Amazon.com Nora Ephron wrote the brisk screenplay for this 1989 romantic comedy, director Rob Reiner made a nicely glossy New York story (very much in a Woody Allen vein) out of it, and Billy Crystal's unstoppable charm made it something really special. Crystal and Meg Ryan play longtime platonic friends who keep dancing around their deeper feelings for one another, and Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher are their respective pals who fall in love and get married. Ryan doesn't get a lot of funny material, but her performance is typically alive and intuitive, and she more than holds her own with Crystal's comic motor mouth and sweet sentimentality. Reiner is on comfortable ground, liberated from the burden of making serious statements in the lead-footed manner of subsequent features. --Tom Keogh

Pretty good escapist chick-flick March 3, 2010 R. Swanson (New Mexico) I was in the mood for something not-very-challenging and this seemed like a good choice. Sometimes you just don't want to think and this was one of those days. I like Meg Ryan a lot and hoped this would be as good as the two later films she made from Nora Ephron scipts, Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. They weren't, maybe because of the presence of Billy Crystal. He was actually very good in the film, but I found it hard to believe that a woman as good looking as Meg Ryan would ever take him seriously.
When she was teemed up with Tom Hanks, the chemistry was much better.
Other than that, the script was mediocre and terribly predictable. You knew from the git-go what was going to happen. It smacked terribly of Woody Allen's Annie Hall, down to the pairing of the short, shlubby guy with the taller, beautiful blond girl. Some of her outfits seemed to have been taken right out of Diane Keaton's closet.
Carrie Fisher as the trusty side-kick was good. She's such an interesting actress, I'd like to see her in more starring roles and not always relegated to the supporting cast.
My own last critical comment is for Meg Ryan's hairstyle. I lived in both Hyde Park, Chicago, where the film started and New York, where it ended, during that era and I didn't see anyone wearing with such horrible hair.
I think this is one of those films that played well at the time it was released but hasn't aged well.
I've watched this film more times than I can remember. February 28, 2010 That Was Cool. (Phoenix, Arizona, USA) When I watch a film more than once I like it . . . I've watched this film more times than I can remember, as in probably over fifty times since I first watched it.
When a romantic comedy can make me laugh and bring tears to my eyes I know it is good.
The acting is first rate A+ as is the script. It is a feel good movie and you will feel good too at the end.
Classic Romantic Comedy January 18, 2010 Cean Colcord This is a classic love story about two people who despise one another, but over time begin to fall madly in love with one another. Fantastic performances by all who are cast.

Best Rom-Com of the last thirty years October 22, 2009 Jason Kirkfield (Rocky Mountain High) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Is this the best Rom-Com of the last thirty years? Might be.
It's also Harry Connick, Jr.'s introduction to most of America. He was just twenty-one when the movie came out.
I have the "Special Edition" from 2001. It includes commentary by Director Rob Reiner as well as a documentary (there's some duplication between the two). Not sure the newer "Collector's Edition" offers much over and above that, other than a nicer cover and some featurettes.
