Product Description Movie DVD
Amazon.com Much like the films of Hal Hartley, Waitress is funny in a deadpan sort of way, but a sadness lurks below the surface. After making a splash in Hartley's The Unbelievable Truth and Trust, Adrienne Shelly turned to directing with Sudden Manhattan and I'll Take You There. Set in a small Southern town, her third picture revolves around waitress Jenna (Felicity's radiant Keri Russell), who works at Joe's Pie Diner (Joe is played by Andy Griffith). Jenna is the pastry genius who makes Joe's joint shine. Her co-workers include the forthright Becky (Cheryl Hines, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and insecure Dawn (Shelly). All three have man trouble, but Jenna has it the worst. Her husband, Earl (Jeremy Sisto, Six Feet Under), treats her like a piece of property. When she finds out she's pregnant, Jenna fears she'll be stuck with him forever. Then, she develops a crush on her married obstetrician, Dr. Pomatter (Nathan Fillion, Serenity). With the aid of her fanciful confections, like peachy keen tarts, their flirtation develops into a full-blown affair. It appears to be a no-win situation, but Shelly finds an empowering way to bring this bittersweet story to a close. If the candy-colored conclusion plays more like fantasy than reality, it's a fantasy worth embracing. Sadly, Shelly was murdered before Waitress ever saw the light of day (leaving behind a husband and child of her own). Fortunately, her final film is far more life-affirming than morose, although it does end with the word "goodbye." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

RIP Adrienne Shelly June 29, 2009 Just Peachy (Michigan) This movie is incredibly cute. It is not very well known but it definitely should be! The movie stars Keri Russell as Jenna, a waitress who is underappreciated by her husband. The story shows her simple life get more and more complicated. It is a romantic comedy that is one of my personal favorites. I'm not going to give too much away but the story does show Jenna cheating on her husband and wishing not to have a baby. I dont think that kids under 13 would understand and appreciate this movie. How could you go wrong with the opening montage consisting only of pies being made? Yum!
For some reason I like it. June 25, 2009 Lisa Allen I don't know why, but I love this movie. It's sad though. But maybe it's because I was pregnant when I watched it.
Bittersweet and hilarious all at once! June 9, 2009 Alan Starr (Lawrence, MA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Hilarious dry, wry comedy with some laugh-out-loud moments. My (obvious) favorite parts are the the names for the various pie creations - too funny! Made my Top Ten for 2007!
A slice of perfection! May 23, 2009 GRL (Bremen, IN United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is one of the best movies I have ever seen! Everything about it was perfect (the script/acting/chemistry of the cast was superb!). Yes, there are down points of the movie (the relationship with her awful husband), but it all comes to a happy ending. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to see an uplifting piece of quality work. It was just beautiful any way you slice it! ;)
Lovely May 21, 2009 R. Swanson (New Mexico) This is a lovely, heart-warming, slightly off-beat little film. I loved the whole idea of pie-making. Who ever has a real, home-made pie in a diner anymore? Who even makes pies anymore? The story is sweet and just real enough to keep you engaged. The actors are perfectly cast and do wonderful jobs. It was a treat to see Andy Griffith again. I subtract one star, however, due to the ending. It didn't quite add up to me. After the long build up of the excessively tender and passionate relationship of the waitress and the doctor, it seemed awfully easy for her to end it. The film tells us that she is so in love with her daughter that she doesn't need anyone else...except her pie making. Hmmm. Still if you don't expect it to be too realistic or logical, it's worth seeing.
