    Product Description
A TWENTY-NINE YEAR-OLD SLACKER WHO LIVES WITH HIS MOM REALIZES HIS SWEET SET-UP IS THREATENED WHEN SHE HEARS WEDDING BELLS WITH HER SELF-HELP GURU BEAU.

    Amazon.com
The great cast of Mama's Boy--Jon Heder, Diane Keaton, Jeff Daniels, the always-awesome Anna Faris--help lift this indie gem from its semi-predictable setup. Heder plays Jeffrey, a 29-year-old dweeb who still lives at home with his mom, Jan (Diane Keaton). Widowed at a young age, Keaton has clung to her only son, but not as much as he's clung to her since the death of his dad. The two have settled into a routine--game night, special menus--like, well, an old married couple. Until Jan is swept off her feet by motivational speaker Mert Rosenbloom (Jeff Daniels), who preaches the ground-breaking theory of "Positivity" ("...which goes back thousands of years--Jesus was really a big practitioner"). Then Jeffrey acts out--in a way more appropriate to a 3-year-old than a grown man. Jan and Mert have a touching, believable chemistry, and Jeffrey's tantrums are cringeworthy but hilarious. "You can't win back my affection with Manwich!" he shrieks at his appeasing mom. Does Jeffrey get his own chance to grow up and move on? Quicker than you can say "enter oddball Goth girl." Anna Faris plays Nora, an aspiring singer-songwriter with rather a limited repertoire; every song is about corporate America eating our souls ("I'm calling my first album 'Bed, Bath and Bulls--t'!"). Not surprisingly, she also has a heart of gold. As she works her quirky charm on Jeffrey, everyone in the film gets a chance to blossom. --A.T. Hurley

4 out of 5 stars An Unlikely Pleasure   June 6, 2009
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

This is an unlikely hilarious movie that you would never expect to be cute, but it's not half-bad.

Eccentric and nerdy Jeffrey Mannus (Jon Heder) is 29 years old and lives with his mother, Jan. He is perfectly fine with the arrangement, but Jefferey's world is turned around when Jan meets Mert Rosenbloom (Jeff Daniels), a motivational speaker, and they begin to date. What follows is a tug-of-war between Met and Jefferey, as Mert wants Jefferey out of the house, and Jefferey sees Met as nothing than dirt, and tries to bring Mert and his mom apart.

Meanwhile, he befriends a pretty and sweet girl at the local diner, Nora, who comes to have a soft spot for him. Back at home, the humorous war continues until the point that Mert and Jeffery get into a fist-fight. Jan breaks up with Mert in a flurry, and Jefferey is pleased: until he gets kicked out, too.

Living on the streets, Jefferey goes to find Nora, but she disowns him, calling him a jerk for never offering her any help when she was always so kind to him. Jefferey realizes all the mistakes he's made and goes to get Mert and Jan back together; after achieving this, he goes to find Nora, and they exchanged a kiss in the middle of the road.

This is an unlikely movie that really touched me. It is incredibly funny, and though it has its share of inappropriate stuff, you can look over that to enjoy this movie. Jon Herd gives a comical performance as the nerdy know-it-all mama's boy who had no point in life until Nora came along, and I found myself thoroughly enjoying this film. You should rent it first to see if you really like it, but this is a rare, goofy movie that you should see once of twice in your lifetime.

4 out of 5 stars Not great, but not bad either   April 13, 2009

This movie wasn't as bad as most movies of this type. I actually didn't feel that I had wasted my money when I purchased it used ($2.98 DVD) thru Amazon.com. The acting was good enough, and while the predictable storyline has been used numerous times before, it kept me interested until the end.

    5 out of 5 stars I agree with Brandon.   February 4, 2009

This was a great movie. All the principal actors had great chemistry with eachother. The dialogue was right on target--especially Jon Heder and Anna Farris's. Jon Heder has never been funnier. I found his character to be very original. I liked how he came across as being a spoiled, outcast of society, who said no to drugs. I also liked Anna Farris's character--especially when she tells Heder that she wants to be independent and is not going to let someone like Heder drag her down. All this coming from a new wave punker! This was an insightful and funny film about learning to grow up--even if you're a rebel who happens to be a mama's boy.

Thankfully before I opened the package on this DVD I saw a preview of this movie. I'm a fan of Jn Heder's Napoleon Dynamite and I friend of my at work recommended I see Mama's Boy. After seeing the preview of this movie, I returned it immediately. So I can't right a fair review but to me it looked like it would be a waste of money.
