Amazon.com Directed by Sidney Lumet (Serpico) and penned by Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin), this lavish 1978 adaptation of the Broadway hit The Wiz was the biggest production filmed in New York City up to that point, utilizing the newly revamped Astoria Studios and locations around the city. Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, and Ted Ross (reprising his Tony-winning role as the Lion) star in this Academy Award-nominated musical for the whole family. The Wiz is probably the grandest take on L. Frank Baum's classic tale The Wizard of Oz. The production team created sets with a sense of urban magic and spectacle: a New York subway station literally comes to life, and the massive plaza between the World Trade Center towers is transformed into the Emerald City, featuring nearly 400 dancers with three costume changes. Like all good musicals, the Quincy Jones arrangements are highly hummable long after viewing (especially the funky "Ease On Down the Road" and the inspirational "Brand New Day"). In an era before MTV, the camera stays nearly stationary as Ross and Lena Horne vocally soar through their numbers. Their stage-like performances successfully make the leap to film, making The Wiz a testament to their singing talents and star presence. The then-thirtysomething Ross raised some eyebrows playing the traditionally teenaged Dorothy, but she and her supporting cast (including Richard Pryor as the Wiz) carry the tunes with an infectious verve that will appeal to folks of all ages. --Shannon Gee

Disappointed February 7, 2010 Helpful I ordered this Wiz package for the CD not the DVD. When the ad said that the music was a bonus, I decided to order it. I thought it had all the songs from the movie. However, it didn't. The CD only had eight songs on it. The main song I was looking for wasn't on the CD. Hopefully, If you're looking for a specific song, call the company to check to see if it's on the CD so that you're not disappointed. Other than that, it's nice.
The Wiz February 6, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) In the classic story based on the smash Broadway musical, Dorothy is a shy 24-year-old Harlem kindergarten teacher who is brought by a snowstorm to the mysterious Land of Oz, a sprawling, decaying, nightmarish, and dangerous megalopolis that resembles the physical characteristics of New York City. The re-telling of the tale includes various urban settings, extreme sadness and melancholy, and features themes of rising above one's background and the expectations of others. "The Wiz" is a fun movie to watch, and it contains a number of known (Motown) celebrities. This movie is a sheer delight.
All time favorite February 4, 2010 Martha M. Fordham (Flint, MI) I bought this movie for my 4 year old. He loves this movie and has watched it over and over for years! This movie replaced the last DVD that he lost. He loves the scarecrow and is so impressed that Michael Jackson looks so different in this movie. I love the awesome talent of Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. I wish Michael had done more movies.
Now that I've grown up... February 3, 2010 Lakeisha Harrod Now that I've grown up, I can appreciate this movie for the phenomenon that it was! This DVD presents the movie in a more sharper and clearer picture than before...it was produced in 1978. I must have been about 8 or 9 when I saw it and never understood the beauty of it. Being a little girl, I always preferred Judy Garland's verion of The Wizard of Oz. Now that I'm a 31 year-old adult, I can really appreciate the urban version of The Wizard of Oz. With Diana Ross as Dorothy, Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, and Nipsey Russel as the Tinman, this movie should have won an Oscar. I highly recommend it.
This is definitely Great Show! January 21, 2010 A. Mak (Malaysia) The Wiz is a great show, my family watched it over and over again and we are still excited watching it! Besides the beautiful art; acting; dancing; singing; musics, the story is so fun and motivating. I love this show!
