Amazon.com Taking cues from Beauty and the Beast and Cyrano de Bergerac, director Mark Palanksy debuts with a slight, if fanciful confection. Produced by Reese Witherspoon and written by Leslie Caveny, Penelope begins with the phrase, "Once upon a time...," making it clear the proceedings owe more to fantasy than reality. Due to a family curse, Ricci's sweet-natured heiress sports a pig snout instead of a normal nose. Since surgery isn't an option--it would sever her carotid artery--her parents (Christopher Guest favorite Catherine O'Hara and an underused Richard E. Grant) hide her from the world for 25 years. Penelope can only break the spell through "one who will love her faithfully," but none of the local bluebloods will have her. One fateful day, while her face is hidden, she meets musician-turned-gambler Max (Atonement's James McAvoy in a winning performance). Sparks fly, until she finds he's only cozying up to her on orders from tabloid reporter Lemon (The Station Agent's Peter Dinklage), so Penelope runs away from home. The city she enters looks much like modern-day London--Amélie's Michel Amathieu served as cinematographer--except most everyone speaks with an American accent (then again, the film is a fable). The aspiring horticulturist befriends spunky courier Annie (Witherspoon) and reconnects with Max, who harbors secrets of his own. Once people become accustomed to her unconventional looks, Penelope's future starts to brighten. Like Enchanted, Palanksy's first feature gives the romantic comedy a refreshing--and empowering--fairytale twist. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Adorable and touching February 5, 2010 Elizabeth Belyeu I'll be honest, my roommate forced me to watch this, and I expected it to be pretty lame. Instead, I ADORED it. The look of the movie is awesome--lots of color and texture. The feel of it is a bit surrealistic, like a Roald Dahl book, which I don't always like, but I think they did it just right this time. The hero and heroine are utterly charming and their love story is just beautiful. It feels very real, not just a series of romantic cliches. Also, Penelope's pig-nose is very well done; it's startling, and you can understand why so many people react badly to it, but it's done in such a way that you get used to it, and it even becomes sort of cute. It would have been easy for the movie's creators to either make it hideous or negligible, and either one would have damaged the story.
This movie is sweet and charming in every way. I highly recommend it to everyone.
Penelope January 25, 2010 Eileen Wade (St. Louis, MO USA) Penelope is a great movie! I think that it is a must see for any girl in this day and age. The central message of the story is to be happy with yourself and love yourself. Many thanks to Reese Witherspoon and Christina Ricci for trying to instill this idea and message for girls of all ages. Of course it does not hurt that James Mcavoy is one of the pricipal characters. Highly recommended.
fun movie! January 7, 2010 M. Reagan (Western New York) Penelope is a feel good, silly, fun movie to share. My 19 year old daughter wanted this dvd after seeing the movie. She was thrilled to trick her Dad into watching the dvd. Enjoyable family movie time.
Adorable! January 2, 2010 Amy Oden (Pasadena, CA, United States) This is one of the cutest, most refreshing films I've seen in a long time; I only wish I'd seen it sooner! Fabulous cast, great acting, and fresh air breathed into the age-old story of not judging a book by its cover. Brought to us by the adorable Reese Witherspoon, who makes a fun, off-beat appearance late in the film, this is an entertaining exploration into the shallowness of vanity and the depths of love, which makes you laugh, think, and feel good when it's finished.
Get over yourselves people! December 18, 2009 Lindsey Hamilton (Sacramento, CA) Cliche this, cliche that, geeze folks, this movie wasn't going for the cutting edge, Oscar winning fairytale. It is a sweet movie with a sweet message. Catherine O'Hara is fabulously funny, and Christina Ricci, whose acting I am not fond of, is actually likeable in this movie. The ideals of beauty (both male and female) step away from the mainstream Megan Foxes and Zac Efrons. My 2 and 5-year old daughters fell in love with the movie as did I, but I guess watching it through your children's eyes suppresses our own adult cynicism and expectations of entertainment. I'm always happy to sit down and watch it with them.
