Taken from his family and plunged into a sinister world he doesn't understand Gibson must not only save himself from the assassins who must destroy him to protect their secret but uncover who and what is behind the horrible things happening to him. For a movie about cloning, it's only appropriate that The 6th Day, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is instilled with a strong sense of déjà vu, namely from Arnold's previous "Who am I?" outing, Total Recall. In that movie, Arnold is a normal Joe who discovers that his entire reality has been co-opted by an evil conspiracy, and has to take his life back by force. The same premise applies here for Roger Spottiswoode's clever if overlong sci-fi thriller--Arnold thinks he's a regular guy leading a regular life, until a twist of fate puts him on the lam from a vast conspiracy that's replaced him with a clone. While he's trying to evade the evil genetics corporation--and its trendy, deadly, clone-friendly assassins (who don't care how many times they're killed: there's more where that came from)--his double is snuggling at home with his wife and daughter. And new legislation outlaws the existence of human clones, so somebody's got to go. But who gets to be live and who gets to be the dead Memorex man?

Why does said genetics corporation want to clone people? How does the kindly scientist (Robert Duvall) fit in? What's the mystery behind the slick billionaire (Tony Goldwyn) who runs everything? It's all kind of irrelevant in the end, as long as it provides a chance for Arnold to indulge in some energetic mayhem and explosive action. What distinguishes The 6th Day is its sneaky, humorous--and chilling--look at the near future, taking everyday technological advances and turning them up just a couple notches, envisioning an era with cloned pets, virtual girlfriends, and computers running most everything, from the refrigerator to your car. Arnold is supposed to be a throwback to the "real" world--you can tell because he cherishes his vintage, navigation-system-free Cadillac--but as usual, he just brings his behemoth presence to the role and not much else. Still, he's a friendly enough hero, and he rolls with the punches (literally) all the way through to the end. Too bad the film overstays its welcome by about half an hour--a little shorter and it could have been a breezy sci-fi/action romp. With scene stealers Michael Rooker, Sarah Wynter, and Rod Rowland as the trio of cloned assassins who always come back--again and again. --Mark Englehart

3 out of 5 stars If you like Arnold you'll like this movie...   March 9, 2010
    Andrew Ellington (Mulholland Drive)
`The 6th Day' is a little long, and it has been done better since (both `Minority Report' and `The Island' took aspects of this film and embellished them to far greater and more effective heights) but in the end, if you are looking for an engaging and exciting popcorn muncher, this film will do the trick.

The film feels very familiar, even back upon its release. Arnold plays a `regular guy' (if that is possible) who finds himself trying to take back his life after he is cloned and his clone takes over his house. Since human cloning is outlawed if Arnold (I mean ADAM) doesn't prove he's the `real' human then he will be killed. There is conspiracy, obviously, but in the end it doesn't really matter (when does it ever, in this genre at least). The only important thing here is the action sequences, and this one delivers a few good ones.

I don't really get the whole `this one will make you think' theory. As far as chilling depictions of our future, I always found `Minority Report' to be the more intellectually stimulating, but then again, I don't buy into either depiction as an accurate example of what our future will be. I mean, every time the future is discussed in these types of films things just seem far too `off' to be real.

This is why I totally love what Godard did all the way back in 1965 when he took a realistic approach to `Alphaville'.

    Alas...

Arnold is not an actor. I mean, really...he is just a prop in a sea of explosions, but he knows how to sell it so good for him. He doesn't do anything remotely special here, but he doesn't botch anything up either. I happen to think that Michael Rooker is an actor and I actually think that he steals his scenes here, but that's a give in. He's got some real talent in him (just watch what he does in `Henry'...I mean he just blew me away) but this is a throwaway role in a throwaway film.

I still don't know what Robert Duvall was doing here.

So, should you see this movie? I'd say sure. I mean, it's certainly NOT the best in the genre, and it has some major faults (the film is roughly thirty minutes too long) but it is fun to a point and isn't a major waste of time. I can't really see watching this more than once (I did, which concerns me) but if you haven't seen it then you might want to check it out, especially if you're a fan of the breed of action film Arnold is famous for dishing out.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly for XFL fans...One Liners help, like Commando, but not quite enough   June 4, 2009

    Another of 'Arnuld's' thick, lispy
    heavily Austrian accented Sci-Fi
flicks that takes a stab at more
    Pro-Evolution gibberish. Note that
this movie was made in 2000, it already
was gabbering about the upcoming (flop)
XFL. A good cast is sort of wasted in
    this coputer generated film. Humour
helps but like Commando, not enough.
Still I can't believe this Masonic
clown became 'The Gov.' of California.
But then, it is the land of fruits and
    nut(z)ies...

4 out of 5 stars To Clone Or Not To Clone   May 6, 2009
    Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA)
A good movie with very sharp visuals and excellent surround sound, this was another entertaining Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle. The action isn't overdone and the humor is subtle. It also looks super on Blu-Ray. You can't say that on every high-def disc, but this is a good one (and at a good price.)

"To clone human beings or not to clone" is the question here and the topic of the movie. For one of the few times in film history, Hollywood actually gives the right moral message.

The film, however, succumbs at the ending action to the typical "Rambo mentality," where the good guys couldn't hit if they threw an H-bomb at them. However, most of the action scenes in the film are well-done.
Arnold's thick accent doesn't lend credibility to his particular role here but the villains in here are all effectively portrayed.

2 out of 5 stars On his way out...   April 21, 2009

The later films schwarzenneger made towards the end of his acting career prior to becoming Governor of California werent too bad, I mean they were no Terminator or Predator, but they were watchable. The 6th day had some great effects and action and some kind of moral story about the dangers of human cloning in the future, but again pretty mediocre. As i've said before in prior Arnold movie reviews if you're a Schwarzenneger fan as i am and want to complete your Arnold collection, get it, if not you can do better for your money....or worse, lol.

    5 out of 5 stars Hero with a heart   February 4, 2009
    Loves Movies!
"The 6th Day" is worth owning. It's a great non-stop action sci-fi thriller. Arnold is convincing as a hero with a heart. He loves his family and will go to any lengths to keep them. If you like movies about cloning, this film is a definite must see.
