Amazon.com As preposterous action movies go, Jumper is pleasantly unpretentious and breezily entertaining. A young man named David (Hayden Christensen) discovers he has the power to teleport (or "jump") anywhere he can visualize. After using this power to steal and make a comfortable life for himself, he pursues the girl he longed for in school (Rachel Bilson, The O. C.). But as he does so, another jumper (Jamie Bell, Billy Elliot) and a pack of fanatical jumper-hunters called paladins (led by a white-haired Samuel L. Jackson) crashes into David's freewheeling life. Jumper wastes no time trying to explain how jumping works or delving into the hows and whys of the paladins; this is an alluring fantasy of power directed at a pell-mell pace by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Go). There's a brief moment when it feels like the movie will bog down in romance and vague gestures towards character development--happily, that's the moment when Bell appears and the whole movie shifts into overdrive. You might wish that Bell and Christensen had swapped roles; Bell has a far more engaging personality, and Christensen's bland good looks might better suit a more aggressive character. Nonetheless, Jumper has oodles of dynamism and nifty visual effects to propel its comic-book storyline forward. A variety of recognizable actors in bit parts (such as Diane Lane and Kristen Stewart, Panic Room) suggest that the filmmakers are laying the groundwork for sequels. Based on a critically-acclaimed science-fiction novel by Steven Gould. --Bret Fetzer

A Fresh New Plot June 29, 2009 Every once in a while, people grow tired of the same old string of popular yet over-used super-heroes: Spider-Man, Hulk, Bat-Man. And when someone comes up with an idea for a super-hero movie not based on Stan Lee's stuff or anything else, it is extremely rare, yet they often turn out to be junk. "Jumper" is definitely not in the category of famous, celebrated super-heroes, yet you can't put it in the "junk" category. It's a fresh new idea, no over-used plots of characters, with the lesser-known Anikan Skywalker star Hayden Christensen, great CG effects, and a suitable villain. David Rice is a typical 15 year-old growing up in Michigan with a very strange gift he abruptly discovers one cold day: he has the ability to "jump" to any place he desires. He runs away from his alcoholic father and scorning peers to rob a bank with his new powers, and becomes a millionaire in seconds. Eight years later we are shown that David now lives a life of luxury and wealth in New York, having kept his ability a well-kept secret, but things are violently interrupted when "Paladin" Roland Cox, a man of a secret society who dedicate their lives to killing off Jumpers like David, confronts David at the apartment. David manages to escape with his life and flees his town, going back to Michigan and his home-town, to meet his old crush, Millie, and invites her to go with him to Rome- in a silent attempt to run away from any startling confrontation by Roland. She accepts, as she has feelings for him as well, and they leave, starting out on the feeling that things are fine as they grow closer. But when David is cornered alone while on a tour with Millie and other tourists and is attacked by other people like Roland. A fight ensues and David decides to escape to spare Millie's life, and though she grows suspicious of him, he does not reveal his abilities as he sends her back on a flight to Michigan. David then joins forces with the shady character Griffen, who seems to be an ally and is a Jumper like David, and together they must fight Roland and his society to save their lives and people like them- and the people they care for. This is certainly not the best movie ever, but it is a thrilling ride with surprisingly good roles from Samuel L. Jackson as the villain, who previously worked with Hayden Christensen on Star Wars; Rachel Bilson as David's lover; Jamie Bell as Griffen; and a very brief but clever appearance of Twilight's Kristen Stewart as Sophie, David's younger half-sister. It's a fresh new plot that most people will enjoy- go ahead and buy it, take a chance. And if you don't like it, you can curse people like me who egged you on to get it and watch your old Hulk movies.
Interesting DVD June 26, 2009 Patricia S. Putnam (Florida) Enjoyed the concept of the movie, will watch it over and over. excellent, looking forward to a sequel. hope they film one.
Heck, go ahead and jump in... June 25, 2009 Joseph P. Menta, Jr. (Philadelphia, PA USA) With the plot of "Jumper" recapped several times throughout this Amazon review section, let's just "jump" right into my thoughts on this little bugger. Blink and it's over movie, blink and it's over review... appropriate no? Anyway, away we go... This fast-paced (but not ridiculously fast-paced as the trailer seemed to indicate) X-Men style adventure is worth a look for its solid premise, edgy characters, and exciting confrontations. I especially liked the occasional nods in the direction of character complexity: Hayden Christensen's "Jumper" character maybe isn't the basically nice guy he initially seems to be and Sam Jackson's relentlessly hunting "Paladin" character maybe isn't really as bad as HE initially seems. In other words, maybe Jackson's character is right and all past jumpers HAVE become rotten eggs- dangerous rotten eggs- after a while, and need to be put down. Clearly much was left open for exploration in a sequel. Strangely, some of that exploration could have been done in this very movie, as it's only an hour and twenty-nine minutes long. Could it have killed 'em to give us ten more minutes of character material and background info to supplement the generous (and, admittedly, very well done) action sequences? At an hour and 40 or 45 minutes, this movie would still have been lean and mean, but also a little richer. Still, "Jumper" is worth a look for fans of super-powered characters and gritty adventure. The DVD features a full screen print on one side of the disc and a widescreen print on the other. A variety of engaging special features pepper both sides of the DVD. Review over. Quick, huh? Time for me to jump outta here...

i was very engrossed in this movie. i love hayden as an actor. the ability to teleport and come out winning at the end of the movie. great! recommended for a cool break from this bad reality. its begging for a sequel.
Watchable, but deeply flawed June 19, 2009 Steven I can see why this got crap reviews when it came out, it was mildly entertaining but was filled with SO many plot holes and unanswered questions. It's like they came up with this really cool concept for a story and couldn't be bothered filling in the gaps. The Jumpers "jump" all over the place and NO ONE seems to notice, even though they teleport in the middle of huge crowds. They are always teleporting OTHER random innocent bystanders to other parts of the world with ZERO consequences and we knew NOTHING about Samuel L. Jacksons character in this!......why was he hunting the Jumpers? what's his back story? so many annoying unanswered things! The rest of the cast were HUGELY under developed as well, especially Rachel Bilson, who had more to do in the O.C than she did in this. The only real highlight was that guy from Billy Elliott [forgot his name], and Hayden Christianson looked good in it............everything else was a fast paced, empty mess.
