Amazon.com To some, Lars and the Real Girl will play as comedy; to others, tragedy. Though Craig Gillespie (Mr. Woodcock) allows Lars Lindstrom (a mustachioed Ryan Gosling, miles away from Half Nelson) a happy ending, the road is far from smooth. This rumpled Midwesterner couldn't be more miserable. His brother, Gus (Paul Schneider, All the Real Girls), and sister-in-law, Karin (Emily Mortimer, Lovely and Amazing), fall over themselves to cheer him up, but Lars cannot be moved; he's been like that since childhood. Then a porn-addicted co-worker hips him to the lifelike Real Doll. The next thing everyone knows, Lars has a new girlfriend named Bianca. She's from Brazil, she's shy, and she uses a wheelchair. She's also made of silicon. (Because Lars is a devout Christian, hanky-panky is out of the question.) Since he's finally emerging from his shell, his doctor, Dagmar (Patricia Clarkson), advises Gus and Karin to play along with the "delusion." Soon the whole town, including Margo (Kelli Garner), who harbors a not-so-secret crush on her officemate, gets in on the action, forcing Lars to rejoin the human race or crawl deeper into psychosis. Written by Six Feet Under's Nancy Oliver, Lars and the Real Girl is built around such a preposterous premise, it's hard to know whether to laugh or cry. Fortunately, the actors play it straight. Gosling does his best to make Lars sympathetic, but Schneider and Mortimer, fully convincing in their concern, are the true heart and soul of this odd little film. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The DVD was poor quality and would pause and skip. February 7, 2010 A. Whalen The DVD was poor quality and would pause and skip. Even though it was advertised as being in it's original wrapper, obviously it was still of a lesser quality than what is available in a store.
Second rate quality should be advertised as such.
"Lars and the Real Girl' is disarmingly sweet and quietly affecting January 16, 2010 Jane Moore This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. It is the gospel in action as a whole town decides collectively to help a young man with a mental illness. I wish they had picked a different title as I think at first glance people will think it is a one-trick comedy when in fact it is so much more. The acting is brilliant. It is also nice to finally see a movie not only champion mental therapy but actually dive in deep into how psychology works and how loved ones and friends can play a role in recovery. This is a love story of a different kind that touches the soul.
What`s Wrong With You People ??? January 15, 2010 4-Legged Defender (ATL. GA.) 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
You don`t need me to review this movie, there are 168 reviews posted at the time I typed this tirade, and I can`t stop shaking my head in disbelief. Over 155 reviewers thought this movie was tender, touching, compassionate and caring, etc.etc. - this was the most painful and insipid waste of time I`ve ever endured! Rarely do movies I don`t enjoy infuriate me the way this one did - I came here sure I`d get kicks finding dozens if not hundreds of reviews chastizing this flick similiarly, but no chance. I find out I`ve somehow ended up in the Bizarro World, and everyone thinks this is art but me... Now, I`ve always been a bit removed from the general movie-going public in my likes and dislikes of popular films, but this is friggin` scary. WHAT`S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE???? This movie was insulting to anyone with a brain, I don`t care how mentally challenged you are. Let me ask you a question - a good friend or relative shows up at your door with a blow-up date and treats it like a real girl, are you gonna play along, run around the house looking for the 'candid cameras' that will appear on next week`s episode of 'PUNKD', or are you gonna ask him politely to share his drugs with everybody because these are obviously some excellent psychedelics, or will you beat his demented ass and throw him out for fouling up your dinner plans while your wife calls the local Looney Bin requesting guys w/ white jackets and large butterfly nets ??? I can`t believe that even ONE person in this flick humored this freak, let alone the entire town play along and embrace his apparant lunacy - who does this benefit? Some reviewer thought it was sweet that the entire town came together to fortify this madness and "look after one of their own" - I`m thinking it opens up a whole new arguement for Eugenics - WHAT`S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE????
Strange but very real January 9, 2010 O. Hassanain (NJ) as I watched this I kept wondering "can this happen". In today's world we have man problems that face our society. Lars become delusional when he hits bottom and seems to disconnect from the world around him. He embraces this "doll" and becomes attached to her as if she were real. But when the real world comes knocking on his door his actions are very interesting. Throughout the movie you start to feel for Lars and pray that he gets through his situation. It's great to see how well the entire town comes together to help Lars overcome his struggle to find happiness. The ending was just perfect.
Very Different! December 28, 2009 Stephanie Rodriguez This movie has Ryan Goseling in a totally different way. Its quirky and funny. I have not seen a movie like this before I really enjoyed it.
