comedy, and Delicious Drama January 17, 2010 Loyd E. Eskildson (Phoenix, AZ.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Waitress is a story of a small town waitress, Jenna (Keri Russell), with a knack for creating fantastic tasty pies. She works in a diner with two waitress friends, has a childish, jealous, self-centered husband, Earl (Jeremy Sisto), and a dream to win a $25,000 pie baking contest, open her own pie shop and change her unfulfilling life.
The beginning scene shows Jenna taking a pregnancy test that shows positive. She is now facing having an unplanned child as she was also planning on leaving her abusive husband. She then bakes "I Don't Want an Earl's Baby Pie - a quiche of egg and cheese with a smoked ham center.
When she visits her OB-GYN she finds she is replaced by a young, somewhat disorganized newcomer to town. He is handsome but married. Jenna and the new Dr. Pomatter (Nathan Fillion) are attracted to each other and soon start a relationship that opens Jenna up to other possibilities in life. She can make her own decisions in life.
Several pies are concocted in Jenna's mind at critical moments in her life. Interludes during the film show a pie being made as Jenna narrates the ingredients.
The film finds flavor with Jenna's quick-tongued fellow waitresses along with classic television star Andy Griffith who plays Joe, the wise owner of the diner. There is delicious drama during the fun, and although adultery is conducted as a sidebar, it looks like the characters just want a piece of happiness in their small quiet lives.
Overall Waitress is an optimistic entertaining comedy and a story of dream fulfillment.
Breezily sweet October 30, 2009 One-Line Film Reviews (Easton, MD) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Bottom Line:
Keri Russell is cute and spunky and Nathan Fillion is adorably awkward as the object of her affection, so it's rather a shame when the movie falls back on dumb stock characters like Keri Russell's selfish pig of a husband (ever notice how many attractive, smart, and nice women in movies are dating complete jerks?) and doesn't try for anything greater than a fairly standard, albeit rather successful, romantic comedy formula; ultimately Waitress is as sweet as the pie the plot focuses on, but not very filling.

One of the worst movies to date... October 7, 2009 Lys Smith (My fantasy world...) 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
Now, I have a wide taste in movies; I'll watch almost anything and find something good about it.
Not so for 'Waitress'.
I watched the movie because I'm a huge Nathan Fillon fan, and because there were quite a few good reviews for it. In hindsight, I should have stuck with my original reservations that if a movie is based around pies it's either tacky or superficial.
The plot is non-existent, the characters are flat and the whole movie is emotionally unsatisfying. I honestly found it hard to sit through the whole movie and finish it. As it was, I took frequent tea breaks to stop myself simply throwing the disk in the trash.
