Amazon.com The List, a supernatural thriller, begins at the close of the Civil War, when a cabal of Southern businessmen formed a secret pact to preserve their personal wealth. A century and a half later, a frustrated young lawyer named Renny Jacobsen (Chuck Carrington, JAG) discovers he's been cut out of his estranged father's will--but when he opens a locked box, he discovers a far more complicated inheritance that leads him to meet an attractive woman named Jo Johnston (Hilarie Burton, One Tree Hill) and the charming but mephistophelean Desmond Larochette (played by the charming but mephistophelean Malcolm McDowell), who leads the descendants of the original cabal. As Jacobsen learns how his history is tied up in this ominous list of names, he finds himself torn between his morals and his craving for money. Based on the Christian novel by Robert Whitlow, The List does its best to make the most of a low budget, focusing on character and story rather than special effects or visual style. Ultimately it's more about the power of prayer than being scary, though McDowell does his best to foster a sinister atmosphere. While Christian viewers may find the ending affirming, nonbelievers may find it a bit anticlimactic. --Bret Fetzer

Bravo Hilarie Burton! May 11, 2009 Mickey Excellant job by young Hilarie Burton. Way to go "P.Sawyer"! Good movie with a good twist.
It's OK March 15, 2009 S. Peek (Rocky Mountains, USA) Several years ago I had read the book from which the movies was based and thought it was quite good. As is so often the case, the movie does not live up to the novel. The story is set in South Carolina. It is about a group of wealthy Southern landowners who formed a cabal at the end of the Civil War. The idea was to protect their wealth. The money is passed through primogeniture. There appears to be a real dark side involving those on 'the list'. Most of the tale focuses around Renny Jacobsen (Chuck Carrington), a young lawyer who has just become part of the group after the death of his father. At the same time, a young woman, Jo Johnston (Hilarie Burton) also inherits her father's position. This has some spiritual themes that are rather vague and not well connected. There are other gaps as well such as the romance between Renny and Jo. Overall this is a mediocre film. It had great potential, but for some reason, the movie version does not live up to it.
Abysmal February 3, 2009 C. Scheller (Louisiana) Absolutely abysmal. There are no less than three fades in the beginning of the movie--fades with no purpose, mind you. It feels like someone who flunked film school directed the movie. I became bored several times throughout the movie, and probably would have turned it off if I didn't have my laptop to occupy me. All in all, a complete waste of time. Felt like a bad made-for-TV movie.
An interesting story, but will appeal to only a limited audience. January 21, 2009 No one of consequence (Maineville, Ohio) "The List" is an interesting blend of southern charm, secret societies, sinister plotting, historical intrigue, corruption and betrayal. It is also predominantly a Christian morality tale about unchecked ambition, spiritual warfare, self-sacrifice, redemption and the power of prayer. These latter elements will be lost on many viewers, although from a Christian perspective it carries a refreshing if cautionary message. Even so, it tends to get a little smarmy toward the end. As to the production itself, Chuck Carrington and Hilarie Burton were passable in the lead roles, with Malcolm McDowell doing yeoman's work as the devilishly charming pseudo-gentleman Desmond Larochette. Most of the supporting acting was so-so, with the Mrs. Stokes character seeming to me to be a bit caricatured. The storyline was at least engaging if not entirely credible, but one wonders why Jo never seemed to have anywhere else to be but by Renny's side. Overall, for Christian viewers this would probably rate a B or B-, whereas non-Christian viewers would probably give it a high D or low C. For my own part, it was enjoyable enough but it's not worth a second viewing.
Great Movie January 11, 2009 FreenChrist (PA) We loved this movie! Kevin Downes has done a great job once again! Every aspect of the movie helped create suspence and the action flowed very well. The characters were well developed and support roles were very effective. Watch this movie!
