misunderstood. June 30, 2009 Sophia H. K. On the surface, this is a stoner comedy that keeps your attention with massive hijinx. But notice that people can't seem to agree whether it's hilarious if you're stoned or demonizing to loser potheads or just unfunny. The people who have said they found this movie depressing are on to something. It's also about social ineptitude and isolation, and a person with intelligence and charm who is hurting and losing control.
nearly peed my pans June 19, 2009 sweetpatotopie (NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I know it's not that appealing for those who have never smoked, but for those who have or have known those like Jane.....this movie will make you laugh straight from the belly. It could be better, but its pretty damn good compared to what else is out there, and for my money, much funnier than Harold and Kumar . Anna Faris is hysterical, a true comedienne,..I have loved her since Scary Movie and will continue to search out movies with her. She carries the whole film, which would not be even half as funny without here (and the same can be said of Scary Movie). I can't wait to see THe House Bunny. I have caught Smiley Face on cable several times already, and I have to say, as much as certain scenes get old, it still provokes laughter in certain parts, and that to me is the hallmark of a great comedic movie....if you still laugh after repeated veiwings. Love, love the part in the sausage factory, and with the prof's mom! So INSIDE!
Could Not Be More Unfunny June 13, 2009 YJM (Somewhere In The South) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
A stoner movie made by straight people to be enjoyed by stoners (maybe). If you were really baked out of your mind and you watched this movie who knows, maybe you might laugh a couple of times. However if you're straight I don't think it's going to work out well. Since I haven't smoked in 20 years it certainly didn't work well for me. It's painfully obvious that neither the director or the main star have ever been stoned or know what it's like to be stoned. The main character at times behaves as if she's drunk out of her mind, or having an intense acid trip, but at no time in the movie does she convince me she's stoned. At other times she just seems like a typical ditsy, airheaded, blond Hollyweird chick. As a matter of fact this movie would have been far more believable if it was about an airheaded blond chick in Hollywood on an intense acid trip. I am happy I saw this movie on cable for free, as I would have been pissed if I actually bought it.
Maybe it's funny if you're high April 5, 2009 Just another reader (Ann Arbor, MI, USA) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
The acting is atrocious. The plot (if you can call it that) is ridiculous. I did laugh at a few things, but overall, it was a complete waste of time. It might seem funny if you're high. On the other hand, so might a bag of Doritos.
Wonderful change of pace December 25, 2008 J. Fleck (Florida) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Smiley Face is a great, funny, and stimulating change of pace from the normal stoner comedies. Yeah, sure it's exaggerated, but the best ones ARE! ^_^ Wonderful, funny movie. Jane Lynch rocks it! Anna Faris is the new face of Comedy.
