    Editorial Reviews:

    Product Description
The next chapter finds Rambo recruited by missionaries to protect them during a humanitarian aid effort on behalf of the persecuted Karen people of Burma. After the missionaries are taken prisoner by Burmese soldiers, Rambo gets a second impossible job: rescue the missionaries in the midst of a civil war.

If you've been wondering what ever happened to ex-Green Beret superwarrior John Rambo since he singlehandedly shot up a Pacific Northwest town (First Blood, 1982), returned to the jungles of 'Nam to free U.S. POWs held long after war's end (Rambo: First Blood Part II, 1985), and interrupted the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan long enough to blow lots of stuff up and rescue his old commandant from the Reds (Rambo III, 1988), then Rambo (2008) is for you. Without so much as a IV to dilute the brand name, Rambo--which is what most of us called the second, most iconic film in the series--may aspire to open a new era for a pop legend. But it's a thoroughly mechanical attempt to reanimate a franchise that, absent the anger, frustration, and self-loathing of the post-Vietnam years, has no meaning or purpose. For some time now Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) has been putt-putting along the Thai-Burmese border in a longboat, catching exotic snakes to sell. As for the 60-year civil war in Burma between the brutal government and the Karen independence movement, he ignores it. Enter a party of American missionaries whose dewy blond spokeswoman (Dexter's Julie Benz) asks Rambo to haul them upriver so that they can bring medical aid to the insurgents. After the requisite number of monosyllabic refusals, he does. Soon afterward the do-gooders are in a world of hurt, and he's summoned to lead a squad of mercenaries on a rescue mission.

As storytelling, the latest Rambo is the most bare-bones of the bunch. Rambo has little to say, so it's especially galling that Stallone, as director and co-writer, obliges him to have essentially the same conversation at three different points (the final distillation: "Live for nothing or die for something"). The Burmese army goons seem in competition to commit the most hideous atrocity (e.g., child skull-crushing underfoot), the better to justify the eventual, lovingly protracted spectacle of them being eviscerated by high-powered weaponry. Although shot in Thailand, the movie has mostly been photographed in brown, reducing any particular sense of place but, perhaps, perversely increasing our gratitude for the splashes of purple whenever hot metal tatters flesh. --Richard T. Jameson

3 out of 5 stars It's nice to see somebody take on the Burmese army   July 4, 2009
    D. J. Nardi (Washington, DC)
After following the situation in Burma for years, it sure was nice to see somebody take on the Burmese army! Unlike the past movies, this one isn't exactly Rambo versus a huge army - he has help from some mercenaries. Still, they manage to do a good deal of damage. If only they could do that in real life. This is really the only movie since Beyond Rangoon that features Burma, so it's a must-see for anyone interested in the country.

This is definitely the best Rambo film since First Blood. However, it doesn't really have any character development or raw emotional value - just lots of shooting and violence. Of course, that's what a Rambo movie is based on. Nonetheless, the lack of a deep emotional connection to the movie (of the type in First Blood) means this film only gets three stars. After seeing it once, it doesn't really have much replay value.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!!!   June 26, 2009
    Steven C. Pancoast (Tennessee)
This is a great movie, every bit as good as First Blood. The action scenes are particularly realistic.

5 out of 5 stars Stallone still has it   June 25, 2009
James W. White (Rochester, New York USA)
Many were quick to dismiss this movie, but then it turns out to be one of Stallone's best. Nice to see bad guys who aren't cookie cutter out of the usal suspects.

5 out of 5 stars "Look At Those Arms & Heads Fly Off!!"   June 18, 2009
    BIG SYKO
I must admit that i have always had a love affair with gorey, gruesome movies & this one definitely delievers! Forget the story, forget the script. I watched this on blu-ray like 5 times just to see the ending over & over lol ! Stallone, a truck mounted .50, and hundreds of bad guys. Need I say more? GO RAMBO!!

5 out of 5 stars Awsome Adult Action Movie.   June 18, 2009
    Joseph D. Toth
This movie gets kind of a different review from me. I rank it as a excellent film, with some of Stallone's best work yet. The special effects were outstanding and lifelike. The modern graphics and special effects used in this film to show the war injuries actually happening looked very real, although you know they weren't because it is just a movie, ... and you have to keep that in mind as you watch this film.

I thought it was a great action movie. For the adults out there that like war movies with lots of shooting, ... this one you have to see. Its that good!

This is where my review turns just a little. I'm going to come right out and say it. This film is not for children to watch.

It's a great movie, ... but this one is for adults only.
