    Product Description
First Look King Of California (Blu-ray) After spending several years in a mental institute, Charlie (Michael Douglas) is sent home reuniting with his teenagedaughter Miranda (Evan Rachel Wood). Charlie becomes obsessed with the notion that a long-lost Spanish treasure is buried underneath their local suburban California Costco. Disconnected from reality and his daughter's life, Charlie's erratic behavior disrupts Miranda's peaceful existence. Initiallyskeptical, Miranda soon finds herself joining in Charlie's questionable antics in an effort to believe in her father and give him one last shot at accomplishing his dreams in this darkly funny, exciting and surprisingly hopeful take on the modern family and the American dream.

Michael Douglas is such a great dramatic actor (not to mention villain) that it's worth remembering what a strong comedic performer he can be (War of the Roses, Romancing the Stone). In King of California, he digs into his offbeat lighter role with relish and vigor. Yet he softens the scene-chewing with appropriate poignancy, given that he's playing a mentally ill deadbeat who's essentially left his daughter to raise herself--and him. Douglas plays Charlie, a troubled yet good-humored musician who's just been released from institutional care. Evan Rachel Wood is his wise-beyond-her-years daughter, Miranda, who pays the bills, keeps house, and even buys a car as an unlicensed 15-year-old. The film examines the bond between troubled dad and grounded teen, and it's to both actors' credit that the slight (and slightly incredulous) plot doesn't diminish the impact of their love or anguish.

Charlie's convinced a buried Spanish treasure lies beneath the local Costco (one of many companies given costar billing; others include McDonald's, Petco, Target, and Chuck E. Cheese). The plot follows Charlie's single-minded, impossible-dream journey, while the world-weary Miranda is resigned to following ("Time to get on that old bipolar pony and ride," she mutters). But along the way, dad and daughter find true ways to reconnect, and therein lies the true majesty of King of California --A.T. Hurley

4 out of 5 stars Long Live the King...   January 9, 2010
    Kenneth A. Nelson (Pensacola, FL)
What a nice way to spend a couple of hours. Being able to use the "pause" button without the threat-of-death from the rest of the viewers is a wonderful relief (no pun intended). There's enough story to keep everyone coming back to watch more, but at the same time, free to pop some corn, get some ice cream or use the facilities.

A delightful movie with Michael Douglas playing a completely unexpected role. The film is a darkish comedy with heartwarming overtones. Watching the Father/Daughter relationship grow is worth more than the gold, supposidly buried under the local Costco, that Dad is planning on digging up.

This is a giggle picture, not a fall off your seat, hysterical fit type of comedy; but you'll be constantly entertained and still be able to use the bathroom without any danger.

Long Live Michael Douglas... Long Live the California King!

    5 out of 5 stars A treasure   December 29, 2009
Damian P. Gadal (Santa Barbara, CA USA)
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. The story and performances were funny and touching. What I found interesting was the fact that there was really more than one story being told. The obvious comedic one of the strained (at times) relationship between a "nutty" father and his daughter. The 2nd story was slightly more subtle, and that was the State of California's fall from grace.

Michael Douglas' character is in pursuit of gold treasure, in the Golden State. It's the dream that brought fame to California. The journal of the Spanish explorer Father Juan Florismarte Garces describes a wild, beautiful and intriguing land filled with possibility, as we hear of this great land we are treated to scenes of over-development, and strip malls.

The dream's been buried and replaced with the mundane, and yet crazy Charlie gets his daughter to start to believe in this dream, the California of old.

Father and daughter come together and realize their dreams and are richer for both what they share, and what they discover.

Great movie! Too bad about what has happened to the now tarnished State of California, it's Golden no more.

4 out of 5 stars very watchable   December 28, 2009
    freiwill01 (Greenville, SC)
the storyline is simple, but it builds up very nicely and you don't feel bored at any point. Evan rachel pretty much carried the whole movie -- excellent performance. it's been awhile since i've seen michael douglas did a convincing act. Not oscar material but it's an enjoyable watch.

    3 out of 5 stars A Few Laughs...   June 1, 2009
Giordano Bruno (Wherever I am, I am.)
... and an adroit portrayal of a nut-case California libertarian dysfunctional father with a heart (or possibly a whole chest) of gold. If you've ever lived in California, especially southern, you're excused; you don't need to see it, you can just sit on a step-ladder in your patio and watch your neighbors. Otherwise, you might not feel too bad about wasting an hour-and-a-half on a film that aspires to be as wildly sardonic as a Coen Brothers movie, but ends up as sappy as Gidget.

Oh yeah, the young woman, Evan Rachel, deserves another chance, in a stronger role. But please, don't cast her as a precocious seventeen-year-old again!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome movie, decent picture.   May 1, 2009
    Jeremy A. Hunter (New Hampshire)
Movie is great, picture quality I'd give a 4, a few dark scenes with a good amount of grain.
