From a visual standpoint, this CG feature starring the venerable '80s and '90s superheroes the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is nothing short of slam-bang; the computer animation has a scope and look that transcends both the original comics and animated series and the three live-action features that preceded it. Writer/director Kevin Munroe creates a striking animated world for the four heroes in a half-shell to live, play, and fight in, and the action sequences are occasionally breathtaking in their speed and complexity. But where TMNT stumbles is its bland plot, which picks up after the last of the live-action features with all four teen turtles in disarray, and abandons longtime villain Shredder in favor of an industrialist (well voiced by Patrick Stewart) who recruits the Foot Clan (including Karai, played by Zhang Ziyi) to revive thirteen ancient monsters to aid in his world domination scheme. It's a simple and fun story for kids, but longtime Turtles fans will miss the wry humor and smart sense of irony of the original comics (created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, who gets an executive producer credit here) in this storyline. Still, for most adolescent audience members, such concerns won't matter a whit in the face of the abundant action. --Paul Gaita

Imagi Entertainment's first full-length CGI animated movie before the recent Astro Boy film was this sequal to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live-action movie trilogy from the 90s. Despite what alot of people thought, the Critic included, this was not a followup to the 80s animated series, the 2000s animated series, or the abomination known as The Next Mutation.
Taking place a few years after the third movie, the Turtles have gone estranged. Leonardo left to go on a training mission to Central America. April O'Neil is now into trading relics, and while in Central America tracks down Leo, and lets him know how the other brothers are doing. Donatello and Michaelangelo each have secret part-time jobs to make ends meet. Raphael is doubling as a masked vigilante called Nightwatcher. Leo decides to finally return to New York. While this is going on, the Foot Clan is being lead Karai in the wake of Shredder's apparent death who are now working for the rich CEO, Max Winters. Winters is really an immortal ex-warrior king who three millenia ago opened a door to another dimension that unleashed thirteen monsters into our world. Winters is now trying to collect the monsters who are converging on New York, supposedly because the portal is going to reopen, although it threatens to release an endless army of monsters too. To help him, Winters collects the statue-fied remains of his former war buddies, and brings them to life as living stone. After getting involved in a fight with the Foot's attempt to capture one of the monsters, Leo grows tired of Raphael's stubborness to listen to his orders. He later finds out about Raphael's superheroing, and they have it out in a fight that's been building for a long time now(ask anyone whose read the original comics!). Leo gets captured by the Winters' stoneboys who want to fake him out as the last of the monsters so that they can keep their immortality. Raph gets Splinter, April, Casey Jones, and the other Turtles to raid Winters' tower while they are opening the vortex. The stone soldiers betray Winters as the Turtles and the Foot team up to stop them. They conveniently manage to find the last monster and send it into the vortex with the others. The Foot leaves promising a possible sequal, and Winters then disappears into pixie dust, while the Turtles decide to continue their crimefighting careers.
This was a good upgrade from the live-action movies, and most of the other adaptions of the comic, but it still carried the storyline from the original movies pretty well. The animation is most impressive, and the backgrounds and character designs are very articulate. I thought the movie was a great extension of the Turtles mythos, even though it might be a little unappealing to non-shellheads

I grew up with the Turtles when they were 1st released. I had EVERY toy, film, cd, ect released! Then i got old and got more into gurls and beer!;) The 3rd movie (turtles in time) was horrible. Thats about when i boxed everything up and ended the turtle phase after years of investing so much money into them. It was interesting to see they brought back the cartoons... Years later after the 1st version of the cartoon ended; my wife got me a free ticket to see the premiere movie on a Saturday morning. I didn't want to see it! I'm a movie buff; and i was scared i would just be too pissed off about it. It was refreshing to see all the kids dressed up in turtle costumes!
To my surprise, this movie made me laugh, jump, cry and breath with total excitement! My wife was just as hype, and she was not a fan of the turtles at all. THE MOVIE IN MY OPINION TOPPED 300, which came out the exact same year! Amazing how they bridged the old turtle movie storylines, and created this complete masterpiece! So many people thought i was crazy for promoting the movie until i got them to see it. I think it would have made more money if people showed more faith in the movie besides quickly shunning it due to the fact that it was a cartoon, and the new ones cant live up to the hype of the old ones.
Definitely a movie for the collection! Nickelodeon and Paramount have picked up the rights late this year in 2009. They better not mess up! Please make the movie in 2012 continue after TMNT!!! No Reboot of the film please!!! Reboot the series if you must; but not the film. you have more than enough to work with!!! Buy this on blu-ray!!!
Good Story, Great CGI, Outstanding Visuals November 4, 2009

A great movie that brings back the turtle nostalgia of the 90's when we were younger. I am no turtle fanatic, just a fan as a kid (and a die hard movie analyst). There is some serious CGI & Visuals in this movie if you know what to look for, some of the best out there. The story is not bad either; I would have liked to see more of Michaelangelo and Donatello. There are some good fighting scenes that are very detailed and visual as well. This movie is very different than the real movies of the 90's. In a way, it is more enjoyable than the real movies, which had a "poor puppetry" feel to them (except the first movie). If you have a top end TV (1080p 120hz +), Blu-Ray Player and good cables, you will enjoy the fine detail that went into this Blu-Ray movie. Otherwise, the regular DVD would probably be just as good.

My whole family enjoyed this movie have seen both standard and bluray versions if you can get it get the bluray no real special features but the picture is amazing safe for all age groups

Great flick for fans of the original cartoon form the late 80's/early 90's. Sure, the tone is lighter than the original source material (comic books), but it's still a fun ride. The sibling rivalry that plays throughout is a nice attempt at a mature storyline, and there's a fantastic fight scene between Leonardo and Raphael, but it's way too short. 'TMNT' is a great throwback to Saturday morning cartoons before they became too watered-down.
