Touching and inspirational, The Final Season, based on a true story, is one of those baseball movies in which the game is synonymous with life itself—if not actually bigger than life itself. Sean Astin (star of one of the most beloved sports films, Rudy) is solid and likeable as Kent Stock, an assistant baseball coach at Norway High School in an Iowa farming community. Working under local legend Jim Van Scoyoc (Powers Boothe in a particularly golden performance), who led Norway to 19 straight state championships, Stock is happy to lend a temporary hand. But he finds his destiny altered when Van Scoyoc is pushed aside by a school board determined to close Norway High and stifle dissent by undercutting the team's chances of a 20th victory. On the wrongheaded assumption that Stock can't motivate kids, the coaching job is offered to him, and he takes to it immediately in his low-key way. Despite early struggles, Stock inspires his players to think about what's important in Norway's last shot at greatness: How do they want to be remembered?

Directed by David Mickey Evans (The Sandlot), The Final Season is thick with love for baseball, from extensive scenes of practice sessions to lyrical patches of dialogue about the way the characters of men are reflected in how they perform on the field. A Copland-esque music score reminds one that The Final Season is a piece of American folklore, and a strong support cast including Tom Arnold as one of Van Scoyoc's former players, Michael Angarano as a troubled rebel, and Rachel Leigh Cook as Stock's love interest make this film a pleasure even for non-sports-loving fans. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars I think I've seen this movie before   June 6, 2009

This is a blatant rip-off of "Hoosiers" translated from Indiana high school basketball to Iowa high school baseball. Against all odds the tiny rural school wins the state championship - that's the basic plot. Beyond that, there are so many plot details and visual details that are just plain copied. If you haven't seen "Hoosiers" you will probably enjoy this movie because you won't realize how much it lacks originality. If you have seen "Rudy" you will be constantly distracted by observing that Sean Astin has gotten so fat that he is barely recognizable. Notwithstanding these gripes, it's fairly entertaining.

2 out of 5 stars God bless small towns in Iowa   March 30, 2009

This movie offers a compassionate insight into the politics and pride of small towns. I was compelled to watch because it's about my mom's hometown, Norway, Iowa. While we can talk about all of us in America having the same core values, it's interesting to see how the values are expressed in small towns versus cities.

5 out of 5 stars Great, Solid Family Movie   March 22, 2009

Entertaining baseball movie featuring Sean Astin. Astin becomes an assistant coach for a down on their luck high school baseball team. Even with the usual underdog to top acheivement story. The story is based on a true situation of a small town high school whose only claim to fame is a number one baseball team. The usual greedy corporation wants the town to go bankrupt for its own gains. Astin becomes coach and fights the greed mongers for one final season to win. The climactic ending and finale will have you standing and cheering. The end will bring a tear to your eyes. Great family viewing on perseverence and honor. My hat's off to Tom Arnold. I have always enjoyed his acting style and this movie proves he is under rated and truly talented with heart.

    4 out of 5 stars Feel-good sports story   January 24, 2009
    Karen Potts (Lake Jackson, Texas)
This movie is based on the true story of a small town in Iowa which produced a large number of top baseball players and which won the Iowa State 1-A Baseball Championship an amazing 20 times. Things are going well for the small town of Norway, until the state and local school boards decide to consolidate their school with another district's high school. The citizens complain that their baseball heritage is important to the social and economic future of their town, but their pleas fall on deaf ears. The school board removes the popular and successful baseball coach for Norway's final season and replaces him with a man who spent half of a season as Norway's assistant coach and the rest of his career coaching girls' volleyball. The story is enjoyable and inspiring and is well told in this movie.
