The third installment in the massively popular film series based on Capcom's zombie horror/science fiction games, Resident Evil: Extinction brings the world to an end, not with a whimper but a bang, as Milla Jovovich's Alice pits her bio-organic superskills against armies of the undead in a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. Also on hand is a more grown-up version of the games' Claire Redfield (played by Heroes' Ali Larter), who leads a convoy of humans (among them Resident Evil vets Oded Fehr and Mike Epps, who reprise their roles as Carlos and LJ, as well as newcomers Ashanti and Spencer Locke) in search of sanctuary; meanwhile, sinister Umbrella Corporation scientist Dr. Sam Isaacs (Iain Glen) seeks a cure for the zombie virus outbreak via Alice's blood, which he taps via a lab full of clones. Subtlety has never been the Resident Evil series' strong suit, but it's hard to argue against Extinction's breakneck pace and impressive CG special effects; director Russell Mulcahy (the Highlander series) lends a lot of verve to the proceedings, and the script by producer Paul W.S. Anderson pulls in agreeable touches from The Road Warrior and Day of the Dead. A hit during the summer of 2007, Extinction should please series devotees and action-horror fans alike; the DVD includes commentary by Mulcahy, Anderson, and co-producer Jeremy Bolt, as well as several making-of featurettes, and a glimpse at the next entry in the Resident Evil franchise, the CG-only Degeneration. -- Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars The Resident Evil films are FAR From "Extinct"   January 22, 2010

From the start, this film had me completely surrendered to it's gripping narrative, fantastic cinematography and hugely entertaining action scenes. Unlike the first two films in the franchise, "Extinction" brings the next gen gore of the video games "Resident Evil 4 and 5" to the big screen. No more fast cuts, discreet angles or dark lenses... This is a hardcore, zombie killing action-fest. Aside from this new development, the characters are all written with much more attention to characterization and emotion. There are many scenes in the film where you find yourself GENUINELY caring what happens to the characters. On top of everything I've mentioned, the musical score by Charlie Clouser WAY outclasses the previous two scores and is both effective and well produced. If I had one negative thing to say about this film it's that it ended as soon as it did!

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic, silly acting. Especially from the 'women warriors"   January 14, 2010

This is one of those movie series in which it becomes progressively worse with each installment. Not much I can say, but the women are atypical stereotypes of the aggressive females; long on angst and short on acting skills. Laughable plots and more laughable are the actors trying to reach out "acting". If you like sci-fi action flicks (there are boring sequences), this is pretty good. But don't ever expect Oscar performances in these movies. I guess no one really does.

5 out of 5 stars It's Ultra Crazy Good and Suspenseful Action Horror in This Third Installment in the Resident Evil Series   January 14, 2010

Alice (Milla Jovovich) wanders the Nevada desert alone, flying under the radar of the Umbrella Corporation.

It's been five years since the deadly T-virus outbreak. The world is all but in shambles. Alice believes that only Alaska is the last safe place on Earth. An old journal she found with a six-month-old radio transcription told her so.

On her journey, Alice comes across a small caravan of survivors headed up by Claire (Ali Larter) that also happens to be carrying along some old friends: Slater (Matthew Marsden) and L.J. (Mike Epps).

She convinces them to head north to Alaska, and so they embark, fighting off the dead at every turn, even undead crows that have been transformed from feasting on zombie flesh.

Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen) wants Alice back under his control as he focuses on perfecting her as a weapon against the undead. Except, once Alice catches on, she manages to disable their system of control over her and escapes with Claire and the others.

All hope lost, and having been bitten by one of the dead himself, Dr. Isaacs uses the antivirus on himself . . . but in a different way, creating a result neither he nor Alice expected.

It's ultra crazy good and suspenseful action horror in this third installment in the Resident Evil series.

Wow. I mean, man oh man, I love this movie. So, so good. I'm a sucker for roadside horror and sleepy towns. This movie has both. The zombies? Pure gruesome since most of them have been rotting for five years as they wander around devouring the rest of the living.

The zombie crows were a nice touch. So, so many of them. Swarms. That's the thing I always tell people about zombies. One zombie's not so bad. Get a whole mess of them together and they're scary as all get out. Same for zombie crows. There was enough here to turn the sky black. Freaky.

The development of Alice's powers was cool and though her telekinesis might seem kind of outlandish to some, it's portrayed well here and done with the utmost serious and not used as a cop-out to get her out of a jam.

I felt bad for her as well when she saw all those clones of herself rotting out in the desert sun. That'd be heartbreaking, upsetting and angering for anyone. I'm glad she gave Dr. Isaacs his due.

The ending raises a ton of questions for the forthcoming Resident Evil: Afterlife. I'm eager to see how they deal with that army of Alices without it coming off goofy or repetitive.

This movie's score was also spectacular, the hard beat of the drums and dark, raunchy guitar giving it a very awesome grittiness that adds to the whole post-apocalyptic feel.

Check this flick out. It's hardcore, loaded with gore and just down right fantastic.

    Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Starts becoming less a zombie film and more a B-grade magic show   January 6, 2010

Resident evil originated from a survival horror video game, where unlike a first person shooter, the emphasis was on conservation of ammo, and puzzle solving.

As the series progressed, say by RE Code Veronica, the creature designs got more and more interesting and the plots more enveloping.

So did this translate to the last movie adaption?

Instead we get a bizarre decision to make our main character Mila (who is hot at least) to develop increasingly powerful psychic abilities. Abilities that allow her to essentially destroy any number of baddies with a grimace.

You don't need to have a literary degree to know that giving your good guy all the superpowers doesn't make for good movie watching.
