David (Hard Candy) Slade directs this nerve-jangling adaptation of the popular graphic novel series about a mob of vampires that overruns a remote Alaskan town in the grip of 30 Days of Night. Josh Hartnett and Melissa George are the film's de facto heroes (he's the stoic town sheriff and she's his estranged fire-marshal wife) but the picture's real MVP is Slade's camera (along with cinematographer Jo Willems), which careens across the town's snowy landscape to detail the vampires' horrific assault on its inhabitants, which are quickly pared down to a hardy few. The script, co-written by the source material's creator, Steve Niles, along with Pirates of the Caribbean's Stuart Beattie and Hard Candy's Brian Nelson), proudly wears its influences on its crimson-stained sleeve (Bram Stoker's Dracula, natch, but also Salem's Lot, Night of the Living Dead, and John Carpenter's version of The Thing) and boils down the graphic novels to a series of tense and extremely bloody standoffs between Harnett and George's band of survivors and the vaguely Slavic and ferocious bloodsuckers led by Marlow (a feral and frightening Danny Huston). And if the characters seem stock and the finale begs suspension of disbelief, the set pieces leading up to it are sufficiently supercharged with suspense and violence to please most horror fans. Standouts in the supporting cast are Ben Foster as the film's Renfield figure and Mark Boone Junior; the disturbing score by Brian Reitzell also merits a mention. --Paul Gaita

    1 out of 5 stars don't waste your time   February 25, 2010

This movie starts out with a lot of promise--that it doesn't deliver on. What great vampires. Perfect setting. The movie is too disjointed and looks to have been edited badly. If you are familiar with the graphic novel this will do. But otherwise don't waste you time.

2 out of 5 stars Hunger and pain   February 25, 2010

How do you turn 30 Days of Night a beautifully laid out graphic novel into a somewhat less than mediocre movie? Good question and, that's not my only big question. Where do vampires shop for clothes? Shoes? Who cuts their hair? Do they use electric shavers or do they use blades? What are they talking about when they are not hissing - they seem to have a language. Is there a vampire mating season? When a baby vampire is born, what do the parents do to properly socialize their kids? How cold does it get near the North Pole in the winter? What do these vampires do in the Summer or in a regular day? Especially in places like Alaska where there can be 30 days of non-stop daylight? Do vampires have hobbies, regular jobs or all they do is obsess themselves with eating and hissing at each other? How many humans must a vampire consume in an average day/year and... given the vampires continuous appetite for fresh human blood, how does our government react to the shrinking taxpayer population, especially in a place like Alaska where they don't have too many of them to begin with?

These were some of the thoughts I was thinking why trying, unsuccessfully, to pay attention to this movie's... action. For what it's worth, the story is that of small group of survivors on a far North Alaskan town that is in the dark for one full month that's taken over by hungry vampires who try to kill everybody and even consume a little blood in a piranha-like eating frenzy. I was asking myself all of those questions because these vampires are shown as a different species - by their looks, no possibility of easy full human-to-vampire conversion - so one can't help but wondering how do they pick their clothes. And, given that most of them vampire males in the movie are clean shaved (unlike the human males who are either bearded or unshaved) and they have nice haircuts, such questions beg themselves. And, then... what are they talking about all day long? They seem to have some rudiments of language but, since all we see them doing is hissing, staring at each other or scratching/biting people, how do they grow up, how do their leaders get an education - I am asking because this group's leader appears to know something about his species' history from the past few centuries. Not to mention little details such as where exactly or approximately did dozens of hungry vampires come from or what were their plans after the 30-day night-only ended? Oh, and one more thing - global warming notwithstanding, isn't Alaska, North of the polar circle, terribly cold in the winter? Because open-collar shirts an no mittens maybe worked for the vampires but the humans weren't that warmly dressed either and they didn't seem to mind.

With so many outstanding and unanswered questions, talking about the movie is not easy because there's not much to talk about. As hard as the actors worked at turning a bad script into something remotely plausible - and they did try their best - you just can't make a passable movie when there is so little to work with. Vampires are obsessed with eating, humans seem to try to survive but, several times, after they find a shelter from where they could wait out the hungry and evil creatures they talk each other into yet another risky move that, invariably, gets a few more of them killed. The vampires themselves, it's not clear why they insist on staying in town for 30 days/nights after they quickly kill nearly everyone in sight and, again... where do they go from there? Where have they been for the past few hundred years?

This movie fails the viewer at 'task one' which is 'suspension of disbelief'. Instead of allowing myself to be scared by the intimidating-looking, blood-thirsty beasts and rooting for the hopeless humans, I kept asking myself all those questions (see first paragraph) and only finding reasons to laugh at the sometimes comic inconsistencies in the awkward story-telling. The somewhat innovative ending is nice but the one-on-one battle scene between the main human and the vampire chief that precedes seems to be inserted for no particular reason - since it doesn't actually end the movie - and kind of spoils the real ending that follows.

Two stars are well deserved for the actors' effort where almost everything else was a failure. I would probably watch this movie on TV if I had nothing else to do and nothing else was on but I wouldn't go as far as actually buying it.

I love this movie for a start, i have it my DVD format. But recently i bought its on Blu-ray. I am glad i did!
Really impressed with Blu-ray sharpness and colors, this movie got fantastic make-ups and special effects, they even built the whole town for this movie.
A must have for all horror or Sci-Fic fans.

3 out of 5 stars Not a great movie, but at least the vampires behave, well, vampirically   January 25, 2010
    Fry Boy (Orlando, FL USA)
This movie probably won't register as one of the top ten vampire films, but it does have some redeeming qualities. First, the vampires are absolutely bloodthirsty. The scene were they take over the town is downright horrific, running down screaming humans, spraying blood all over. Harsh. Second, the behavior of the survivors is very believable, with them all being adequately terrified and unwilling to act as you might expect real people to be in such a situation. Third, it takes place in the snow which, for me, usually warrants a half-star.

I'd bet money that the screenwriter ripped off that "Tales from the Crypt" story with Ewan McGregor (or is it MacGregor?). Same sort of scenario.

Good for a night in, but definitely not for kids.
