Bigger isn't always better, but for anyone who enjoyed Pitch Black, a nominal sequel like The Chronicles of Riddick should prove adequately entertaining. Writer-director David Twohy returns with expansive sets, detailed costumes, an army of CGI effects artists, and the star he helped launch--Vin Diesel--bearing his franchise burden quite nicely as he reprises his title role. The Furian renegade Riddick has another bounty on his head, but when he escapes from his mercenary captors, he's plunged into an epic-scale war waged by the Necromongers. A fascist master race led by Lord Marshal (Colm Feore), they're determined to conquer all enemies in their quest for the Underverse, the appeal of which is largely unexplained (since Twohy is presumably reserving details for subsequent "chronicles"). With tissue-thin plotting, scant character development, and skimpy roles that waste the talents of Thandie Newton (as a Necromonger conspirator) and Judi Dench (as a wispy "Elemental" priestess), Twohy's back in the B-movie territory he started in (with The Arrival), brought to vivid life on a vast digital landscape with the conceptual allure of a lavish graphic novel. But does Riddick have leadership skills on his resumé? To get an answer to that question, sci-fi fans will welcome another sequel. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The Chronicles of Riddick (Theatrical Full Screen Edition)   February 22, 2010

Five years ago, escaped convict Richard B. Riddick escaped from a desert planet with his two companions, religious man Imam and runaway teenage girl Jack. After five years wandering across the outskirts of the galaxy and being hunted by bounty hunters calming the bounty on his head, Riddick arrives on the colonized planet New Mecca, he learns Imam placed the bounty on his head and Jack has been imprisoned on the prison planet "Crematoria" for murder. Riddick learns from Aereon, ambassador of the Elemental race is seeking out Furians, a race of warriors in a bid to balance the universe, as a warrior army known as The Necromongers led by the evil undead Lord Marshal are invading every planet in the galaxy and cleansing all of humanity in their goal for universal conquest. Beliving Riddick is a Furian warrior, Aereon decides to hire Riddick believing he is the one man who can stop The Lord Marshal and the Necromongers. When the Necromongers attacks New Mecca, Riddick is captured by cocky bounty hunter Toombs and his crew and he is transported to Crematoria, where he reunites with Jack now named 'Kyra', where Riddick and Kyra escapes to the planet's sun ravaged surface, where Riddick helped by Necromonger warrior Vakko and his sexy wife Dame Vakko, sets out to defeat the Lord Marshal and save the universe from the Lord Marshal's rule and save the rest of humanity from being converted into Nercomonger warriors. For any who enjoy a good sci-fi action movie, I highly recommend this one.

3 out of 5 stars cool new hero for today's youth market and cgi effects!   July 15, 2009

A relative told me it reminded him of "Dune" which I scoffed at because I love David Lynch's "Dune" because
    A) I'm a David Lynch fan and
    B) I did NOT read Frank Herbert's famous book which maybe would have spoiled the movie if I were to demand it be a faithful adaptation.

Anyway, what he meant was that Chronicles of Riddick had aesthetic similarities with Dune, which is to *some* extent partially true, but Riddick is a cgi movie and so doesn't look the same. I prefer sorta fake models to sort of fake digital ships. I don't quite get how people look at cgi and think it looks real. I suppose it is a very willful suspension of disbelief. Give it a few years and all these cgi movies will look fake and terrible and people will laugh at them.

The plot is messy, the dialog not too bright, the acting campy, but it is a fun ride. I admit it grew on me. Saw some on TV and it doesn't stink as much as I first thought. It looked as if a boardroom in Hollywood had come to the conclusion they need a more urban, "hip" hero for today's youth market or something. Like the scene with the pitbull alien beast. Riddick is *bad* yo! "Ahhh hell, ya done messed up now son, Riddick gonna get ya!" I'm getting old.
    2.5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Mess   June 14, 2009

I won't go into detail, but this sequel to the sleeper hit pitch black is a bit muddled because of so many characters, places, and subplots simply making it too much, but it does have it's moments(death by teacup). Hopefully the sequel will correct these issues because after that conan ending, I'm curious as to if they have anything special in store.

The last dvd in the Chronicles of Riddick really kix butt! I love the graphics and the story line is the kickin' chickin'. I love the, well, won't give it away. It is very well done, exciting and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It's a sci-fi with meaning and FEELING! It rocks!

4 out of 5 stars Vin Diesel makes the movie   May 30, 2009

The necromonger plot is not really my cup of tea. What is my cup of tea is Vin Diesel as Riddick quietly and calmy killing a prison guard with a tea cup. I own this movie and watch it for things like that. I love the character Riddick which I can't imagine anyone playing better. He's not cocky, he's just confident. I love how he kills the prison guard sitting on his chest. So quietly and quickly, then gives a little shrug to the mercenaries. Very cool.
